Xbox 360 dominates start of gaming's key holiday sales season

Despite the debut of the Wii U, Microsoft's Xbox 360 was the best-selling system in the US for the 16th consecutive month in November, selling more than twice as much as any competing system. The Xbox 360 was also responsible for over half of all money spent on new retail game software for the month, according to a new report from market tracker NPD.

They really need to start specifying Regions in these kind of headlines, it's misleading and borderline flame bait, especially with the language used i.e. "dominates". Like a 13 year old kid wrote it.

EVILDEAD3604156d ago

It's hilarious how the headlines were how MS lost E3, in June. But come November the headlines that actually matter are the ones like this one prove what really mattered at E3.

MS never needed a new system last holiday and they clearly didn't need one in it's 7th year. People thought bthe MS had to do a price drop because of the dry summer, but like I kept saying all they needed was the inevitable yearaly Kinect price drop and let the bundles do the rest of the magic.

What is interesting is the Wii-U sold out of it's inventory, but will MS and Sony feel that the console is a threat of any kind until the following holiday?

December NPD will probably look exacly like November.

The big games early on will be the two prequels..Gears for the 360 and God of War for the PS3.

This will lead into the multiplats Bioshock: Infinite and the monster GTA V which will dominate till the next E3..

E3 will unveil what we all know will be the new consoles.

If 720 launches and MS finally drops the price on the 360, then we could potentially still see good nubers for the 360 and it's next gen replacement, similiar to the old PS2/PS3 launch days.

interesting times..

"It's hilarious how the headlines were how MS lost E3, in June. But come November the headlines that actually matter are the ones like this one prove what really mattered at E3."

That might have something to do with the gaming media primarily aiming their analysis towards gamers, not stockholders.

It's nice that you think Microsoft's sales success is what "actually matters", but most of us are probably more interested in what E3 showings mean for us when we sit down in front of our consoles, not what it means for Microsoft's quarterly results.

DragonKnight4156d ago

"It's hilarious how the headlines were how MS lost E3, in June. But come November the headlines that actually matter are the ones like this one prove what really mattered at E3."

Oh I see, so when MS is doing badly the headlines don't matter. When they do something right (for a change) that's when the headlines matter. Nope, you're not an MS fanboy/freelance PR rep at all.

"MS never needed a new system last holiday and they clearly didn't need one in it's 7th year. People thought bthe MS had to do a price drop because of the dry summer, but like I kept saying all they needed was the inevitable yearaly Kinect price drop and let the bundles do the rest of the magic."

Oh wow, straight off a pamphlet I tell you. I'm sure you're eagerly awaiting the gold stars you'll receive in the mail soon enough.

"December NPD will probably look exacly like November."

And what about global numbers?

"The big games early on will be the two prequels..Gears for the 360 and God of War for the PS3."

You also sound like vgchartz, in that you undertrack PS3, but in this instance in the big games that everyone else has already schooled you on.

"This will lead into the multiplats Bioshock: Infinite and the monster GTA V which will dominate till the next E3..

E3 will unveil what we all know will be the new consoles."

Why didn't you win that 500 million dollar powerball jackpot?

I mean seriously, just listen to yourself. Read the crap you write. You literally sound like you work for Microsoft. You do know they don't give a damn about how much you praise them or their product right? You're nothing but a number, a statistic, to them. Just apply for a PR position there and at least bring a legitimate reason to your constant fanboy praise of MS and the 360 so that people can begin to come to SOME understanding how you can be happy about MS riding the coattails of 3rd party developers and shunning the core gamer on a daily basis.

EVILDEAD3604156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

LMAO @ the fankiddies with spam accounts getting all riled up for absolutely nothing.

First off NO ONE is bashing the 360, PS3, or the Wii-U..so put the pitchforks down.

'It's nice that you think Microsoft's sales success is what "actually matters", but most of us are probably more interested in what E3 showings mean for us when we sit down in front of our consoles, not what it means for Microsoft's quarterly results.'

First off the article IS about NPD sales and I know that ANY MS success eats you live, but what I'm talking about has nothing to do with quarterly results.

Once again, like I've always said, the winner of E3 isn't proven in June, it's proven when the games are released and what follows.

MS got bashed after E3 for leading off with Halo 4 and ending with Black Ops 2. While simply showing it had a strong lineup..

FAST FORWARD and guess what ACTUALLY mattered to ACTUAL gamers in November..millions and millions of gamers chose both Black Ops and Halo 4 to play when they sat down in front of their consoles AND both games were credited as the big reasons for the success the 360 had in November.

