Are We Already Playing The Next Gen?

We all know the big dogs at Sony and Microsoft are carefully planning their next generation of consoles and with powerhouse, eye meltingly gorgeous games such as Star Wars 1313 and Watch Dogs being showcased at E3, the next generation is slowly becoming a reality.

I am excited for the new Metroid, and Zelda game engines. Nintendo says that they have never done anything so graphically ambitious. Zelda is supposed to be the biggest Zelda world ever. With the new tech in Wii U I am looking forward to seeing what 1st party games look like. Wii U may not be a PS4, but it does have new tech that according to Ubisoft has not been fully utilized yet. PS4 I can only imagine, but I am not going to pay $499 for a basic console at launch, like it was last time. I have only had PS3 for 3years.

Let's not play semantical games. Wii u is a next generation Nintendo hardware but not a next generation upgraded system. Wii u is a continuation of a generation where it doesn't offer anything new or upgrade to console hardware core gamers have been use to. It's like how ouya is being released but not considered next gen because we've experienced and used similar tech before.

Wii u is a continuation of the first hd gaming era for consoles. It doesn't offer anything that the xbox and ps3 can't do especially the ps3. I've never seen a bunch of fanatics try to clutch onto the idea of something that they like being more than it is like NES fanatics. Some people are Nintendo fans, they accept the truth and what the Wii u is without being liars milling about lying to people about something that isn't. They accept the faults and truly don't care about the truth of the console being weak and inferior to xbox and ps3.

The NES fanatics are a different set who can't accept anything that differs from their deceptive views. They'll shout abuse, vote people down, and all sorts because someone's views are different or someone is actually being realistic about the Wii u or anything Nintendo. These are the sort that'll tell you the Wii is better than a xbox, or uncharted looks like crap, killzone 2 tech was done better in conduit and all sorts of rubbish I've seen fanatics say.

The truth about the Wii u are easy to see from the games and exclusives out. Most ports are worst on the Wii u, and the exclusive titles are akin to cheap games people would buy on xbl and psn. They'll tout about how the Wii u is easy to program for , well ok but why do the games look so bad compared to xbox and ps3.

I can't wait for xbox 720 and ps4. I want improvements in every thing I've been use to on this gens hd system and don't want a continuation of corner cutting or more of a very limited game. Games will still have limits next gen but devs will be able to improve upon a lot with less limit

Thats not exactly true. Super Mario Galaxy for one had many graphical techniques not done in any game. Its a super optimized game and looks really good especially for a underpowered console. If you take previous games from nintendo, they have done many things in regards to water simulation (mario sunshine), artistic depth of field (zelda skyward sword), perfect slicing like in metal gear rising (skyward sword), lots of relfections (galaxy), rim lighting (galaxy), etc. All in all, even if one game made by nintendo didn't have a ridiculously large amount of graphical features, putting the experience behind all of these games, the developers have worked with just as much graphics techniques as developers on PS3 and 360. Besides, games like skyrim don't have any big lighting or model detail effects, simply large draw distances and that was also done by nintendo for xenoblade.

I want the PS4 and the next Xbox aswell. That doesn't change the fact the next generation started when the Wii U launched. So who sold the most systems THIS gen? The Wii. Making the Wii U (wait for it.....) NEXT GEN. The fact Nintendo CHOSE to not have power be their main concern was their own choice. I personally don't like it, but that doesn't stop it from being their next system released. Making in next gen. 'Whether' people like it or not. :P

These are the console generations (since Nintendo)

- NES and Sega Master System
- SNES and Genesis
- N64 and the PS1
- Gamecube, PS2 and Xbox
- Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360
- Wii U, PS4, Xbox(whatever is going to be called)

It may be the next generation in the Nintendo line of consoles but it sits side by side with current consoles in a realistic perspective. If it worked like that the Xbox would sit in line with the SNES as it is Microsofts second gen.

When people refer to next gen they are talking of a leap in technological advancement (something that has happened at the start of EVERY generation so far) and the WiiU simply doesn't have that.

Sony struggled out of the gate and got boned by their 600 dollar price point costing them millions. Microsoft had the RROD fiasco which costed them millions. The Wii is also much less powerful than the PS3 and 360 but no one will deny that is a console from the 7th generation just like the PS3 and 360. PS2 was also weaker than Xbox and GC and no one will deny that its a console from the 6th generation. The 8th generation started with the Wii U. Even if the Wii U was as powerful as a NES it would still very much be a 8th generation console.

