Gaikai: Will Serve Ads, Have a Recommendation Engine, Put “Console-Quality Games on any Device”

Running a cloud service isn’t cheap – you need to have a ton of consoles all set up waiting for people to play them at any given time. Then you need to power them, have crazy fast internet and fight off hackers and bugs. Sony is set to face all of these problems when they launch their PlayStation cloud service, currently titled Gaikai. To help cover the costs, it looks like they’re going to include some ads.

I look forward to playing Assassin's Creed IV on my toaster.

And then when you leave you'll be able to play it on your shoe. Just take your shoe off on the train and hold it up to your head to connect. The space ship satellites will catch the Gaikai signal and beam it down through your lace antenas.

Mounce4152d ago

I look forward to recording your AC4 gameplay videos with my potato.

SuperShyGuy4153d ago

Apparently it's supposed to work in internet browsers.

How are they going to lockout Wii U and 720? Wait 3DS has a browser too!

FriedGoat4153d ago

the same way flash doesn't run on hardly any devices, Plugins.

Rivitur4153d ago

Well it runs fine on browsers as long as the internet is fast crysis 2 ran great on a crappy 2000 dell at my school.

Heartnet4152d ago

Question is would they want to lock out those devices :O

Moneyz on all consoleS!

harrisk9544152d ago

"How are they going to lockout Wii U and 720? Wait 3DS has a browser too!"

The same way that you can't use Netflix, Amazon Prime or Hulu plus, or any one of the other dozens of companies streaming services without having a subscription...

Christopher4152d ago

What does it matter if it runs on a competitor's device if you still have to pay Sony money to utilize it and the games?

MaxXAttaxX4152d ago

Might require some sort of software that will run on multiple devices except for Xbox and Nintendo.

pc station 4?

This will be one of the biggest things sony ever attempted.

I already know the future will not depend on platform kinda like netflix. But how far away will that be?

Will there be cloud service fanboys?

Anyway psn 2 will be awsome I bet.

doogiebear4153d ago

Ads dont bother me if I know it helps sony cover the cost. Small potatoes when u can play ps1-ps4 on any devoce

sikbeta4152d ago (Edited 4152d ago )

In a perfect world, it'd be great to play legacy games on any device, think of PS1/PS2/PSP games on TV->Smartphone ->tablet ->PC while current games (PS3/ Next-gen PS4) being "exclusive" to the respective HW

ATi_Elite4152d ago

Looks at smart Refrigerator and grabs Texas Instruments calculator!

according to SOny they are NOW gaming devices!

ABizzel14152d ago

AS LONG AS IT HAS A WEB BROWSER AND AT LEAST 5MB INTERNET CONNECTION.

Read the fine print, it's at the bottom of the article, but you'll need a x200,000 zoom to see it.

bunfighterii4153d ago (Edited 4153d ago )

I don't care about ads- I just don't think my broadband ad home network works seamlessly enough for this model. Whether its the occasional errors with my wifi network or router solved by turning the router off/on or spotty service where broadband speeds are inexplicably slowed down by my ISP I can see this sort of thing becoming a frustration for me.

kingPoS4152d ago

I feel you on that, I've seen a 20mb connection crawl down to 3mb over at a friends place. Bad s**t happens!

Tru_Blu4152d ago

Same here, my connection can be great one night and a laggy mess the next. Until FIoS comes to my neck of the woods not sold on cloud gaming yet.

aquamala4153d ago

Consoles? Gaikai runs on remote servers.

rainslacker4153d ago

I lol'd at that. The particular point is true, though not technically accurate. It does cost money to run the cloud. How they recoup that money is pure speculation though. It can't be denied that MS makes quite a bit off their ads on Xbox, so Sony would definitely be looking at that in their own implementation.

aquamala4152d ago

This writer must think Gaikai has a network of PS3s waiting for people to log in to play lol, no they run on much more powerful servers

Pillsbury14153d ago

I'm still waiting for true remote play. Playing battlefield 4 on my vita? Please!

FriedGoat4153d ago

Where can I play this battlefield 4?

Pillsbury14153d ago

It's awesome you just need a time machine, you can get them cheap on eBay.

sikbeta4152d ago

Someone did it with L4D on Vita via PSMobile SDK

SAE4152d ago (Edited 4152d ago )

Thats what sony promised us when they add remote controle in vita , im not gonna pay to use it in vita , it is a rip off if you have the game in ps3 and a vita , if they do it i will hack my vita without even thinking , online in vita is useless for me since i cant use my own account so no friends to chat or play with , i also cant see a online game in vita that worth playing , so hacking it will give me what i deserve ....