Moving on..@ Minato, Up2013, and the spammer account..

I'm simply talking FACTS when I say the 'BIG' games coming from both Sony and MS are the prequels. This isn't a list of ALL titles coming for either consoles.

But let's keep it 100% when we talk about the big anticipated titles early on

Jan is Devil May Cry

Feb is Dead Space 3, Metal Gear Rising, and Bioshock: Infinite

March is Tomb Raider and the 'BIG' prequel releases of God of War: Ascension & Gears of War: Judgement

April is Dead Island: Riptide

May is the MONSTER...GTA V

June again is E3 2013..which the new consoles and holiday lineup will be announced..

We are talking games that wont be released for almost a YEAR from now.

Other than the VGAs tonight and E3, we can all simply speculate on what will happen in the future

Which is why I say as gamers we are living in interesting times.

MS did lose E3, so that's what the headlines at the time should have said. The fact that 360 sells well in the US has nothing to do with E3. People who don't have a current console usually buy what their friends have, if they don't have their own preference for particular exclusives. Add to that the whole social aspect of XBL, which kids love, and there's your answer for the numbers. I don't think Sony is too concerned about it, otherwise they would have dropped the PS3's price before Black Friday. Worldwide PS3 and 360 are pretty close to even, which is something given 360's headstart and lower price for most of the generation. They both got dominated by the Wii... smh

Secondly, I own all 3 consoles, and I'm talking about the Two of the Biggest exclusives in the FIRST HALF from BOTH consoles. This isn't the exclusives list war that you keep trying to play.

Every one knows Last of Us is the biggest game for Sony coming in 2013, but the release date for it, Beyond, and others won't be till AFTER E3. If they are coming in the FALL of 2013 we are talking almost an ENTIRE year.

I'm simply talking AGAIN about the BIG game releases that we KNOW about leading all into E3 2013.

Unless there are some new revelations coming at tonights VGAs or at another first half conference, it is strictly FACT that these are the BIG games that will be released prior to E3.

"Once again, like I've always said, the winner of E3 isn't proven in June, it's proven when the games are released and what follows."

I know that's what you said. I was calling that stupid, in a nice way.

You criticize websites aimed at GAMERS for not deciding who wins E3 based on sales of a couple big games, and instead logically basing their OPINION of who won on their own personal tastes, breadth, quality, originality, and diversity of content, and what it means for their readers when they sit down to play.

It's hilarious that you act like because Microsoft wheeled out stuff like Call of Duty yet again, they won E3, as if it's some official status to be won. Black Ops 2 was going to sell like crazy anyway. But you act like because Call of Duty sold well, blowing 15 minutes of their press conference on it means MS's showing was the best.

Maybe they should just roll out an uninspired showing of CoD, Madden, and Assassin's Creed next year. They're all sure to sell a ton, and since whoever shows them off wins E3, I guess they'd probably be wasting their time trying to spend time on games that could actually use the exposure, right?

You make it sound like I'm upset about Microsoft's success, but I really don't care how well they do. I know you're just getting into your usual, tired, "fankiddie" shtick of attacking anyone who disagrees with you so you can distract from your nonsensical attempt at volunteer MS PR.

nukeitall4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

@MrBeatdown and @EVILDEAD360:

When E3 rolls around it is the minority that speaks, but when the games comes out, it is the majority that speaks. When push comes to shove, and money is laid on the table, gamers voted for CoD, Halo and so on. They ignored PS All Stars and new exclusives time and time again.

These game enthusiasts that works at game sites therefore cater to a minority.

I don't know about being the best, but gamers certainly do care about CoD more than most other games so it seems reasonable to show 15 minutes of that.

Time and time again, there is almost no other game I hear more hate about, but when it is released it is the one game people line up to buy. Sorry, these haters cater to a minority so get over it.

EVILDEAD3604156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

LMAO @ Beatdown

Here is the bottomline.regarless of ANYONE's opinion back in June or now.

People literally pretended that MS somehow failed at E3, SIMPLY because they opened the show with Halo 4 and closed with Black ops 2.

I said it then and I say it now, MS set themselves up perfectly for the holiday, by showing off the TWO most anticipated games of the year on their stage. sony chose the same strategy and banked onthe Assassin's Creed 3 PS3 with the exclusive DLC.

At the end of the day, the holiday results speak for themselves. Those two games are credited as the biggest impact for the success MS has had on NPD this November.

