What can we really expect from the next console generation?

Gamesradar- The Wii U's launch marks the transition out of the longest console generation in gaming's history. Yes, even if you think Nintendo is just playing HD catch-up, the Wii U is the beginning of the eighth generation of consoles--Wikipedia says so! Traditionally, the advancement in technology from one generation to the next led to enormous gains in visual quality, which, software aside, was often the marketing focus of any console. Advertisements would scream "look how great the pictures look on this thing!" and kids would point, jaws unhinged, and proclaim how "real" pixelated water was.

So we got to thinking: What can we really expect from games a few years down the road? Surely they'll look better--but will the increase be as dramatic as it had been in generations past?

game improvements all around with other console features. next gen consoles the xbox 720 and ps4 will be a lot more powerful than the xbox 360 and ps3. theyll be able to create more realistic environments, and improve upon gameplay elements with smarter npcs and all sorts which will lead to better immersion in games. physics, animations, sound, controller feed back, 3d, faster multitasking, graphics etc will be improved.

I agree that all that may be possible, but someone still has to make these games and make them with a set budget. The bottleneck isn't so much the hardware, it's the developers and the resources they have at their disposal. New hardware isn't going to address that and that has a direct impact on the quality of the games we'll see. I mean, all these things mentioned are available to PC users right now and have been for years, but how often do we see a developer playing to these strengths? Not very often.

Interestingly enough, what we are seeing is more developers willing to take on smaller projects for digital distribution, and really that's where I think we're seeing the evolution of gaming. With multimillion dollar games pushing system specs, you need those games to do well or else you're out of business and so you take fewer risks. I think if anything, we'll see more smaller, made for download type games next gen and those are the games that's where the innovation will happen.

just give us some sort of real time ray-tracing, maybe is too much to ask but is not bad having a dream once in while ;)

If you are talking about Nintendo then I think you mean to say that they just joined this gen. (I will be getting one for my kids and plan on playing it to but c'mon man)

We can expect Sony to keep bringing great exclusives and value for our entertainment. Long live play.

StrongMan4155d ago

Exactly. Sony will be the only company to give core gamers core games. Both Nintendo and Microsoft have turned their backs on the core gamers.

JBSleek4155d ago

You can say that even though Halo 4 possibly the greatest fps of the generation just came out? That's bold. Yes Sony brings it but let's not act like MS hasn't either.

Hopefully better gameplay from all genres. I dont expect a huge graphic leap. And less shooters cause there was a TON of shooters this gen.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.
