Head 2 Head: Does Call of Duty deserve the hate?

CVG: Seconds out, round four. This week me and Tamoor have a good old row about Call of Duty.

Tamoor thinks the blockbuster series is on the receiving end of disproportionate criticisms, whereas I come in to save the day and explain why most criticisms are valid.

But then again, I could be completely wrong. It's up to YOU to decide in our latest episode of Head 2 Head.

Sorry to break this to you British guy but Call of Duty isn't a sport when can you go down to a park or stadium and watch 12 people run around like idiots shooting each other in the face with real guns. Does COD deserve the hate no but it also doesn't deserve its sales ether when other devs create great games with new innovations and never get noticed but COD rehashes the same elements every year and breaks sales records.

dredgewalker4149d ago (Edited 4149d ago )

Not to mention the god awful ports to the PS3, which is really questionable since Modern Warfare ran quite well with it. I don't really hate COD, I just hate what kind of business practice Activision does with the series.

Well, maybe not where YOU live....

I agree, I don't hate the series but it's really unfair that it gets those sales when other, better games struggle to sell more than a million or two and we never get a sequel because of that, i wish this multiplayer shooters fad will finally die, Black Ops 2 low-compared-to-MW3 sales prove it's declining so that is a good sign.

nukeitall4148d ago

I think it is unfair that CoD doesn't get recognized more as a great series that matches it's sales. More people likely like CoD that most new exclusive or creative ip on one platform, let alone combined.

Why can't people let others that like something like it, without pissing all over it. It is a great game to many, so get over it!

No, Call of Duty itself doesn't deserve it. Activision does.

mcstorm4148d ago

I agree. I think this is what alot of people done realise that people not hate cod they hate the way AV do the business with the games.

If a game is not a big hit like blur ect its dropped or if its a hit they release a new one every year and milk it until sales drop like guitar hero.

nukeitall4148d ago

So you hate the fact that ATVI doesn't support money loosing IPs, but only support the successful ones?

What is ATVI? A public service supported by tax dollars?

As far as I can tell, ATVI makes sensible business moves unlike EA whom try to force online pass or Origin down your throat.

ATVI gives consumers what they want, by evident that they keep buying annual releases of CoD, while EA does not trying to force Online Passes on you, but somehow along the way ATVI is the bad guy?

mcstorm4148d ago

No i did not mean they dont support under performing ips what i mean is they dont give them a chance. To me if AV games do not see more than 2 million you dont see a 2nd one.

I have not got a code game since mw2 not because i think its a bad game i just want a change and ive just picked up bo2 for the wiiu and im shocked at how good the game looks. I dont think its a halo 4 beater but it looks good and is fun to pay.

Fil1014149d ago

I myself traded mine in just yesterday for farcry 3 and dont regret it one bit. it's not that I hate cod i'm just bored with the same s**t every year, I brought black ops 2 on release and hit 3rd prestige and couldn't be bothered anymore, maybe next gen i'll try it agn. After playin farcry 3 for just one day I cant help but feel i've missed out on soooooo many great games but that's what cod does I used to be a gamer and I want that back.

Enate4149d ago (Edited 4149d ago )

I don't know I didn't really come to like it till MW2 and I play on PS3. Playing with a friend of mine I was able to get really good. An continued that fun with Black Ops 1 and MW3, hated WAW though. Black Ops 2 came along an I am just not feeling it. I hate the way they messed with the kill streaks an the lag compensation at least on PS3 is unbearable. It doesn't matter how good I am instant death is something I can't overcome. Which all comes down to thus far this being the most frustrating cod launch for us ever and also least played.

It really is disappointing for me because it was the only FPS multiplayer I liked since golden eye.

listenkids4149d ago

No game deserves hate, the internet is a troll band wagon, kids will jump on and hate on anything because it's cool, right? Yep.

iistuii4148d ago

People on here really don't get it. Saying things like it doesn't deserve the sales & its a shame other games don't get the sales. If other games were more up to the mark then people would buy them. People aren't marched to the shops at gunpoint to buy this game, believe it or not away from N4G cuckoo-land people actually really enjoy it. So instead of coming on here bleating, go & play something else.

Xbox $70 billion bet paid out

fr0sty247d ago

Guess that's what happens when there's no good new games to play...

4Sh0w247d ago (Edited 247d ago )

Well regardless of exclusives, or whatever else there is to play on Xbox or ps, CoD has has still been the top selling game on ps platform since forever also.....so no surprise that the most popular game franchise on any console could easily have a revival due to servers coming back online...this is just credit to xbox backwards compatibility & thats good thing for Xbox gamers.

wiz7191247d ago

@Frosty orrrr maybe it’s a breath of fresh air to be able to go back to the peak of the series .. and it’s beem great lol

mkis007247d ago

It's going to take 10 years for xbox to generate that much profit...

Rhythmattic246d ago

Why worry when they have OS, Server and Background Data in their hands...
Gaming is just the small piece, at the top left in a few K piece jigsaw.

EasilyTheBest246d ago

If you buy a house with cash for 1 million dollars you still own the house. Microsoft don't need to make the money back.

Rhythmattic244d ago

But its not money back, its about how it goes missing.

jznrpg247d ago

Shooters is what Xbox people play most of the time and that’s about it by the numbers and sales of games.

shinoff2183247d ago

Atkeast older gamers nostalgia is good. Jeez.

Jin_Sakai247d ago

Mostly because the new CoD games are garbage. The old games were much better.

Rutaprkl246d ago

Agree 100%. Cod 4, WaW, Black ops 1 & 2, those were the days.

Rhythmattic246d ago

For MP, Unreal tournament , QIII Arena (loved the UT mod) FTW!

RaidenBlack246d ago

Unreal Tournament and Quake III were simply amazing ... CoD's and CoD-likes' rise killed the arena shooter popularity ...
Unreal Tournament 2004 is my favorite in the series.
Didn't enjoy Unreal Tournament III, Quake Champions that much.
Too bad Epic cancelled Unreal Tournament 2014 becoz of Fortnite

Rhythmattic246d ago (Edited 246d ago )

I got hooked on the QIII Urban Terror mod (and my work colleagues I introduced them to)... LAN Sessions at the closing of the doors at work, into the night , sinking beers and eating pizza..... Good times.

thesoftware730247d ago

Wow, good games never get old I guess.

CoD will always be a beast of a franchise, and how awesome is it that you can just boot it up or pop it into your Xbox and play, MS BC is really a neat feature.

CrimsonWing69247d ago

Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.

1Victor246d ago

@crimson:” Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.”
I agree it’s worthy at the start of the generation when there’s few new generation games but halfway through the generation it’s not a feature.
Now it’s good that this game is finding a renewed life for its fan but it shows a mayor flaw in new games release when a close decade old game is toppling the charts

CrimsonWing69246d ago

I don't know if I understand what you mean. It's a feature regardless of the time into the generation.

Let's take Armored Core 6 for example. Let's say I'm interested in checking out the previous Armored Core games, sure would be nice if I could play them on my current-gen console.

We're about 3 years into current-gen and old games are hitting in the top 5 for sales charts in the month.

I do get where you're coming from with older games possibly being better than the newer games, but the feature stays the feature. I can only speak for myself, but when there's a lull in game releases or nothing great is out, I like to go back to old titles. It's just nice to not have to have a bunch of consoles out to do so.

I think moving forward it'll be less and less of an issue as like with the PS5 you can access most all of the PS4 games, but I like going back to PS1 and PS2. Would be awesome to kind of make backwards compatibility a prioritized feature moving forward. Hell, Sony was the first to implement it.