I brought it up because it is the ACTUAL topic of the article.

See I could careless if the usual suspects disagree with me. Because, I'm only expessing my opinion.

But, EVERYONE on here KNOWS why certain profiles have issues ANYTIME someone points to ANYTHING that is in ANYWAY positive for the 360.

I speak on the fankids (not everyone regardless of console preferance), because if I would have come on here screaming i'm going to laugh at you while i'm play Halo 4, Gears of war blah blah blah' and literally spammedthe SAME message 3 times in a row..80 profiles would have jumped down my throat calling me the SAME thing and guess what they would have been perfectly justified.

But look at what 'Riderz1337' wrote above..I rest my case.

Everyone can see through these profiles that BLEED troll and are flaming hypocrites calling other MS PR simply because they can't take off the Sony goggles long enough to realize that people can enjoy ALL consoles without bashing the others.

Case in point..Dragonknight VERY FRST comment out of 3000 is..

'Good to see you mike_mgoblue. For those who don't know, mike_mgoblue is a paid Microsoft employee who goes around and posts nothing but M$ propaganda. Don't listen to a single word he says.'

LMFAO..I cant make this up..and he does this ALL the time.

Omnislash LITERALLY is a GAMING employeee who admitted that he has to 'research' consoles because he knows nothing about them as an ACTUAL gamer..THIS is what OMNISLASH wrote about himself

'I did my research on all 3 systems and the PS3 is clearly the best, I SELL video games and I tell people the facts on all 3 consoles and let them make a decision, 90% of the time they want a PS3. The only time someone wants an Xbox is because theyre huge halo fans or something happened to their last Xbox. The only time they want a wii is usually for their kids.'

Again, I can't make this up..Case closed

Here's the REALITY that the blind on N4G won't admit...Gamers who are truly gaming Fans can speak intelligently on the hobby some of us are passionate about. In fact it's almost prerequisite on OTHER well known gaming forums.

But, again we all KNOW why certain profiles target others on N4G..period.

Keep em' coming...real recognizes real..You can see through the fake ones on sites like glass.

On subject..

One of the breaking news stories, last night at the VGAs dropped that we ALL get to play Last of Us in MAY..BEFORE E3. Which is GREAT news for ALL of us and really makes the rumors of PS4 coming sooner than later start to have some weight behind it.

Interesting times...

Majority, huh? MW3 sold to what... 20% of the 360 owners? That's the 360's best selling game, and that's nowhere near a majority. That other 80% doesn't care about CoD. There is no "majority" in gaming. Not even close.

And hey, let's talk about money laid on the table. Who's been more successful post E3? Well, the PS3 caught up to the 360 in sales. One of those games is on PS3 and doing incredibly well too. That leaves what proving MS won E3? One game, and an edge in sales of one game? Are we just ignoring the other three or four hours of content shown at the conferences?

"These game enthusiasts that works at game sites therefore cater to a minority."

Well, at least you got that right. Might want to let Evil know so he doesn't get his jimmies any more rustled than they already are when websites cater to their audience.

"I don't know about being the best, but gamers certainly do care about CoD more than most other games so it seems reasonable to show 15 minutes of that."

That "wins" them E3 though? That proves all other showings and strategies are inferior, and proves the OPINIONS that others have on those conferences wrong unless they declare MS the official winner?

"Time and time again, there is almost no other game I hear more hate about, but when it is released it is the one game people line up to buy. Sorry, these haters cater to a minority so get over it."

Websites that don't instantly think showing 15 minutes of Call of Duty is the best showing possible are haters? Now I've heard it all.

@Evil

Wow... I quit reading pretty early on. I'm not too interested in reading your term paper.

The fact is, after six months, you drag up E3, and claim the success of a couple games out of dozens "PROVES" which E3 strategy was superior, as if your way of looking at E3 is the only correct way.

You must be pretty bitter over E3 if six months later, you're drumming up some criteria that supposedly "proves" which showing is the best. What makes it all the more pathetic is that you use numbers as the basis of your "proof" and jump to the conclusion that MS won without even seeing sales numbers for other major E3 highlights... the Wii U's staying power for Nintendo, or the sales of major PS3 highlights, like God of War or The Last of Us. And hell, I didn't see you crowing about who did well at E3 when Sony caught up to Microsoft in console sales a few weeks ago, even though that proves that in the aftermath of E3, the PS3 sold better, and is probably the most significant piece of sales data of the year thus far.