This service in vita will be more negative then positive for us that have the ps3/vita and the game , or at least for me , but i welcome it in other devices ( hardwares ) , especially in pc ^^

SAE4152d ago

Explain the disagree please , i wanna know whats wrong with my thinking , i just want the feature for free just what they promised us , they show us mgs 4 footage in vita then do nothing with it after it released , what made me hyped for vita is the remote , whats the use of the app then ?. just show off that it can do it ?.

air14152d ago

I agree.. I thought i would be able to play my ps3 games on my vita via remote too..

The fucking sad part is that i seen hackers play the games just fine so why the hell cant sony make it happen like they said they would. Sony half assed it again, what a shame..

Tired4152d ago

'hacking it will give me what i deserve...'

Geohot and Sony lawyers say hi.

Ck1x4153d ago

Sony may not be trying to lock out Microsoft or Nintendo at all. Maybe they are trying to create the equivalent of Netflix streaming for video-games as a subscription based service open to all platforms.

iamnsuperman4153d ago

That would essentially cut out the need for anyone to buy their console. I am not sure how they are going to lock it down but they need to to stop people not buying their next system. What would you buy and PS4 that can't play Xbox/Wii U games or a Wii U/Xbox that can pay PS4 games at a price.

rainslacker4153d ago

Because there is more money to be made off games than off hardware. It doesn't mean that Sony can't still offer a console though. Media capability integration seems to be the biggest trend in tech right now, and having a subscription based service to promote their brand could trump console sales in the long run.

joeorc4152d ago (Edited 4152d ago )

"That would essentially cut out the need for anyone to buy their console. I am not sure how they are going to lock it down but they need to to stop people not buying their next system. What would you buy and PS4 that can't play Xbox/Wii U games or a Wii U/Xbox that can pay PS4 games at a price."

Netflix does not offer every up to date seasons on TV shows for example, season 3 for the Walking Dead not even a single ep.

So imagine exclusives only being on Sony's Console, less worry about 3rd parties making an exclusive or not, 3RD party would be able to reach MORE SUBSCRIPTIONS BECAUSE ITS ON MULTIPLE PLATFORMS ANYWAY and only have to worry about pitching to one publisher for their game!

While 1st party in house Sony developers Exclusives are only found on Playstation systems anyway. Sony's 1st party has full Exclusive Support for Promotion, while 3rd parties get the exposure for their Software on as many platforms as they can. Its a win win.

Panthers4152d ago

Look at Apple. Do you have to have an iMac to use iTunes? No. If Sony plays their cards right, they can allow this to work on any machine, and still sell consoles by make the experience more enjoyable on their own machine. Apple products all work very well together, as does their software. This could be the same for Sony.

iamnsuperman4152d ago (Edited 4152d ago )

@panthers the itunes example you gave is a bad analogy. Apple are forced to do that otherwise they wouldn't sell ipods or iphones (so Apple can make money on those products). Sony need to keep its exclusives on its own console otherwise what's the point of getting that console if I can play those same games on the next xbox (essentially getting out the console business and becoming a online service like onlive.)

Gaikai Talks PlayStation Now

GameInformer- "We recently spoke with Gaikai CEO David Perry about all things PlayStation Now. The longtime developer joined the cloud-gaming company in 2009 and in 2012 Sony acquired it to form the core of PlayStation Now. Check out our interview as we touch on signing with Sony, remote play, what it takes to get a game on PS Now, expansion to more devices, overcoming rough cloud-gaming experiences, and looking to the future."

Great interview and some good opinions about the future of gaming. Sony will dominate if they get the pricing right and bring playstation now to browsers and TV sets. Imagine buying a Sony Bravia and being able to play ps1 and ps2 games without a console? Thats a huge selling point right there. Something they need right now as there TV department is leaking money badly.

Hk85karlsson3501d ago

Ironically, their TV:s are the best for gaming.
Some of the newer ones (from 2013 and beyond) have a superb low input lag.

That was almost plasmas alone back in the day. I like Sony products, I'll get me a Xperia Z3 when it launches.

mkis0073501d ago

The Sony tv's we sell at costco are starting to come with thew ps now beta sticker. ( as in it is available on the tv's already.

ramiuk13501d ago (Edited 3501d ago )

would certainly help fix there tv department losses.
sony brava tv with playtv and ds4 pad would be epic.

there tvs are from 4ms upwards for input lag (best tvs for gaming imo)
i just hope they bring the ps4 stream to Z2,because its what i just got other month and spec wise its same as Z3

KingDadXVI3698d ago

I really don't see the market for this to be honest. I know I will get disagrees but seriously the cost to return ratio is not there right now.

I applaud Sony for making a go of it but I just don't see the "huge quantity" of people needed to pay for this. Most gamers have the old consoles anyway so won't bother to stick with a service that provides backwards compatibility. If it could be provided at a small fee, like $5 per month and still make money then I could see it but is demand really there or will it just be a quick fad where people buy in for a month or two because it is the new thing and then drop it?

