I'll probably buy a PS4 since I've never been let down by the Playstation brand. I really don't understand the people who say that they're going to buy all of the systems...do they really have that much time on their hands? Between PC and PS3, I've got a pretty large backlog of games as it is.

I don't like missing any games that I want to play. Nintendo has a bunch, Sony has the my favorites, Microsoft always has a few that I'm interested in and I don't game on PC. For example my 360 was basically only used to play... Mass Effect 1, Oblivion (when it released), Lost Oddessy, Tales Of Vesperia, Viva Pinata, Alan Wake, SC:Conviction, The Witcher 2, The Orange Box and a few others. I could care less about Gears. Halo and Forza. But, it IMO was well worth owing a 360 for. I can also see how some wouldn't or couldn't afford to. I just want to and can, so I do.

If Sony had dominated like they had the two previous generations it would have forced the hand for 3rd party developers and they would have used the PS3 as the lead platform. That didn't happen which is why some games would actually play worse or got left behind (Bethesda for example and the issues they are having with DLC).

This is why Sony is now forced to adapt and create hardware developers want. Sony no longer controls the market and cannot dictate their systems being the lead platform. Sony needs to do away with proprietary hardware that only really benefits Sony.

And before anyone chimes in suggesting the developers need to understand better that's not really the result we want. Microsoft proved with the original Xbox they can benefit from taking an extra year, not costing the consumer any extra money, all while not frustrating the game programmers and having a more powerful system that didn't suffer from poor ports (only very few games did like MGS).

We also don't need total dominance. What happened last time? If I remember correctly Playstation fans were handed a $600 console. It was the stiffer competition that forced the price down.

For some that is a strong incentive to buy MS console due to the frequent quality updates. So far, 3 major dashboard updates while the competition since inception finally only got their online store updated.

Which each service there is a level of expectation depending on what you paid for it. I for one like having choices and competition. Both free and premium service is ideal as it is.

Paying for XBL was here day 1 at the launch of the Xbxo 360 yet the Xbox 360 still managed to sell 70+ million. So considering the fist xbox sold 24 million and the 360 sold 54 million MORE WITH XBL a paid subscription day 1 I would say you are dead wrong.

Saturn and 64 combined had nothing on ps1. It was the better console to develop for, had infinitely more games, and made games mainstream without betraying the hardcore audience. CD's made it cheap, bigger games, and better sound. Saturn had cd's too, but the hardware was clunky to develop on. N64 doomed itself with cartridges, a wierd (yet innovative) controller, and low polygon count. Plus lack of 3rd party support (ps1 had all tekken games, final fantasy, jrpg's, all types of variety).

Ps1 was the greatest system of our modern times.

ms has shown me nothing to say next xbox will be any better because we have had the same exclusives of halo,gears and fable has been replaced by forza. Ms sees kinect and a casual market and forgot about us the core gamers. instead of paying for exclusive dlc how about invest that money into smaller development teams to work on xblive game. also when ps4 gets cross game chat and psn is still free than what would be the reason for MS to charge for xblive?

Yes I mostly agree with that but if sony next console is a disaster, you should care then because that could be a factor in sony not producing anymore consoles in the future. However I believe sony can have a more successful console next generation because of their past mistakes that have learned from and plus Sony has been VERY VERY successful in the past. I always base my purchase of consoles on the games. I always buy Nintendo consoles because I like Mario, Zelda, etc.. but for Xbox and PlayStation, I choose the one that have the games I want to play. I don't care if they only sell one console in their lifetime, as long as i am happy with it.

Last gen I loved the Xbox, that I exchanged my gamecube for it (when my first one broke), I didn't even touch the PS2 at all. Then everything changed when the PS3 was announced, and it had a lot of games I was interested in. I still wanted an Xbox 360, but a friend got one at launch, and when I played it, it confirmed that I preferred to wait for the PS3 instead, and I have been really happy with it since then.

With the new consoles, it will be the same. I'll check which one has more games I am interested in and it will be the one I'll buy. Then I will wait for a Mario or Zelda or Metroid, etc to be announced to buy the Wii U (with Pikmin 3 by then)

Can't really say if it will bring them back to dominance since we know literally nothing about it (nothing has been confirmed). However, seeing as they have a large variety of first party publishers really makes me want to buy it day 1. Also I hope they bring something like PS Plus down the line. I know it can't come day 1 seeing as they would have no games to give out but I can wait for it. Unless the PS4 will have backwards compatibility in which you can get free PS3 games on it. That would be awesome and would mean a definite PS4 day 1 buy for me.

