Explicit content: why can't games get away with it?

When it comes to the violent, the titillating and the graphic, developers and publishers of so-called "triple-A" games often insist that they're subject to a cultural double standard. Other entertainment industries, they claim, and in particular Hollywood, get away with degrees of explictness that would make Kratos cringe. The merest whiff of a glimpse of an intimation of such content in videogames is enough, meanwhile, to snow PR departments under for months.

Because the rating system is poorly enforced if at all? You get parents who GTA and the like for their either year old then complain about how easily they got it.

You stole the words from my head. This is exactly why games have a limit; maybe if some parents weren't so retarded, they would actually consider the implications of a game with 18+/M slapped on the box which would cause them to deny their child the game

I go on COD and find a herd of potty-mouthed 12-year old boys and wonder where their parents are. Things like this (and the Father who murdered his baby) make me wonder why there isn't some type of course to do before you can legally give birth!

Children playing violent games is a tough one for me. On one had I can see why they shouldn't play them. On the other hand, I have played violent games all my life. Doom, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, GTA1 and many others were all played by me before I hit my teenage years. I bet most people on this site have played violent games before the recommended age.

I turned out fine. Most kids my age had played the same games. Its weird how I don't like kids playing mature games, but I have done so my whole life.

I ask why have a rating system if no one enforces it? You have a whole 4-5 places that actually check ID and even then all they do is glance at it and say "ok" without actually verifying age.

Interesting read. Thanks for posting! I think it's primarily due to the fact that anyone who isn't a gamer or involved in the industry don't take us very seriously. It's still seen as a hobby for kids- immature, childish. Just try to talk about it with your parents or anyone over 35. Its also interesting that you can watch someone get sawed in half, decapitated, etc but "god forbid" there's nudity or adult themes regarding sexuality. That really just seems to be an issue here in the states though. 'Merica!

I like the argument a lot of non gamer adults use; "It's for kids, and adults who live at home at 30+" however the irony is these are the same ones who play games on their android phone/tablets.

I think it's got more to do with that fact that it's interactive. YOU control the character who's doing all these nasty things, and it's perhaps more shocking for that reason. It's a more vicarious experience, and there's an illusion that it's you the gamer who's doing these things, or at least making these things happen.

I agree

We're in the HD era where characters can look real, games are no longer only for kids.

it's time to get the christians and feminists off of our balls.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC4h ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer5h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya3h ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde3h ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me