Far too small a margin to be realistic IMO and that does not take into account the fact that the broadband infrastructure will not support high quality visuals with no lag time or the net neutrality rulings that are going to continue the bandwidth throttling, data cap pricing pogrom that is happening right now. I think that streaming games will come but it is not ready for prime time yet.

I could be wrong but I think this is a waste of money that could be spent on new games.

@The_Infected "Microsoft talked about cloud power more than anything and they seem to be showing the least of all the other big players."

Which is more realistic?

1. Computing a whole game on a server, sending player inputs across the net to that server, and then sending the results back to the same gamer with out lag or visual compression artifacts at a cost that consumers are willing to pay for. All on games that are old and or currently on the market to own forever at a decent price?

2. Computing physics, AI, visual backgrounds, game hosting providing level playground for all players?

7 Reasons Why You Should Be Worried About PlayStation Now

Sony’s recent announcement of the Gaikai-powered PlayStation Now has got everyone very excited. It’s understandable: the promise of being able to remotely stream games is an attractive one, especially when it’s sold under the premise of being able to do it anywhere, from any device. But all is not as good as it seems. Here are 7 reasons why you should be worried about Sony’s streaming service.

zeee3753d ago (Edited 3753d ago )

Thanks for the warning. I was going to read this but 8 pages for a simple article? Hell no!

If the website owner is reading this, please know that page impressions can also be earned/increased with genuine, unique and interesting content. Splitting it into multiple pages kills the user's interest and makes a site far less user-friendly.

Its just been announced, and we haven't even been told all the info, yet we should be worried?

7 Reasons Why the Competition Should be Worried about PlayStation Now...

*fixed*

@Sethry101, it is a bit ridiculous when every outlet that tested Now came back with the same evaluation - It actually works.

Gaming1013752d ago

lol I can't imagine being worried... what are you expecting Playstation Now is going to cure your brain cancer? Then you'd have a reason to be worried.

If you don't like the service don't buy it, plain and simple. It's not there to save your life, not that you'd have one to save if you're someone who worries over the release of a game streaming service for last gen games.

DigitalHope3752d ago

Not a good or reasonable article. More premeditated doom and gloom.

FamilyGuy3752d ago (Edited 3752d ago )

This article is complete trash, full of inaccuracies.
It's as though the author didn't even look into the information that's been given about the service before typing this up. Just trying to get attention because PS Now is in all the headlines atm.

For example: He says the average internet speed in the US. is 7.4 mbs and goes on to say "most won't have fast enough internet". If the "average" is 7.4 then the majority WILL have a fast enough speed. The last article I read said 5mbs was good enough.

He talks crap about PSN not being good/trustworthy when this service is through Gaikai for one and 2, PSN is already good on PS4. Why else would sony already have its live game streaming services up yet MS is still months away?

Sonys PS Now enable tvs are reported to be launching this summer yet he claims there's "no idea of when the service will reach devices other than PS3 an PS4". Saying "what's the point of having it for PS3 and PS4?" Hmm, let's see: People who don't or never owned a PS3, people who would rather rent or subscribe to a service with tons of games to play rather than buying a bunch of games? People that don't want to spend hours downloading games they could just stream instantly.

This article is trash.

johndoe112113752d ago

7 reasons you should be worried about journalists who write articles like this:

1: Their whole goal is to spread FUD.

2: They write articles without searching the facts.

3: They actually confuse weak minded individuals who generally can't think for themselves.

4: When you click on their articles and give them views it usually means you can expect more trash articles in the future.

5:A lot of them get paid more than a lot of us for writing this filth.

6:They are rewarded for writing opinionated, factually inaccurate, bias, senseless articles that are nothing but pure speculations disguised as future facts.

7: Reading articles like this can actually kill some of your brain cells

Why does there always have to be some negative, doom and gloom article about everything Sony announces?

"It's sounds great, BUT what if it isn't?" O.O
Every single time, all the positive news always has to have a counter-argument by some random as if we can't weigh pros and cons ourselves.

fanboybeatdown3752d ago (Edited 3752d ago )

weird how the author didn't talk about the PING ssue.

It doesn't matter what sustained download speed you have if your PING is poor.

Also: Lag. That's the biggest issue. It is directly related to PING.

LAG has already been shown to be unacceptably high, even when the network connection is perfect. A recent example showed significant lag, even though the rendering server was in the next room:

redwin3752d ago

7 pages, 20 pages, 1 page. It doesn't matter, I'm from the super NES generation. I can speed read and what's more, the thoughts and statements are in the few fist sentences of each paragraph ! But now I see why MS let Sony come out with the cloud gaming first. People approve of Sony. So, we r now really going to see what this generation can really do. But I keep thinking. If they are going to bring all the games to playstation Now, why do we need a ps4? And more to the point. Do you remember when Sony said that playstation is moving to a subscription service?. I'm worry that they are really saying that this PS4 will be obsolete in 2 years.

