Why is Microsoft releasing only one Xbox 360 exclusive in 2013?

Next year is shaping up to be a pretty big year for console gamers. Grand Theft Auto V, Dead Space 3, Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider, just to name a few. And that’s only for the first-half of 2013!
PlayStation 3 has a handful of exciting exclusives, including The Last Of Us, Beyond and the Sly Cooper reboot (which is arriving a few years too late for my liking).
But for the 360, exclusive brands are nowhere to be seen, aside from the under-the-radar Gears of War: Judgement, which feels like a forced tide-over of a tired franchise until the next Xbox arrives.
So why has Microsoft done so little to evolve its exclusives lineup for Xbox 360 beyond 2012?

Sly Cooper Thieves in Time is not a reboot, it's Sly 4. The article writer should have researched that

otherZinc4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

I'll say it again:

Bungies title is EXCLUSIVE to 360!
Gears Judgement is also EXCLUSIVE!
There will be others!

SONY says games are releasing all the damn time & they never release!

Lets talk 2012 holiday exclusives for SONY:
Wonder Book: 80,000 rest of world...No US #'s yet.
LBP Karting: 210,000 worldwide
PS3 All Stars- Sales to date:170,000 world wide

That's Terrible!

Kinect Disneyland sold 193,175 in the week of Dec 1, 2012!

SONY games will have big numbers years from now when they count pack-ins and 9 - $19 games as "big sales".

Ilovetheps54146d ago

And where did you hear that Bungie's new IP is an exclusive? Because that is totally false. I know the first game that they make will be a TIMED exclusive, but I'm not sure about the two games after that.

Kinger89384146d ago

well your wrong about Destiny for a start, obvious hate here lol

helghast1024146d ago

Do you play Sales Figures or Videogames?

4146d ago
k-dillinger4146d ago

OK since you wanna play that card ucharted 3 outsold gears 3 gt5 outsold halo reach killzone outsells forza or fable god of war outsold left for dead that's just a few what other exclusives does Xbox have that's heavy sales hitters that Sony hasn't outsold face it exclusives sell better on ps3 but some do sell on Xbox their top 3 gears halo and forza all have been outsold by uncharted 3 gt5 and god of war facts

HarryMasonHerpderp4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

Why have you posted sales?
what does that have to do with the 360 not having many exclusives next year? Xbox fanboys reaction to not having many exclusives is to quote sales all the time.
Why would you not want more exclusives for your console of choice? I just don't understand that kind of mentality. If you enjoy gaming and it's a hobby then the more games the better!

Blastoise4146d ago

@HarryMasonHerpDerp

Well said.

Pillsbury14146d ago

You must love kinect Disneyland, so hardcore.

bakasora4145d ago (Edited 4145d ago )

its because they only need cod sales to get their numbers. why spend more on new exclusive when you can get even more with cod alone.

The only companies I see making exclusives in the future are in house developers. Other than that, companies are going to want to make all their games multiplatform. You target window shrinks when you just make it for 1 console. Unless you have a super franchise, it's pointless. Especially since a 4th console is coming out next year from Valve

Blackdeath_6634146d ago

i completely disagree. the release of said "4th console" or the steambox is exactly the reason why there should be more exclusives, think about it. now there is a 5th option to play games on including a pc if all the games were common across all platforms then you would only ever need one of the 5 options. i have a gaming pc and i play all multiplatform games on it i have no reason whatsoever to buy a console apart for exclusives.
-the wiiU has nintendo only games and games that can only be played using the game pad and/or wiiMote plus a solid set of exclusives.
-the ps3 has built over the last few years high quality exclusives, franchise and new IP's like uncharted, heavy rain etc...(you probably heard it all before)
-the steambox will makes use of steam services and will bring a new way of playing games in the living room.

...the xbox however has been reusing and abusing popular games like halo, forza and gears over and over and over again. while their third party relations are pretty good it doesn't differentiate them from other consoles.

dirthurts4146d ago

The developers don't care if consoles sell, they only care if their game sells.
Thus, the more consoles they put their game out on the more money they'll likely make, unless a big company (MS or Sony) is lining their pockets.
It makes more sense, generally, for consoles to be multiplatform.
The only people who want game exclusive are the console makers, and fanboys.

