Wii U Upscale Explained: Wii Games do in Europe with HDMI, Doesn't Up-Render

There have been confusing reports this week on the Wii U video rendering Europe - does it upscale, the use of HDMI cables and all that pixels malarkey - leading to conflicting reports across the board.

The main issue spawned from the Wii mode in the PAL/European Wii U console, where options available to players on a standard Nintendo Wii aren't present in the Nintendo Wii U, such as 576i. Using components cables produces the maximum 480p image by default.

For European Wii gamers, the consensus is that certain titles, like The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and virtual console games, look better and run smoother in 576i instead of 480p.

''Important AV options are omitted from the Wii menu, with the PAL console unable to upscale to HD resolutions or run in progressive scan over component - an issue that doesn't seem to impact NTSC hardware.''

This quote was misinterpreted by some reports this week, stating that "Wii U doesn't upscale in Europe" - this is only partially true. It does certainly run in progressive scan at 480p.

I hope many people read this and stop saying so many silly stuff because seriously... It gets annoying just like with the GPGPU thing that everybody seem to believe that it is an actual chip. -__-

millzy1024153d ago

technically a gpgpu is a chip, they don't program to thin air. its just a normal Gpu with more cores to do the extra calculations. you could program gpgpu on a normal Gpu but graphics would suffer. ATI has recently done a presentation on this google it and find out.

"It does certainly run in progressive scan at 480p.".
Oh really? I would be shocked if it couldn't, 'cos the "p" at the end stands for progressive afaik.

This "does it upscsale?" crap has to stop, because the answer is simple.

You put a Wii game in a Wii U.
It runs the same resolution.
It runs at the same framerate.
It runs with the same amount of AA (usually none).
It might have a slightly better edge with colors using HDMI.

It's like any console with BC ever.

Your absolutely wrong just watch this ninty dude explaining it properly pfffff

lol, nice. It's been years since that's happened to me.

I've played Halo 2 on the 360. It is not friggin' uprendered.

mysterym4151d ago

@Silent, well you'd better get a new pair of nerd glasses as it is.

I played halo 2 originally on an xbox running at 480p, and later on the 360 for a whole year after the 360 came out (i have over 10k multiplayer games played on halo 2), so yes i can say your wrong.

Kennytaur4154d ago

If the Wii U could render Galaxy at 1080p, I'd buy it in a click.

Zhipp4154d ago

You're gonna have to wait for the HD Galaxy Collection.
Oh yeah, it'll happen.

guitarded774154d ago

Hell yeah, the Dolphin screen in 1080 with AA looks amazing. I already have a Wii U, but that 1080 rendering would be awesome.

neogeo4154d ago

Dolphin simply blows my mind. It somehow makes it look better then a ps3 game. Anyone that has not seen dolphin has to see it to believe it. It's too good to be true almost.

linkenski4154d ago

576i is running at 50Hz, so it runs slower than 480p

I think it's better to leave games like AC: Amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash forgotten on the Wii U. Best case, they are mediocre games; worse case, they are very bad. It was a dark time for the Wii U, and the first only exists to sell Amiibo cards, whereas the second was put together in a couple of months with a shoestring budget, and it shows.

The rest of the list does have some really cool games, though. I would love to see a remake of Star Fox Zero with decent controls, and Xenoblade X doesn't require that much modification to work.

How would XCX work without dual screens functionality?

Cacabunga3d ago

Same as Paper Mario color splash. One of the best wiiu games and getting even better with dual screen. Same reason why i prefer Splatoon 1

This article leaves out Nintendo's most controversial game to date devils Third.
I personally found the cover system really fun in that one compared to at the time most fps games completely lacking one.

Stevonidas3d ago

Devil's Third is HIGHLY underrated.

repsahj3d ago

They should remake Starfox to the switch 2. Very beautiful game during gamecube days.

Kirby is always ignored or forgotten by people, so good to see it mentioned here.
Play Kirby Canvas Curse on DS, and then play Rainbow Curse on Wii U, they're really fun and unique 'platformers' without any actual jumping.