I'm sure Plus will still be there for launch on PS4. I obviously doubt PS4 content day 1 (but who knows, Sony is pretty generous), but Plus will still be getting PS3 and PSN content for sure. PSN (or SEN if you prefer) is now well established, it's not going to be torn down and started anwe for PS4. It's going to be the same PSN, same IDs and all that. So I'm sure (unless Sony hardware designers are stupid), all Digital PS3 content will work on PS4.

Hopefully that's the case for both gamers and Sony. Because that's a major incentive for ALOT of current PS3 owners to move on to PS4 as soon as they can. If 100% of their current digital "stuff" works (physical too, but I'm talking about Plus here) AND you have the benefit of being able to play the "new stuff" as well, there's no reason [not] to get a PS4 and the hardware generation will start off with a bang and the install base will build more quickly.

I agree on not getting Day 1, but not for Failure Rate. Day 1 buyers generally have a great launch, but it's hard to keep the momentum up after the launch since there's literally no back catalog to play (besides last gen).

It truly depends on what's offered Day 1, and the difference between current-gen and next-gen games.

I don't quite get what you are saying, but if you mean Japanese brand loyalty towards Sony there is really not that much, and it is shrinking by the day...

They do love their Playstation though, but no where near like they love their Nintendo... and that's really all there is since most devs won't touch the regional corpse that is xbox.

Otherwise, they aren't completely turned off to non Japanese things. They love their Apple, a big deal as near smart level phones existed in Japan before the first Iphone was even made.

Unlikely the only reason the PS1/PS2 dominated was because of the third party exclusives such as FF, MGS, GTA, Tekken, DMC, RE etc.

Now that they are all multi-platform the PS brand has a high chance of being in 3rd place for a second time.

Actually Ck, the biggest sellers this generation, at least at retail, have been the old stand-bys. CoD, GTA, Gran Turismo, Halo, Metal Gear Solid, Elder Scrolls, Street Fighter, FF, Mario. Sure there have been a couple/few stand-out new IPs like AC and Mass Effect that had really stellar sales, but for the most part, the biggest sellers this gen were by IPs that have been with us for a while.

It's too early to tell but Sony's gameplan going into next gen should be much different then this gen.

The console being cheaper, more advertising, big time AAA exclusive games like Uncharted 4, Gran Turismo 6, God Of War 4 Killzone 4 at launch.

Then, the following year Sony releases Sucker Punch new Ip, The Last Of Us 2, Quantic dreams new ip, a new Little big planet title.

WOW Sony would kill the competition if they released those games in a years time, Here hoping.

Sony had some mistakes with the PS3 that gave them a slow start. I assume they learnt from what causes these issues and figured how to avoid them with the PS4.

They are going to hit hard with exclusives from the very beginning, this is what i think.

I'm always confused by this talk of a slow start. When the PS2 was released, in it's first year and a half on the market it managed 10 million. In the PS3's first six quarters it managed 12.6 million despite the high price point. The 360 moved 10.9 million in it's first 6 quarters on the market. There was no slow start for the PS3. That's a myth and I have no idea why people still propagate that myth today despite the facts being readily available. No offence intended.

What happened differently between the PS2 and the PS3 was just over a year and a half into the PS2's lifecycle in the US it received a price cut down below the magic $200 mark during a period of strong economic conditions and received a boost from hotly anticipated games that sky-rocketed sales. One and a half years into the PS3's lifecycle, it received a cheaper, 40GB version that still cost $400 and then the world was hit with the biggest economic downturn in a generation.

And yet even being far and away the most expensive console on the market and during hard times that still persist today, the PS3 still managed to hit 70 million consoles a year sooner then it's closest competition and closing a gap that was one almost 9 million consoles between the two. And it's the only console currently not suffering from huge sales declines.

I can't believe the price differences and the economic conditions that each faced doesn't even warrant a mention. While not the whole story, it's a huge piece of the puzzle when you look at the history of the Playstation brand, and one this article either wasn't aware of or completely glossed over in favor of "Put out a new Gran Turismo sooner and make Killzone the bestest next gen."

PS3 and 360 are still neck to neck, while the PS3 is not much more expensive and the 360 offers less (like no Bluray).

Maybe you should get down with the facts a little bit. The PS3 has sold more in less time then the 360 has, 70 million in 6 years while being more expensive.