Sony envisions the hardware market failing and has an escape plan, you wont need a Playstation box in 10 years, both Xbox LIVE and psn will be services or apps on your phone, Hardware is to much risk and its a backwards business, you invest the most at the start and hope you see profits, where most business's start off with profits in mind, consoles arent good business, which is why you will see more free2play, more DLC, more Microtransactions and more subscriptions for PSN and XBL, hell your lucky to see a full fledged manual booklets these days when you buy a game lol

asmith23063752d ago

If their is any indication that the hardware market is going no where any time soon, it is the launch of the PS4 and X1. Over 7m between them in six weeks. They are incredible numbers.

jackanderson19853752d ago (Edited 3752d ago )

DanielGearSolid3752d ago

Ha! They changed it to one page!

gman_moose3752d ago

7 reasons why this article shouldn't exist...

But rather than waste my time, I will state one:

Before Playstation now was announced, my life was perfectly fine, and now that PS now has been announced, my life is still perfectly fine. Why be "worried" about a service that's simply an added option to what I already find enjoyable. It's not like videogames as we know it are going away and this is replacing them. So sick of these idiotic opinion pieces getting approved as news. Time for N4G to get some standards on who they approve. A blind monkey could get an opinion piece published as its stands now.

ALLWRONG3751d ago

You weren't talking about a multiple page article.

GutZ313752d ago (Edited 3752d ago )

"1. We Don’t Know the Price"

Sorry, but that doesn't mean we should be afraid. It is a service that is elective, not needed for other functions to work on your devices.

"2. Your Internet is Probably Not Good Enough"

Sorry again, but the US statistics say otherwise. Avarage household internet speeds are well above the suggested 5Mbps minimum, at 8.5Mbps.

"3. It’s Only Going to be on PS3 and PS4 (At Launch)"

Fear? for this? Come on, thats like saying don't get an Xbox One because it wont have twitch at launch...

"4. Sony’s Not Great at Internet Services"

Fair enough. But again, not really something to be totally afraid of.

"5. It’s Only Coming to the USA"

No, it was recently stated that Europe would have it this summer as well... *EDIT* My mistake, its only US, sorry UK
:(

"6. No Games Have Been Announced"

Are you serious? No games announced makes it a scary thing?
Whens the last time a service blatantly told you every movie that is available on say, netflix from its inception?

"7. You’ll Need A DualShock 3 (Even When You’re Mobile)"

False. You will need a controller for these games, but that doesn't mean it has to be a dualshock3.

The only legitimate concern I saw in any of those was Sonys network strength. But now that they are using a subscription service, they have been much more forward thinking in regards to server power. We should see much more from sony by the end of summer, if not earlier.

*EDIT* Sorry, late to the party with the USA only launch, that sucks a bit. Still need to wait and see what they say about that.

Bladesfist3752d ago

You are confusing MB with Mb. The average is 8.5Mbps.

jackanderson19853752d ago

in regards point 5, when did they say it was coming to europe in the summer? all i'm seeing from google is "complex region, different providers" etc etc

GutZ313752d ago

My bad, a little late to all the reversals. Even the playstation blog had it on their EU site...

Sethry1013752d ago

Agree with almost everything you say, other then while sure when It releases in the US most peoples internet should be fine. As for other countries connection speed might be a bit of a worry to those hoping to use the service.

GutZ313752d ago

Yeah, But at the same time, hopefully it pushes all countries infrastructure towards a more connected, and advanced human existence.
Or just make it faster for people to look up funny pictures of cats.

kewlkat0073752d ago

@GutZ31 - you think a video game system is going to push the worlds network infrastructure to be better? lol

GutZ313752d ago

@Kewlkat lol, no. But i wouldn't rule out streaming media to push advancement, and adoption of new technologies for all that find it convenient.

Onlive didn't change the world.
Sony isn't going to change the world, but if everyone continues copying...

Prime1573752d ago

"Sony's not great at internet services."

This type of hate always perplexed me because ms always had you pay to use live and this is the first time Sony has made you pay. In August 13, Sony made 140$ mill off of ps+ and ms made 5.6$ BILLION off of live.

It's unfathomable to throw comments like this around, it's also annoying when someone points out the pay wall. I wonder why there's a pay wall, 360 lover? Because competition dictated.

NexGen3752d ago

In regards to your number 4...Sony may have had issues with PSN before, but this is operating on the service they bought - Gaikai. PSN speed/stability is fully separate from this.