Keep trying Evil. You can keep on pretending I'm saying this because of an issue with MS. It doesn't change the fact that the only thing I'm taking issue with, is your idiotic attempt at awarding MS an E3 victory, and criticizing websites for having differing opinions that aren't based solely on sales data for a select few games. Think hard on that. Maybe this time you'll actually get it.

EVILDEAD3604154d ago

'Wow... I quit reading pretty early on. I'm not too interested in reading your term paper.'

Says the guy who just wrote the same term paper in response.

Nah..I KNOW you read it all, simply to find ANYTHING to respond to.

You can't find anything because I kept 100% real in exposing the silly hypocrisy on this site.

I won't bother quoting your term paper. It's simple you keep claiming I said MS only won because of the NPD results.

Completely false. I believed MS won for a range of reasons. Also, your bringing in Nintendo and Sony when this had nothing to do with either of them.

The article is about the 360s great November NPD, which is what MS concentrated on in their E3 presentation and the FACT is it all worked out for them, whether YOU or anyone likes it or not.

No no one is MAD six months later, except bt hurt people who are clearly upset and the 360 success. you should know, that's why your in hear whining with the rest.

Ther hilarious part is pretending a game that is breaking entertainment records like Call of Duty should somehow be judeged by the amount of people who didn't buy the game..lol. That's like claiming that Avatar wasnt a juggernaut because billions of people didnt bother' to go to the theater to see it...LOL

Case closed..moving on

MrBeatdown4153d ago

Lulz.

Evil, you never disappoint when it comes to complete and utter cluelessness.

Your "term paper" of a response to me took up my laptop screen twice over. My response to you took up half my screen. You wrote four times what I did. Most of what I wrote was towards nukeitall. Hence the "@nuke". Complicated, I know.

"Completely false. I believed MS won for a range of reasons. Also, your bringing in Nintendo and Sony when this had nothing to do with either of them. "

Fourth word: "Believed". Believed? As in, your opinion? Last I checked, you were talking about how these numbers "proved what really mattered" and using that as the basiss for attacking different sites' OPINION on E3, as if what you "believed" was factual and can't be disputed. Fact, or opinion? Flip flop, or a less than spectacular grasp of the English language? You decide.

As for bringing up Nintendo and Sony?

Well...

"It's hilarious how the headlines were how MS lost E3"

Ninth word: "Lost". Lost implies losers and winners. If someone "lost", someone "won". That someone would be their competitors. This is how winning and losing works. Raise your hand if you still have a question how that works. If you're using this article to dispute opinions that MS lost, and therefore someone "won," Sony and Nintendo are relevant, even if you'd prefer to pretend otherwise.

Either that or you're an idiot, attacking articles that basically chose the best showing BY COMPARISON, and trying to paint them as inaccurate just because Microsoft's showing was good, irregardless of how well they performed relative to the competition. So again I ask... Flip flop, or a less than spectacular grasp of the English language? You decide.

"No no one is MAD six months later, except bt hurt people who are clearly upset and the 360 success. you should know, that's why your in hear whining with the rest."

And finally, your idiocy hits it's peak with this one. I never had a problem with Microsoft's success. I only took issue with the stupidity of you attacking E3 comparison opinion articles, as if their opinion could be proven wrong, and their methodology in determining the winners and losers was wrong.

The sad fact is that in all your rambling, nothing you said addressed what I was actually saying about you can't seem to separate fact from opinion. You just pretend everyone's out to get Microsoft and hope your drivel gets a pass.

Oh, wait. There's one more fail...

"Ther hilarious part is pretending a game that is breaking entertainment records like Call of Duty should somehow be judeged by the amount of people who didn't buy the game..lol. That's like claiming that Avatar wasnt a juggernaut because billions of people didnt bother' to go to the theater to see it...LOL "

I was disputing the "majority" claim nukeitall used. The MAJORITY does not care about Call of Duty. No game has an appeal so broad that one can say anything about the majority. That's an absolute fact. Don't hate me because I have a firm grasp of the English language.

Well it does say right in the first sentence that its in the US. Maybe people shouldn't just read the title and actually read the contents within it before getting upset about what the title says. The title is true, it's just doesn't say US until the actual the first sentence.