So it's not hard to see why the PS3 has overtaken the xbox 360 in total units sold. And lets not forget the high defective rates of earlier models of the xbox 360 which caused a lot of people to rebuy it.

I believe they have a good chance at being numero uno again with the PS4, since they have a lot of great first party and second party developers right off the bat to create awesome games again next gen.

As long as they release a system with a size-able difference in terms of graphics with new and unique features not found in previous generations at reasonable prices, then it will be a winner regardless.

Implement how their online system is now but in a next gen way with PS Plus and Gaikai and I'd consider that a win as well.

I look forward to what Sony has in store for the PS4. Whatever they have planned, I am sure gamers alike will be excited.

It's up on the air. Microsoft came out on top on the US against a company that had the best-selling console of all time while only releasing a next-gen for a 30-million-units-selling brand (Xbox). Nintendo sold 100 million units after selling only 20 a gen before and that was unexpected also.

As for the OP, the Wii showed anything can happen, so yes the PS4 can do that but it obviously remains to be seen. We not only have to wait and see how the next MS and Sony consoles turn out, we have to wait and see what people want at the time and then see how all that equates to sales.

Sony has my business until they do something to lose it though, and nothing about their strategy from PS1 to PS2 to PS3 makes me think they'll lose it with PS4.

plus the online network was so immature back then. (the PSN has come a LONG way....)

There are many factors as to why the ps3 didn't "dominate". But they didn't give a good impression early on with that price point.

I don't think so. Sony's dominance is over. The market is split now with MS and Nintendo doing so well in the U.S. and other regions. Not to mention, sony isn't in the best financial position right now but they will do fine. MS has sold close to 73 million and some of those are sure to pick up the next gen xbox also. As for me, I will be getting both ps4 and the next xbox. It will be the xbox first though because they are sure to be the first one's out the gate.No doubt about that.

Plus look at the fact that MS had a full year head start and the console had a full worldwide launch at the time, Hence why it was rushed and had the redlight issue for over a year. If you want a good example of "domination", look at what the PS2 did to the gamecube and xbox, those consoles stopped selling completely at 20 million and 30 million, whereas the 360 and PS3 is still selling very well.

They haven't needed console dominance to bring the best and most diverse library of exclusive games (what sets consoles apart) this gen.

I want them to be healthy profit makers again, to be able to carry on with what they are doing. I'm convinced that an elegant PSN solution is under way for PS4 that offers stuff like streamlined integration with devices through SEN, background task performance supported by increased RAM capacity, cross-game chat, party chat, cross-platform play, Gaikai streaming and other great features whilst PS+ continues to grow across the board. I mean I wonder what else they could add too.

If the rumors are true and MS incorporate a blu-ray player into the Xbox 720, then I may skip the PS4. My PS3 is primarily a Blu-ray player. There just hasn't been enough exclusive franchises that I liked this gen to warrant me buying the PS4. I enjoyed Uncharted and God of War 3 but other then that, I can't say any other exclusive on the PS3.

This could all change when I see what Sony offers next gen. MS is looking to dominate the family room so it's going to be all about the games. I just want to see if there are more games that suit my personal taste on the PS4.

Currently I am in the Dust514 beta and I think it's awesome that it's free....but there is something missing in the formula that is just not making Dust514 a solid FPS contender. Killzone is much better as a shooter but Dust514 has some really deep RPG elements.

Point is, the reason I still mainly use my PS3 is simply for blu-ray.

If the 720 comes with blu-ray then I really wouldn't need a PS3 or PS4 because the 720 will have all my blu-ray needs.

It will come down to games on the PS4. The main IP's on the PS3 aside of Uncharted and God of War (possibly The Last of Us) have IMO been sub par. I felt GT5 was a total failure. I felt all of the exclusive FPS were sub par. Bought LBP and got bored fast.

I just felt 3rd party titles were just too awesome this gen and were mostly better then Sony's exclusives this gen. I switched to Forza as my go to racing title from a once long time GT fan. Halo is my sci-fi FPS of choice, Battlefield is my military shooter of choice, Gears is my TPS franchise of choice, Bethesda is my open world fantasy developer of choice, R* with Red Dead Redemption and GTA titles are my more realistic open world choices etc.

Aside of the Uncharted franchise and God of War (although I did prefer dante's inferno more) there just wasn't anything on the PS3 this gen that suited my gaming choices.