Consoldtobots4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

most of the kids here don't have access to linked-in. WHERE I just read a VERY revealing piece on the state of MSs core businesses. The windows battleship that has kept the MS empire afloat is starting to show chinks in the armor. Serious chinks at that. In fact the article is called "Microsofts nightmare scenario is actually coming true". We saw blips of this a couple years back when the investment market tried to push the company AWAY from the games console market because it is not helping the bottom-line. We all know how that turned out as Balmer basically gave them the middle finger and went full speed ahead against their wishes. Now the talk is about how ITS TIME FOR HIM TO GO. I know I will get debubbled for this but I think it's necessary to put things in perspective for all the xbox kids on N4G.

pompombrum4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

Xbox is going very strong though. I don't know how Windows 8 is doing but I imagine if that doesn't meet minimum expectations, Microsoft might find themselves in a poor situation. It's not like they've not had Windows problems before.. ME and Vista come to mind.

GalacticEmpire4146d ago

I wrote a blog about this (which I won't link directly) to some degree but I think it may have been dismissed by some as trolling, certain people have trouble accepting the truth.

It's not all sunshine, lollipops and rainbows at MS.

@aiBreeze Good point MS has have good fortune with Xbox 360. However...

"Microsoft had $21 billion in operating income last year. The Entertainment and Devices division, which is home to the Xbox had $364 million in operating income. So, as nice as Xbox is, it's not going to be enough to boost Microsoft if the rest of the business collapses."

http://finance.yahoo.com/ne...

Consoldtobots4146d ago

the article acknowledges that the xbox is a bright spot in the devices and entertainment division but that it is a very small pebble in MSs pond. Ultimately it's what we always said, xbox exists because windows supports it. Not the other way around.

There going the right route if next gen consoles are coming next year there are other titles on xbla like state of decay that's exclusive if you don't count Pc and who knows there could be some in the works now

BanBrother4146d ago

Based on the last 4 years, I think we can count on a Halo title next year (good for me, I'm a Halo fan).

I think it is mighty convenient to put the lack of exclusive support next year on the *assumption* that the 360's successor MIGHT come out next year.

Why are people suprised? I speak on behalf of rational thinking 360 owners; Microsoft don't care ENOUGH about having exclusives.

Putting all fanboyism aside, did anyone expect Microsoft to have any new IP's? Or at least a half decent exclusive line-up?

EVILDEAD3604146d ago

Microsoft went all-in with Halo 4 and started off the the new trilogy with it's most expensive game ever made, assembling what may end up being one of the best dev teams ever assembled.

The game is only a month old and like every Halo will sell great numbers throughout 2013.

No matter how many fan blogger sites pretend that there is only one exclusive coming in 2013, the simple fact is that is not true.

It's obvious that the Gears prequel is the biggest exclusive coming in the first half of the year.

But we also already know that Ascend: New Gods, Lococycle, Matter are all coming in 2013. Not to mention console exclusives like State of Decay (like Sardonic brought up) and Omerta: City of Gangsters etc.

The biggest story is the fact that you literally have the most ridiculous amount of Huge games releasing prior to E3 in June.

This article is about the 360, so if you only owned a 360 through June..your gaming schedule would look like this

Jan

Halo 4 (Spartan Ops season restarts 23rd)

DMC Devil May Cry

Feb

Dead Space 3
Omerta: City of Gangsters (Console Exclusive)
Aliens: Colonial Marines
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

March

Gears of War: Judgement
South Park: Stick of Truth
Tomb Raider
Crysis 3
Army of two: The Devil’s Cartel
Bioshock: Infinite
Star Trek
Metro: last Night

April

Dead Space 3

May

Grand Theft auto 5 (TBD May release earlier)
Remember me

June

E3 and the new console announements

Let's pretend that the 720 will not come next holiday.