Muerte24944156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

to mention that sales for the month of November for the 360 was down -30% compared to last year. Given how the Ps3 performed better than last year during the week of black Friday, I'm curious to see their number for this month. Last year Sony did about 900,000 for the month of November. I hate that so called journalist are forgetting that USA had only an allocation of 400,000 Wii U for launch.
http://www.examiner.com/art...
Given how anyone can call that a failure is beyond me. Nintendo's Wii U had a 60% attach rate also. Meaning to profit, people had to buy only one game with the system and 60% of people did. You have to be completely oblivious to call that a failure.
Microsoft sold 8.2 million last year holiday quarter getting it's boost from Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3. Given that Black Ops2 sales are nowhere near MW3, I don't see them achieving that again. their already 500,000 behind.

nukeitall4156d ago

@Muerte2494:

"November for the 360 was down -30% compared to last year"

It's likely not mentioned, because it isn't true at all. MS actually sold almost 2 million consoles just a few days over a month:

"It's worth noting, however, that what the NPD Group considers "November" is actually October 28 through November 24, which means that sales from the Sunday and Monday following Black Friday did not contribute."

"As has become the routine, Microsoft holds top honors as far as console sales are concerned, with consumers purchasing 1.26 million Xbox 360s over the course of November and 750,000 during Black Friday week alone."

That is 1.26 million plus 750k which equals over 2 million.

Source: http://www.joystiq.com/2012...

4156d ago
Muerte24944156d ago

@nukeitall
Black Friday week is from November 18th- 24th. So yeah that 750k is added in there. Xbox360 sales last year were 1.7 million.

@DK286K,
I didn't intentionally forget it but thanks for bringing it into the discussion. But like the subscription based $99 Xbox360, the $199 ps3 is was limited too. Compared to last year, Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 helped propel the 360 last holiday season. Halo 4 (got my copy) boosted sales but Black Ops 2 fell a bit short. 40 million of Microsoft 70 million 360 are here in the US. Microsoft needs to do something big to come out this holiday season on top (worldwide).

MysticStrummer4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

No nukeitall, that 750k is included in the 1.26 million. If you read the sentence you quoted, that's what it says.

nukeitall4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

Maybe, maybe not.

Part of the reason why XBL is awesome is because they charge a price and therefore is able to invest more into it. It takes a lot of resources to hire engineers to maintain, create and develop all these things we enjoy.

Take for instance how many times the dashboard has been revamped and how every single app in XBL is customized. It's not the vanilla one all the competitors gets.

So if you took out the fee, I wonder how much of the frequent investment and updates will remain. It has to have some payoff for a company to focus on and invest.

Muerte24944156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

and I can attest that there is no difference between the two services. Actually PS plus offers you free full game download and Full Game trails. Hulu Plus and Netflix interface on the ps3 are more simplistic than the Xbox360 counterpart. I have yet to see Microsoft do an MMO with Xbox Live even though they planned on with Marvel. DC Universe and Dust514 are being done on PSN even though XBOX LIVE has been around for 10years (PSN only 6years).

jimbobwahey4156d ago

It will be interesting to see if Microsoft's November sales in America will be enough to pull them out of last place this generation, now that Sony has overtaken them and shows no signs of slowing down.

Anon19744156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

I think it's doubtful at this point. For the 3 reported quarters this year the PS3 has outsold the 360 by nearly two to one worldwide according to official data. The 360 numbers have been down 40% this year, and even US numbers for Nov have been down 20%. By contrast, PS3 sales are up 8% this year over last according to Sony's official figures, and they just revealed that weekly black Friday figures were also up about 9%.

Even if 360 Christmas numbers are only down 20% and not the 40% they've been the rest of the year, it looks like the PS3 is set to walk away this year worldwide and solidify a second place finish overall this gen. If the 360 was going to show some life, we would have seen it in November. We didn't, we saw continued weakness in their best territory. The rest of the world won't be as kind but as this generation winds down, it's been a helluva ride.

It's funny, I pointed out the fact that the PS3 has pulled ahead of the 360 now when you look at the total picture (70.2 million to 70 million as of Sept 30) and some guy accused me of only looking at data that suited my purpose (whatever that might be), then went on to rant about how well the 360 did during the holidays last year. So I'm cherry picking data by looking at all of it? Oh, the irony!

Sales are down for Xbox360 -22% as oppose to last year. You think they mean nothing but they actually mean alot. This are the numbers from Xbox360 strongest market. US is only thing keeping Xbox360 in the game. Well over 50% of Xbox360's LTD sales are from America. This means less people are buying Xbox360 than there were last year and more people are buying ps3 than compared to last year. Xbox360 has reached saturation in America.