I think that Sony have done a tremendous job this gen regaining players but unfortunately despite being beter-value-for-money(PS Plus)than Microsoft and offerring an amazing experiance all-round there seems to be this amazing anti-Sony journalisim in the US in paticular. They Dominated 1994 when introduced the playstation brand They again dominated the gaming industry when launching playstation 2.
When they brought out the psp they brought back in the handheld market sony had a tuff time with ps3 first year so but once they gained support they started buying studios they again DOMINATED.

Way to many rabid fans on here! Why does the PS4 have to dominate in order to be a great console or provide great games? The PS3 and many other consoles before it prove that even in an install base of 20-30 million, there will most likely be some great games to be had. The PS3 is at 70mil and that's proof that there is viable marketshare for each major player. What I don't fully understand is how so many people assume from rumors the that PS4 will be some monster of a console. What articles are you guys looking at? Because everything that's been leaked so far has it in line to being a pretty straight forward and easy to program for system and not some bleeding edge in tech... If 1080p 3D 60fps is their goal, then that's good enough for the masses of people that may not even have 1080p TV's yet. I wish people would stop playing the numbers game and just play what games they like. The loyalty and insanity that some people have for one specific company makes me think that soon when we boot up our consoles, we'll have to input whether we are Democrat or Republican just to play.

Sony PS3 is already the dominat console. The PS3 has sold 70m in 6yrs at a higher cost than the other consoles out this gen. Each of Sony's consoles have sold over a 100m the PS3 will do the same. Name any other console that has done this.

Sony Computer Entertainment, despite whatever financial situation it may is right now with the PS3 and PS Vita, is already leading the console gaming industry in terms of high quality offerings and exclusive games. Anyone looking for evidence that it is so can look no further with Sony's track record of exclusives and new IP's, and let's not even get to the upcoming The Last of Us that will showcase a level of mature themes far beyond the comprehension ability of your typical 360 gamer.

Like I said a few times before, the issue here is not really Sony's performance sale wise. Rather, it's the "dumbing-down" of the video game industry that led to the popularity of mediocre games. Sony may or may not, in a pure sales perspective, be able to regain the console domination it once had with the PS1 and PS2 eras. Reason being is simple: You can only do so much to prevent the retardation of the videogame industry, with the so-called 360 "gamers" proudly leading the charge with their Kinect Dance games.

Sure, Sony may never regain the dominance it may once had. At the very least, Sony is keeping the true, traditional hard core gaming alive while continually innovating fresh ideas. People need to wake up and open their eyes that Microsoft has no sincere desire to support traditional hard core gaming. Microsoft is a company that ONLY cares about money by continually raising the annual price of Xbox Live, and in its desire to compete with Nintendo, the next Xbox console will almost feature only "games for kiddies and casuals". Of course, the so-called 360 "hard core gamers" will spin otherwise, but the classy, mature, and intelligent Sony gamers know the truth all to well. Th ps3 was a failure for me. My favorite franchise in socom was garbage. Twisted metal was terrible. Gt5 was the worse in the franchise. God of war 3 is the only game that killed it for me. The uncharted and resistance trilogy was also pretty good.

As a die hard sony fan IMO heres what they need to do:
1. MUCH lower launch price ($400 max)
2. Launch very close to when microsoft does (or before)
3. Make it much easier to develop for (so that bethesda and other clueless devs know how to make games for it)
4. SHOOTER FRIENDLY controller alternative, (i love the dualshock but MANY people love the 360 just for its controller)
5. new operating system, xmb has had its run (time for a change)
6. KEEP BASIC ONLINE FREE AND KEEP MAKING PS PLUS MORE ATTRACTIVE
7.1st party Exclusives (GT6, GOW4, UC4, KZ4) need have at least one or two at launch)
8. games/updates should download and install in the background
9. Make MGS5 and Demon's Souls 2 EXCLUSIVE to PS4
(if microsoft can get epic to have GeOW exclusive then you can as well with Metal gear)
10. new advertising campaign (this time show off the games and not an actor)

...and they will do well. Sadly, though in the long run it did push blu ray, with the cheapest PS3 being $499 (US of course) it was way too much for a lot of people. The PS2 had one SKU and it launched at $299. It seems like $299 is the sweet spot so, like this gen, they will prob do 2 skus. They should do like MS this gen and do a $299 and $399.

I will say that both MS needs to not do proprietary HDDs next gen like this, that screwed them. Considering you can get a USB 3 external HDD at near 3 TB for around $100, there should be nothing like this gen where the $100 diff from the 360 and 360 pro was nothing more really than a 20 gig HDD. Also, MS should allow any size external device. I applauded them for allowing thumb drives but you cant use one larger than 16 gig.