You still are looking at Bungie's Destiny as the premeire game which may be a timed exclusive for the 360.

But you are also looking at the inevitable Battlefield 4 vs. Call of Duty: MW4 next holiday.

Plus the likes of games like:

Rainbox Six Patriots
Dragon Age 3
Homefront 2
Devil’s Third
Lost planet 3
Prey 2

And much more..

Only time will tell what route MS goes beyond E3, but either way you would have to be a fool to believe that it makes sense for them to go all-out again with another IP of the level of Halo, Gears or even Alan Wake strictly for this gen.

So Evil, when people ask the question "what games are unique to the Xbox 360 that would drive a person to want to buy an Xbox 360, or focus on playing it more, for the first half of 2013" your "100% keeping it real" response is...

Jan: A game that's already out but has a new mode coming.

A game a lot of people hate and is going to be terrible based on a demo released really close to the release date and is also a multiplatform game, which means it's not a reason to get or focus your gameplay on a 360.

Feb: Another multiplat game.

Another multiplatform game (sorry but, PC is a platform.)

Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

March: The exclusive people are saying is the only exclusive of the year (I'll give you that).

Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

April
Didn't you already say Dead Space 3? Well, anyway, that's Another multiplatform game.

May
Another multiplatform game.

Another multiplatform game.

June
Your own personal, unproven speculation that has nothing to do with anything being discussed and still more multiplatform games.

So your answer to "what unique game experiences will the Xbox 360 have for the first half of 2013" are a total of 2 true exclusive games (one of which is already out but for the sake of argument we'll give you the mode as an exclusive), 1 console exclusive game, and 14 multiplatform games?

That's keeping it 100% real? In an article that is talking about exclusives, your response is multiplatform games? What do you tell people who are looking for exclusives? "You don't need them, here's these multiplatform games you can't play online unless you pay an extra fee to access the online aspect of your games. Don't worry, it's fun to pay more money and even though the other consoles are also getting these games, it doesn't matter because the unique experience you're looking for is that you get to pay more money for online. Enjoy."

Yeah, keep it real dude. MS loves people like you.

EVILDEAD3604145d ago (Edited 4145d ago )

'So Evil, when people ask the question "what games are unique to the Xbox 360 that would drive a person to want to buy an Xbox 360, or focus on playing it more, for the first half of 2013" your "100% keeping it real" response is...'

NOPE..My response is take off the Sony engraved fan goggles and actually READ the REAL question posed at the top of the article.

The question is 'Why is Microsoft releasing ONE Xbox 360 exclusive in 2013?

So the 100% REAL answer is MS is not releasing ONLY ONE exclusive for the 360 in 2013.

Secondly it was already a FACT exclusives like Ascend: New Gods, Lococycle, Matter etc were already slated for 2013.

It was already rumored from the leaked Bungie contract that Bungie's Destiny would be exclusive this gen to the 360.

LMFAO @ you being so clearly B-hurt that you literally copied my list and wrote multiplatform next each of the games

When ALL you had to do was simply READ what I wrote above..here let me help

'This article is about the 360, so if you ONLY owned a 360 through June..your gaming schedule would look like this'

Even the article, acknowledges briefly that the first half of 2013 is packed wall to wall with what may be the biggest first half of AAAs this entire gen.

In Fankiddie world, the only games that anyone plays are exclusives. In the real world, gamers play ALL games, regardless of whether it's multiplat or not.

But, what MS and Sony have to navigate through is releasing your exclusives in a way that doesnt hurt your sales when competing against some of the bigger titles.

Microsoft learned this the hard way when they unfortunatly released Alan Wake against the HUGE Red Dead Redemption.

So here is the bottomline, it comes down to common sense. Microsoft released the biggest exclusive of 2012 and the most expensive game in Micrsoft's history in November.

The biggest game OVERALL... Black Ops 2 released only a week later.

Both titles will sell deep into 2013.

Micrsoft is releasing it's #2 selling franchise only 4 months later. Releasing these two majors this close for the first time this entire Gen.

