The Spike Video Game Awards haven't exactly been a priority for gamers as of...ever. When it debuted in 2002, fans watched eagerly, and the show just went downhill from there. Finding out gaming was big enough to get its own award show was epic, but the show's presentation, focus on pop culture, and general lack of regard of anything, you know, GAMING, has made it something gamers want to avoid rather than eagerly anticipate.

I really hate award shows. They are all the same. You could distill it to a sheet of paper and save everyone the time and agony of having to watch the same thing over and over again.
Honestly, GOTY is a worthless title anyway.
