Dark Souls 2: the inviting unknown

VG247: Dark Souls 2 is to be more "understandable", according to developer FROM Software. VG247's Dave Cook explains why the studio needs to be cautious in its approach.

When Dark Souls was released on PC, I thought, "wow, I'm really ashamed to be a gamer" looking at how my peers reacted.

And I've got that same sentiment echoing through my skull next to this rabid, paranoid explosion of unfounded nonsense following the brief trailer for the sequel.

Dark Souls' release on PC caused you to be ashamed of gamers? The legitimate qualms they had with the port made you ashamed?

Not the terrible complaining we make every time COD is about to be released, or the hyper-reactions to Rockstar's unveiling of GTA V, or the embarrassments that are the fringe addicts who pass away or hurt another person because they cannot give up video games?

There is "no rabid, paranoid explosion of unfounded nonsense" about Dark Souls II's announcement. There are some over-reactors; however, that's typical of any fan-base within gaming when a new product is announced.

What, you don't remember all of the people refusing to play the game because of GFWL, or because of the textures?

Whining about visual fidelity is about as far from a legitimate complaint as it gets.

^ Look, there were some overbearing individuals who drowned out the actual abundance of issues with the PC port. The frame-rate stuttered at times to close to unplayability, and the textures - so, so important in a game that relies on precise hit-detection - caused errors in gameplay.

Those are legitimate errors, and ones that people could have complained about if they picked up the game unawares.

I don't excuse anyone who knew about the issues beforehand, however. It's an easy fix to make, but not everyone is equipped or knowledgeable enough to fix a PC game. They should ship playable, and FROM Software even admitted the PC port wasn't as great as they had hoped it would be. Combine those issues with an extremely uncomfortable keyboard controller layout, and I can understand - even if I don't sympathize - with the group of upset people.

Besides, it is really commendable of Namco & From Software to have ported a game over to the PC simply based on fan uproar. Despite the port being so bad, they actually listened to the request of the community (unlike most companies) and this gives them invaluable experience and feedback towards the future.

Dark Souls 2 will also release on PC from release,
and despite having a ps3 myself, it is on PC that I will be playing it, just love the higher framerate and resolution of a well-modded version.
I use MotioninJoy to use my Dual Shock 3 without a problem.

The game isn't good though.

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.

All the bosses are only from Dark Souls. No Bloodborne, Sekiro, Elden Ring, or Demon Souls