Going into it's 8th year, MS simply chose to compete against the GOD of War prequel, with the Gears prequel coming a week later.

But, it make no sense for MS to release a game in May, like Last of Us, when the MONSTROUS Grand theft Auto 5 is coming the same month. (see Red Dead vs. Alan Wake again)

Again, with the most anticipated titles like Bioshock; Infinite, Metal Gear rising, Dead Space 3, and Tomb Raider. etc. the gaming universe will be fine until E3 that is.

Evil

DragonKnight4145d ago

"NOPE..My response is take off the Sony engraved fan goggles and actually READ the REAL question posed at the top of the article."

Oh I see, I didn't know that wanting unique game experiences on the 360 to, you know, distinguish itself in terms of reasons to purchase one for GAMES was only a Sony thing. I guess that makes it easy for Nintendo and Sony to say "yep, we got games you won't find anywhere else" and people like you can say "yep, we got games everyone else has." Ok.

"Secondly it was already a FACT exclusives like Ascend: New Gods, Lococycle, Matter etc were already slated for 2013."

Because an XBLA game is in the same anticipation category as a game like Halo right? Yeah, millions of people are just itching to get it. Ok there 360 fanboy, calm down there. I suppose if the lineup is so weak that it needs to be bolstered by XBLA games, then we can give you that. Of course, I suppose that we'd need to include Nintendo's online games and Sony's wouldn't we.

"It was already rumored from the leaked Bungie contract that Bungie's Destiny would be exclusive this gen to the 360."

Oh I see, so the 360 userbase puts stock into rumours and leaks and counts those as games now? Well thanks for clearing that up. I'm sure that gamers will love playing rumours and leaks on their console, as I'm sure that stock holders and other interested parties will invest in rumours and leaks. Awesome.

"LMFAO @ you being so clearly B-hurt that you literally copied my list and wrote multiplatform next each of the games. When ALL you had to do was simply READ what I wrote above..here let me help."

Your list was filled with 14 multiplatform games and 1 exclusive that hasn't come out already. If you want to point fingers, go to a mirror and point at it. Clearly you misunderstand the article, and clearly you don't understand that Gears is the only to be released total exclusive on your list of games for 2013. Gee, can't read your own stuff?

As for the rest of your MS PR garbage, I don't really care. Truth is, you couldn't correctly answer the article's question, nor the question I posed to you. Nice try though. I'm sure your MS bosses have taken note of your effort.

EVILDEAD3604145d ago (Edited 4145d ago )

LMFAO @ Dragon in troll desperation that you STILL won't read the title of the article.

But since your reeeeaching so far with this rant let's have some fun

'Oh I see, I didn't know that wanting unique game experiences on the 360 to, you know, distinguish itself in terms of reasons to purchase one for GAMES was only a Sony thing'

When millions of Gears fans can play Judgement in 2013 on the PS3 or the Wii-U then please stop pretending that there are no unique experiences on the 360.

'Because an XBLA game is in the same anticipation category as a game like Halo right?'

Was a PSN game called Journey in the same class as Assassin's Creed 3?

Is Walking Dead the GOTY?

Ooooh that's right the year is over and Dragon is back to the hypocritical trolling of the 360. So XBLA games don't count anymore..gotcha.

'Yeah, millions of people are just itching to get it.'

Never said that, but now that you mention it a small little title called 'Minecraft' just sold 4.5 million on XBLA. So surely millions can't be itching to get a game on XBLA..LOL

'I suppose if the lineup is so weak that it needs to be bolstered by XBLA games, then we can give you that'

Funny how some people thought the same thing about PSN's Journey vs. the rest of the PS3 2012 lineup. I mean it can't be possible that a small downloadable title on PSN could get the PS3 GOTY and not ONE other PS3 exclusive be nominated for title. I guess since your NOW saying this when in troll-mode on the 360 then surely you are one of those people who believe the same thing. Remember these are YOUR words not mine.

The truth is Journey deserved all the accolades it received AND it IS a PS3 exclusive. Just liek the titles I mentioned are Xbox 360 exclusives..period.