The Wii is pretty much a last gen console because it shares the exact same architecture with the GameCube (two GCs ductaped together anyone?) and only offers a new interface.

So for the exact same reason the redesigned Xbox Kinect revision and the new Playstaion+Move revision are not "next gen" because they offer a new interfaces, the Wii isn't a current gen console. It's a last gen console which sold pretty well (not as well as the PS2 though).

The WiiU is a generational leap over the original Wii, which actually makes it a current gen console (with hardware pretty much at the same ballpark of specs of other current gen consoles).

Wow when will people realise that the WiiU is a next gen console.

If its not a next Gen console then the PSX was not in the same Gen as the N64 because it was not as powerful as the N64.

Power dose not mean next gen. This world is really starting to get power mad.

I remember when PC games ruled the world but then developers starting making there game only for the most up to date computers and people started to switch to consoles because it was costing to much.

Its now the same in the phone market people take about there phone having a better processer in there phone over another but again this is not what makes the Phone good its the software.

Look at Android. It is a updated version of what Wimo was back in the early 00's but has only started to become a stable OS over the last 2 years yet IOS and Windows Phone will run without any issues on a single core phone and is also faster at doing tasks ect.

Its the same with Windows 8 over Windows 7 it runs better on older hardware.

I got my WiiU on Friday and I have to say I am really impressed with it. I was not a big fan of the Wii and I cant remember the last game I picked up for it but it has had some very goods games but over the last few years it has been all about the 360 and PS3 for me.

I got ZombieU, MarioU, Nintendo Land and Sonic AllStar Racing for my WiiU and for me ZombieU is ever Old style Res fans must own game. The graphics are very good. The Horror side to the game is the best ive seen since Res 4 and its a challenging game to.

MarioU its Mario back to his best in a side scrolling screen.

Sonic Allstars is a fun game and reminds me of DK racing on the N64 and will keep me going until Mario Kart is out.

Nintendo Land is the game that suppressed me though it is a very fun game to pay with mates and family and shows off what the WiiU is capable of.

I too cant wait for the Next Xbox and PS4 but I do think both MS and Sony will have a very hard job knocking Nintendo off top sport again this new gen as the WiiU is a very very good console and offering the different ways to play the games will appeal to more people again.

That's not true; rim-lighting and reflective surfaces are not new in console games, just new to the Wii. It looked good only because it didn't rely on any realistic graphics lighting techniques which the Wii was bad at creating.

No what they meant was the amount of detail that is going into the "worlds" Disagree if you want, but Metroid on Wii was very nice and at the time it came out it looked every bit as good as a 360 game. The 360 was newer at the time, and just like with Wii U the developers had not optimized there programming for it. With more power than PS3 I can only imagine what Nintendo's first party games are going to look like. The new game engines are built by Retro. I am pretty sure they are going to fully utilize the Wii U. The launch games are just that launch games. Wii U is still doing what it took developers 6 years to do on these systems. Developers of Assassins Creed 3 said that 4 years ago they never thought such a game would be possible on current gen consoles, but they learned programing "tricks" to make the games work the way they would like.

when this gen kicks of properly, i.e. when all systems are released last of us graphics are going to be the norm. some people think were going to get super computers with ultra realistic graphics but a high end gaming pc cant do this so its not going to happen. no console ever has highend pc components its too expensive and smart people would just fork out the extra cash for a gaming rig thats upgradable. console gaming is ment to be a reletivly cheap and easy way to game for those who cant afford or dont know how to make a gaming pc.

GTA V is going to be sick it used the new engine they used in Max Payne 3.

I wouldn't say it's next generation but it definitely tells me next generation games are going to look bad ass, if not even that much more bad ass I don't mind really, graphics don't make a game but the added processing power and GPU power will definitely add an entirely new realism to console gaming at least.

I mean even though I won't probably get a 720 or bother with Microsoft this time around, I still know when it comes to not screwing around with their consoles hardware wise... (Not including Xbox's horrible red light and poor heat sink design for the first couple years but they fixed it.) Sony and Microsoft really push their hardware to the limits.

So I am excited to see but also at the same time worried, people have been losing so much money due to this ignorance over smart phones and tablet gaming, pathetic excuse for gaming if you ask me but that is another subject. Regardless it is taking a toll on everyone even Nintendo.

i think the wii u is going to be able to put great graphics if developers give it time, it's even running unoptimized ports with only a few framerate issues. The wii u simply needs a game that shows off what it can do like the gears of war game did for the xbox 360.