DragonKnight4156d ago

"do you really believe that 360 won't outsell PS3 by more than 200,000 for the rest of the year?"

Given history (meaning the PS3 always outsells the 360 every year globally), and given upcoming games, yes there is no reason to believe the 360 will outsell the PS3.

"Come February, when official numbers for the entire 2011 calendar year come in, we'll likely see more of the same - 360 comfortably back ahead of PS3."

Yeah you wish. Won't happen but keep that hope alive.

Lvl_up_gamer4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

@ DK286K

I don't understand why you have disagrees unless those that disagreed are upset fanboys about the truth or that they are too young to understand percentages.

Possibly you may need to formulate so that that those who would normally disagree can understand better.

Year 1 - Console A sold 1,000,000
Year 1 - Console B sold 500,000

Year 2 - Console A sold 800,000
Year 2 - Console B sold 600,00

Console A sold 200,000 LESS in Year 2 then it did in Year 1 resulting in a -20% decline

Console B sold 100,000 MORE in Year 2 then it did in Year 1 resulting in a
20% increase.

However in Year 1 console A sold 500,000 MORE then console B and in Year 2 Console A sold 200,000 MORE then Console B totaling a lead in sales for console A of 700,000 even though console B shows a 20% increase in year 2 and Console A showed a decrease of -20%.

So as you can see kiddies who disagreed, percentages are a way to spin the factual numbers. This is generally a tactic executives use to show their share holders and board members so that they don't have to give away the actual numbers.

This is MATH people. Disagreeing with MATH just proves your own ignorance and inability to accept truth and facts.

jimbobwahey, everyone here knows I'm a Sony fan but I'm afraid that the PS3 is still behind the 360. Microsoft shipped 1.7 million 360s in 'September' and will have sold them early October. Sony released their 70 million sold in October, which probably included a similar 'shipped' figure.

Every year for the last 6 weeks the 360 outsells the PS3 (sometimes not in the last two weeks but generally speaking it does) This stretches their lead, but then Sony outsells the 360 up until March which wipes any gains they made over Christmas out (in terms of yearly sales). And then the PS3 outsells the 360 for the remainder of the year.

It has been like this for 4 years now which is why the gap has shrunk so dramatically. BUT, please don't think that the PS3 is in the lead based on the 70 million announcement by Sony because the 360 had another months worth of sales AFTER they announced the 70 million themselves. Play fair and be real.

Look to July for what you want, May if the big hitters like GOWA, Beyond, TLOU and Puppeteer sell lots of consoles.

Muerte24944156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

This is what you're missing. Microsoft announce they passed 70 million based on the Quarterly report. Sony's same 70.2 million is from that exact same quarter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik...

If you need more proof here you go.
http://www.scei.co.jp/corpo...
April-Sept = 6.3 million ps3 shipped

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...
63.9 million as of March 31st, 2012

63.9 + 6.3 = 70.2 million ps3 sold

But we won't 100% until early next year. Mid -January for Microsoft and early February for Sony.

GribbleGrunger4156d ago

Yeah, Dante put me right on that too. I'm really surprised. I'd say their not in front but it's certainly not the gap I calculated. The gap must be around the million mark then. Jesus, Sony could lead by March.

Lvl_up_gamer4156d ago

At this point it doesn't really matter who is in the lead.

The next gen already started with the release of the Wii U so this gen which is now actually last gen was won by Nintendo and MS came in 2nd with a close 3rd by Sony.

XabiDaChosenOne4156d ago

@Lvl_up_gamer LOL! I knew some 360 fanboy was eventually going to use that fail argument, such childish tatics. Contrary to what you believe it DOES matter, even after the launch of the WiiU but just to play along... those numbers are from september 30th, thats almost 2 months before the launch of the WiiU. Therefore the PS3 surpassed the 360 in sales almost 2 months before the start of next gen. Call it a photo finish if you will :-)

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 4156d ago
Ryo-Hazuki4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

They dominate the U.S because MS has the pricing edge (the entire gen for that matter) against the PS3. PS3 had limited bundles for $199 which sold out then the cheapest PS3 you can purchase is $270 I believe while MS has tons of Xbox bundles for $199 and if any bundles sell out you can still get an Xbox for $199. Why Sony has limited quantities of $199 PS3 bundles? Due to higher manufacturing cost than the 360 Sony in need of making profit per console so they didn't want to take much of a hit. That's why they never dropped the price of the base model PS3. Next-gen they will learn from their mistakes.