Back to Sony, keep a SKU at $299 and you will do WELL.

ever since the ps1 was introduced i was hooked to that system, then came the ps2 i bought that and loved it! especially with all the great games it had. then came the ps3 and seeing how the ps1 and ps2 didnt disappoint me i picked the ps3 over the 360, you know the old saying if it aint broke why fix it? well thats the way i look at the playstation and i look forward to getting the ps4,

Sony does not have to be number 1 in the USA. It's Sony, so they should be number one, worldwide, no. In Japan sure, but not here. Japan has been number 1 in the USA for a long time. It's good to see USA number one in the USA in videogames.

To dominate will be very difficult because you would need to sell significantly more than competitors. An example of dominance would be like 5 million to 1 million. Figures of about 5 million to 8 million is not dominance. With this, I doubt they will be able to "dominate".

Sony already have the majority of Japan and Europe backing them all they need is North America and then they will dominate. Possibly with a better online offering and multiplate quality im sure they can begin to grow tremendously in North america. PS4 is my #1 pick next gen.

As long as enough units are sold to ensure the awesome exclusives sell, I'm happy.
I just want the Motorstorms to keep coming, along with the God Of Wars, Ratchets, anything by ND, Killzone's, Wipeouts, GT's, LBP's, inFamous's, etc,etc.
I really want Sony to re-green light The Getaway 3 as this was a massive selling series for them, also get 8 Days happening as a PS4 title for me, as well as a new PS4 Medievil, Syphon Filter, Jet Moto, Abe's Oddysee, & buy Insomniac after FUSE fails to sell, so we can get some unlimited Resistance & Ratchet action on PS4.

I don't understand why Sony haven't released any of there PS1 big hitters on PS2 or PS3 or both, like the Jet Motos, Destruction Derby's, Syphon Filter, Medievils & the huge list goes on, not to mention awesome PS2 games that have been ignored since, like, Primal, The Mark Of Kri, Jak & Daxter, etc,etc.
I love Sony exclusives due to the diversity, quality, characters & overall production values, so I really want all the great games I loved getting modern sequels, I mean, Syphon Filter & Medievil for example are absolute classics & set the bar for there genres back in the day. Now, like near every older game, they just don't hold up any more, so it would be nice to be able to not have to play the nostalgia route, as when you see most PS1 games nowadays, nostalgia is ruined by how bad these games look now, due to how good modern games look, so, seeing the games were the beezkneez for there time, they should be honered with new, awesome versions for the latest hardware. There legacy should not lie with there 1st releases, on machines that were also 1st in the polygon era of machines.

I would buy PS4 tommorow if it were released, & I can't wait until it is.

If this console isn't multiplat friendly then you can drive that final nail in Sony coffin. Whatever it is this company desperately need some good news because they're getting thier ass kicked out they're in the electronics industry. The reason Sony dropped back this gen is because they went into this gen with the same arrogant attitude of assumed dominance like this article has.

Don't get me wrong, the only console I've owned this gen is the PS3 and I never regretted that decision; but Sony should never assume they will dominate, there is no reason that they would.

They took the piss with the price point, went a bit too far with the tech in the console and clearly just assumed people would buy it. They released late, they openly admit to making consoles a nightmare to develop for... it's honestly more amazing that they're still in the race!

Sony make good consoles, the PS1, PS2 and PS3 have all been amazing - but they should never be complacent about their sales and I think this gen has showed them that.

I buy them all i love my ps3 and xbox360 and my wii u, but with valve, apple, samsung all playing it very cool at the moment it will be interesting to see what the outcome will be, but hey isn`t it great for our industry.

I will probably get a PS4 as long as Sony doesn't ditch the dualshock(triggers need to be better) and they continue to provide great exclusives. Multiplats will be about the same on the 720 and the PS4 so I do not have to worry about getting the vastly inferior version of them (like the Wii last Gen and probably the Wii U as well)

-google has billions of dollars (for advertising and investing in hardcore games)
-google chrome on ps4
-google and micro$oft are bitter enemies

One thing I know is I'll for sure updgrade my PC as needed and I'll buy a PS4 since I am most satisfied with these 2. Xbox 720 I want, but rumors and MSFT actions seem that knect will be a big part, so I need to learn more on what MSFT plans are before I decide. Bought a Wii right away but not enticed yet for the Wii U either. In time, maybe when a Zelda and Metroid are announced.