It's a sad reality I have come to face years ago when EB games stopped taking PC games for trade in's. That was the day I knew PC development just was coming to a halt. Sadly it has, sure we still get some good games but remember when the only good games were on PC?

Exactly, times have changed and sadly chances are the 720 and PS4 could actually have Supervision (4K) which is way higher than any definition of HD available.

So I wouldn't hold your breath on PC anymore. It's somewhat dying off just like consoles and handhelds are, I mean they will always be around but their time is passing.

Before all we had were killer PC games and when you talked about that epic bad ass game it was always, I mean always was on PC, but that changed and consoles became more like PC's then everyone focused more on consoles. Now the same is happening with consoles, with smart phones and tablets because that is all anyone is focusing on now..

I mean look at Windows 8 for god sakes, a fucking smart phone and tablet OS. That shit makes my stomach turn every day I see computers turning into crappy tablets.

Thing is Supervision or 4k what most call it in the US blows HD, any HD definition out of the water by like 10x.

So honestly who knows what new consoles could sport, Supervision TV's right now are very expensive but by the time these new consoles are released they could be much cheaper and it will be the whole HD craze all over again.

Trust me I even laugh at HD really, Hell I have this NEC CRT Monitor that is literally like 12 years old now.. thing was around way before HD TV's and it's resolution still goes far beyond 1080p which is most HD's standard.

So HD even now is still somewhat of a joke to me, it more like a marketing term used to lure idiots into buying something that really isn't even new.

Supervision is no joke though it's the most advanced by far even any monitors I could buy can't go that high as far as resolution is concerned unless they are Supervision monitors which I haven't really looked into, I am sure they exist but regardless Supervision will become the new high resolution standard for everyone and it's not just a marketing term either this time around it's actually just as the name sounds.. Super Vision.. I wouldn't be surprised if it's higher resolution than our eyes can even comprehend if that makes any sense..

Just like most people don't realize our eyes can only really comprehend 60Hz frequency, even though a lot of TV's and Monitors now days go way above that. Technically your eyes will only notice the smoothness created by high frequency refresh rates, other than that it actually can't even see at refresh rates that high on it's own.. which the human eyeball maxes out at 60Hz.

So anything higher is actually split between your eyes if that makes any sense you aren't actually getting the full refresh rates in both eyes and if it goes higher than 120hz, its practically beyond noticeable at all with the human eyes then..

I'll never be able to play a Naughty Dog game on the WiiU though will I. And if that's what I want then whether or not it can do what the Xbox360 or PS3 can 'only dream of' (I doubt it- have you seen Uncharted 2 - and that was a few years ago) becomes less important. At best with the WiiU we're probably looking at minor graphical improvement as a result of little more than careful use of the features that are slightly better and clever art design. For instance, they reckon some WiiU games have a blue tinge to them to make them look a bit futuristic. It's hardly a Dreamcast-like leap in to the graphical unknown is it. But I still think that the WiiU will sell between 50-65 million as a result of the huge Wii userbase and curiousity from long time gamers who've spent 5 years looking at Wii and thinking 'if only it looked slightly better I might have got one...'.

If the WiiU ends up getting sales of about 100 million though then it's the mainstream buying one yet again as the latest toy. They pay little or no attention to tech specs or even if rival consoles might have artsier games.

I will agree that the Wii U is a next gen console,but you can't honestly believe any of the launch titles truly tapped the potential. The launch was mainly ports, I feel they would have benefited from launching something that at least felt it was made from the ground up for the wii u and used its strengths. That is just me personally. I am glad this is a long generation because it forces developers to be more creative even when they try to sequelize they have to add something new to sell people

I do agree with your comment, I was just stating those games are last gen as it annoys me when people think generations are dependent on graphics or power as apposed to when they are realised. I'm quite happy with the line up so far, it could be better with as you say more games built solely with the Wii U in mind but for now even with mainly ports I would say it's definitely worth the price tag.

I agree again, I want gamers to be more how they were last generation(PS2,Xbox,gamecube) which was less focused on graphics and more on gameplay. Flashing lights is great,but if it is not fun or challenging than what is the point. I believe we are playing the next gen already and in terms of the "true" next gen. I just look forward for developers to be able to do more in terms of AI, framerate,gameplay elements pretty much everything other than graphics. I want to see unique art styles and not everyone dying for realism. Developers will have no excuses for limits at least for a long long time. This generation made them squeeze more out of it than graphics.