'Oh I see, so the 360 userbase puts stock into rumours and leaks and counts those as games now?'

LMFAO..It was a leaked contract that even BUNGIE confirmed that it was authentic. But, things can change which is why I say it 'MAY' be a timed exclusive and that it was 'RUMORED' from the documents.

'Your list was filled with 14 multiplatform games and 1 exclusive that hasn't come out already'

LMAO @ you still playing dumb AGAIN and won't admit why I wrote the list.

Once again, it is only leading into June and unless the first 6 months of the year equals the entire 2013, then like I said all along..Gears will NOT be the only exclusive release in 2013...And that is a FACT.

'Truth is, you couldn't correctly answer the article's question, nor the question I posed to you'

GTFOH..No the TRUTH is you still can't take off the fan goggles or helmet long enough to literally READ the title of the article posing the question ANYONE with eyes can see I answered thoroughly.

See the best part is REAL gamers outside of the internet will support and enjoy both consoles and the games no matter how bitter the fantrolls fight this fake console war.

massive facepalm

the article is not about the 360, it's about console exclusives.

ILive4146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

What truly blows my mind is how gamers defend this nonsense. If Sony (a company that is already in a financial situation) can afford to release new ips next year, considering we are to see new consoles next year, then I don't see why Ms can't do the same. Some may argue that it is a smart move. Perhaps financially, I don't know. For people that like to play video games, no. Ms would not be where they are witht the xbox if it werent for people who like to play videogames. Its unacceptable. To be honest, I really don't see the point of the new gears, really. I think it should have been a new IP that could have been transitioned into next Gen. But they know their fans will buy it, even though they just played it not so long ago.
The new gears is pointless and Ms is copping out and you find that acceptable? Come on!

People also talk about how some Sony exclusives don't sell well. When you consider all the variety in the market that Sony has to offer not everyone is going to like all stars, wonderbook, ibp kart like the uncharteds and God of Wars.

For example, there are lots of multi plats out there that many people aren't just not going to buy because they are only attractive some people. If Ms was actually like Sony and they provided a variety of exclusives this Gen, then they could be looking a the situation where the Gears and Halos sell but the viva pinatas don't.
Anyway, I think Sony is doing right by gamers. They are going to have a successful year because of it. For every gamer defending Ms with their reasoning, its just disappointing to see.

SkyGamer4146d ago

Having more exclusives is not necessarily a good thing. Yes for us gamers but with under 200k sold, do you think sony will release all stars 2? We are in a global economic crunch that brings the mightiest companies to their knees. You really think that just because spending a ton of money, RESOURCES, on new games when they don't sell well is a "good" business strategy? Especially when one is bleeding heavily into the red? The smart company would ride the storm and then start releasing when things pick back up. People just don't have the extra money to spend on new ip's. So most customers will buy games they like or they are familiar with and save the rest of the money for bills and rent and real world problems.

BanBrother4146d ago

@consoldtobots

Who is that directed at? Everything that has been said has been in context that you could have possibly replied to. After all, the 360 is definitely mentioned in this article and heading.

aviator1894146d ago (Edited 4146d ago )

Seeing as how they're releasing a Gears of War game early in the year rather then its usual spot during winter, there's a good chance that the 720 is coming out sometime very soon.

And we have yet to see what lionhead, ruffian, black tusk, etc. are working on among their other studios.

They could very well be deep in development with the 720 launch titles. I just hope RARE makes a kameo 2 or a reboot of perfect dark for next-gen.

BanBrother4146d ago

Keeping in mind Gears 3 was supposed to come out in April 2011, then got delayed to September.

But yes, it is more of a hint at a 720 release soon enough. I think Sony and Microsoft are having an old western show-down. They know they are both planning something big. Wonder who will strike first?

Majority of the time it's true but if a company/publisher is big (in terms of money), they can take a hit or 2. e.g. I am not worried about Rebirth sales as Square will make Remake 3 anyway but if FF 17 doesn't sell then Square might need to look for alternative. <-- my humble opinion