The title is misleading because it's just the U.S and UK. Everywhere else PS3 dominates. Why do you think PS3 is on path to surpass 360's install base...they are only a month behind. All these NPD's cloud people's minds

Ben_Grimm4156d ago

Dont you find it funny though that all of the "world" sales that you and others keep bringing up hardly equals to the amount of sales the US and UK generates alone?

And the core 360 consoles are $250 just like the PS3, not $270. And the 360 with a 4GB is $199, but I personally have not seen a bundle for $199. If so then that is a good deal.

"Why do you think PS3 is on path to surpass 360's install base"

Even the most die hard PS3 fans on this site have given up repeating this statement over and over again. Especially after what, 5/6 years AND at the end of the 360's life cycle.

Hicken4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

If the "world" sales didn't equal the US/UK sales, why is the PS3 constantly catching up?

The PS3 HAS- or had, for a while- outsold the 360 worldwide by about 200k. And while you talk about the 360 being at the end of its lie cycle, maybe you forget that the PS3 is, as well.

Or does that not matter, for some reason?

Edit: And please explain to me how it's lost on you and others that the PS3 is closing in on the 360's sales numbers with a year less time on the market, and at a higher average price to boot?

Care to explain that?

Ben_Grimm4155d ago (Edited 4155d ago )

@Hicken

Oh hicken in full defense mode, shields up I see.

The PS3 is always playing catch up, ps3 fans (YOU ESPECIALLY) have been saying this for the past 5 years. Give it up, the 360 is at the finish line of its cycle.

Oh and I havent forgot that the PS3 is at the end of its cycle which is even worse seeing how it still hasnt caught the 360 in terms of sales.

Come back when you have a point or when you can answer the PM's I so schooled you on that you couldn't even respond because of your lack of understanding.

Edit:
Gawd, I love how you always have to have people explain sh*t to you and yet you have nothing to say yourself.

Please explain how a company who has dominated all this time was able to come in at 3rd place (even with all that fantastic hardware) after a successful PS2 and be beaten by not only the 360 but by a simple upgraded gamecube called the Wii.

Of course knowing you, you will use some tired excuse like "Sony didn't advertise enough" or "360 was a shooter console" or "people were brainwashed" which you have used all three in the past.

YodaCracker4156d ago (Edited 4156d ago )

Every single year the same people say the PS3 is about to surpass the 360's install base and then the holiday season comes and goes, and what do you know? The sales gap is back to the same it was a year ago again. Enough excuses... Just face it, the PS3 is just not as popular as the Xbox 360. Who cares? Just enjoy your PS3. No need to go into damage control mode every holiday season. Microsoft and Nintendo own this time of the year. Just play your PS3 and ignore the sales articles because they will not tell you what you want to hear.

DivineAssault 4156d ago

The US is dominated by MS.. Why? i dont know but everyone is infatuated with Halo & COD on it out here.. I personally see no value in owning xbox or its services.. I will be skipping 720 if theres no killer exclusives & only go with PS4

Xbox Is Not Your Friend

After laying off almost 2,000 people, Xbox finds itself in a position at odds with the community-first image it has cultivated for itself.

kotaku.com.au
TwoPicklesGood4h ago

lol I’m not a big MS gamer but Sony and a number of others have laid off ton of people as well. Where are the ridiculous articles about them not being your friend? Gaming news is such a joke and these sites wonder why they have to beg for money/patreons or flood with 5x more ads.

Profchaos3h ago

I think the sentiment is corporations are there to make money they are not out friends that are harsh and cutthroat when lt comes to the bottom line so why do we proclaim our love for any gaming company from the rooftops when they wouldn't care about us unless we are buying the next thing.

We need to beore objective with how we view these "teams"

Gridknac2h ago

This is the absolute truth. The only part of you these companies, ALL companies, want to be friends with is your bank account. They don't care what they have to say, who's job they have to cut, or what shady underhandedness they must engage in. Bottom line is all that matters.

Vits1h ago

Because people unfortunately make these companies and products part of their own persona, so when they are scrutinized, they see it as an attack on themselves. There is some neuropsychological research around this phenomenon, but it basically has the same effect as religion. It helps foster a sense of community that humans need to feel comfortable. So that is not happening unless we have a sudden surge of people actually understanding how they work and taking control of themselves.