@waltercross unlike you i own both systems and I'm telling the Wii u can do thing ps3 cannot that is a fact ans about games when a game is made properly for Wii u then we can talk and compare. the only thing Wii u can't physically do than ps3 is bluray playback but it does use bluesy technology and connect to vita but Sony would sue. do you own a vita. I'm guessing not, as I said I do own a ps vita and ps3 and they cannot do between the TWO systems that Wii u does on its own, add 3ds crossplay (monster hunter) it does the same and more.

I've been gaming on the 360/ps3 since launch, and I can not wait to get a WiiU at Christmas. I think the WiiU looks like a lot of fun and that's what I want from a console.

I will get the next Xbox, maybe once it goes down in price. I can see it being a good £500 at launch.

Just a word on Farcry 3 on consoles- its impressive but not amazing- the draw distance is fairly limited, and the screenshots are all from a fully optimised PC build. I've completed about 50% of the game on PS3 and I can its graphical achievement is great but not as great as this article makes it out to be.

PC is always on the cutting edge if you can afford it.
M$ strategy (if rumors are to be believed) is straight out of the funny farm. Xbox TV for the casual players/Xbox app users and a pricey as f*&k console for the "core" user (which I'm sure will still have an OS that is 98% Ad space)
and SONY will play the waiting game to see what it can copy and try and do best from both Nintendo and M$ added with their cloud based solution.

This is getting pretty stupid... 'Next Gen' ? How about the new xbox and ps4 will already be 2 generations behind a current generation PC? Seriously...

Food for thought - How much does a 'current gen' top of the line video card cost? $600 dollars (GTX 680) - if your a serious PC gamer, you most likely have 2 of those, and a rig that goes along with it - 2500-3000 dollars = current gen when it comes to graphics department.

Unless the next xbox or ps4 are going to come out with a price point of 700+, it is not really going to be anything much better then the Wii U. Who cares anyway? The Wii U doesnt suck, the xbox doesnt suck, the ps3 doesn't suck - they are all great systems with great games. Why is everyone so interested on which if faster? At the end of the day, its about the games, the person and what they like.

Also, its annoying to read so many ignorant comments about the Wii U - coming from someone who has a PC (battlefield 3, Diablo 3), a PS3 (Uncharted) an Xbox (Gears of War) and now a Wii U - I can assure you that black ops, for example, runs/looks and plays much better then the xbox/ps3 version. The sad part? I BOUGHT the xbox version of black ops (couldnt wait lol) and RETURNED it for the Wii U version, why? Simple, the gamepad... Perfect example - playing split screen black ops 2 on the xbox or ps3 downgrades the graphics (lowers the resolution and draw distances) and puts two who black bars on either side of your screen. The Wii U? One of my friends uses the pro controller (xbox controller ripoff) playing on the TV, and the other uses the gamepad, it looks even BETTER on the gamepad because the screen is much smaller, and the perspective from the user is that it looks so much clearer - same principle of playing black ops on a 70" TV vs a 47" tv - the 47" will look 'sharper' simply because the pixels dont have to stretch to fill all 70" (given that it is 1080p).

Anyway, done with my rant - but you guys are all idiots for the most part.

That isnt to say the Wii U is the best out there - but FOR ME, it is. If you want to argue current gen - then your an idiot, that was my original point. The new xbox, ps4 and the recently released Wii U all suck when it comes to power and graphics, plain and simple (compared to a 'current gen' PC).

Went off on a tanget above - but the point I was making was - console makers cannot AFFORD to even come close to competing to PC's - a console = a very slow/old computer with a decent GPU. This translates into the next xbox/ps4 using PC hardware from 3-4 years ago to make it cheap enough to sell at 300-400 dollars.

I actually want a console that makes developers execute their games as intended by the same. Old hardwar means vast knowledge to plan and execute. Not entirely a bad thing.

Only the top of the crop of developers can and will use newer systems as intended by that game they develop. That's my experience.

Developers of lesser kind do have a span on using older hardware while phasing out the old and starting with getting on to the new gen.

So, I hope little of a few companies, coming the new next brilliant ultra bright coloured epic awesome dope gen.