Magatsuhi1h ago

While it's true Sony isn't a friend either, let's not pretend that they're even in the same ballpark as MS's anti consumer practices. Sony is not a friend but atleast they're not an enemy like MS.

derek2h ago

@twopickles, were you not paying attention? Sony was heavily criticized when they laid off people weeks ago, more than Microsoft did with their massive abk layoffs.

Gamingsince19811h ago

I want to know who thought Xbox was community first anyway lmfao

ChasterMies54m ago

That’s Whataboutism. Sony and other game companies didn’t pay more than $80B to buy up publishers. Microsoft said in court that it wasn’t going to have redundancies and fire people. Microsoft told Xbox owners that they would have a AAA on GamePass each quarter. But here we are with Microsoft Game Studios shrinking. Consolidation doesn’t benefit the consumer, and no company has consolidated more than Microsoft.

BehindTheRows50m ago(Edited 49m ago)

Exactly. They love their SonyToo instead of looking at everything in its totality. You spend $80B to buy up so many pubs/devs, you damn well should have something to show for it.

That said, this article is old and someone is clearly looking for clicks!

z2g19m ago

I’m glad you see the thru the reality distortion field so many on this site don’t. My brother-in-law was just let go from PlayStation (here in PV/LA) literally just weeks ago after taking the job just 2 months before. He quite his previous job that was doing just fine to work for Sony.

Christopher10m ago

I agree that every corporation is part of the problem, but bit perhaps in the future have more of an argument than a whatsboutism? It makes it sound like your only issue is that people are complaining about Microsoft.

cthulhucultist2h ago

ok here is a reality check. Tech companies have been firing thousands of employees the last couple of years.

I find it odd that the percentage of employees sacked from MS

QUOTE
"Microsoft announced approximately 1,900 job cuts across its gaming division, including Activision Blizzard, ZeniMax, and Xbox. 8.6% of its colossal 22,000-strong global workforce. "

is worth writing an article condemning the company, when Sony Interactive fired 8% of its workforce (900 people approximately).

https://news.crunchbase.com...

Is the writer concerned about the percentage of the workforce fired or the number of employees?

Lets not forget that Unity laid off 25 percent of its workforce (1800 people) and Discord laid off 17 percent of its employees.

You also have to take into account the AI issue reported in the article. MS is heavily invested in A.I. They have invested in Open A.I (chatgpt 4+Dalle 3), in Abu Dhabi’s G42 and in French AI company Mistral.

These LLMs have already replaced thousands of jobs as A.I usage becomes more common

https://www.cbsnews.com/new...
https://www.theverge.com/20...
https://tech.co/news/compan...

This is the new reality. Even nvidia CEO said that games will fully A.I generated.

https://www.pcgamer.com/sof...

Nevertheless, no company should be ever viewed as "your friend". MS had numerous anti consumer practices in place and the same is true for Sony (not only in video game space) and Nintendo (60$ dollar games without permanent discounts, remasters of 10 year old game with full price, no console price cuts, expensive joy cons which are prone to drift, to name but a few).

Popsicle2h ago

Must be. Thought it to be common knowledge that no corporation is your friend.

thesoftware7308m ago

Hahaha, I was thinking the same thing.

Silly nonsense that applies to all companies. Do people really think these companies care about them? we are consumers, and they track us by $$$, not our character, personality, family, or this over-inflated console war.

rippermcrip2h ago

Xbox had a community-first image? Since when?

PassNextquestion14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

blacktiger12h ago

that's a shame for you to say that, i'm sure Elite loves hearing what you just said.

Profchaos14h ago(Edited 14h ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto14h ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Profchaos14h ago

Possibly guven all the leaks we know the Xbox brand is really struggling in the region.

Yi-Long11h ago

Well, if your consoles and games are barely found in any stores any more, of course you're gonna struggle finding consumers ...

XiNatsuDragnel13h ago

Tbh Microsoft I think Bethesda being 3rd party same with Activision would probably more competitive than thus scenario imo

Profchaos11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

I think it would have been better for all parties really especially gamers

TheColbertinator12h ago

The recently purchased Activision French offices might take over all the licensing and marketing for Microsoft in France from now on.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple10111d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref11d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde11d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander197211d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville11d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff218310d ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos10d ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref11d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan11d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis00710d ago (Edited 10d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander197211d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref11d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde11d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander197211d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander197211d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref11d ago (Edited 11d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier10d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto11d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff218310d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

crazyCoconuts11d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate10d ago (Edited 10d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts10d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic10d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.
