Bungie's Destiny Story Details, Concept Art Leaked

Leaked materials provided to IGN by a reader have revealed story details and concept art from Destiny, Bungie’s follow-up to the Halo franchise. Bungie has confirmed to IGN that the document was prepared by an advertising agency and represents an outside look at Destiny’s plot, key values and more.

The concept art looks amazing. It looks like a cross between Halo and Star Wars. The story already looks like amazing sci fi fare:

I always love the whole premise behind first contact with aliens. Like in the original Halo, there was this sense of awe- what are these aliens? They look so unique with weird commanders and little funny grunts running around. Why is there a ring shaped planet? Imagine having that plus the back story on Earth itself.

Imagine if this is an MMO. Experiencing that world with your mates. The story I assume will gradually develop to introduce new races and we might have a Mass Effect type scenario where humans try to work their way into a sort of community of different alien species.

I wish this was cross platform. It's really about time we bridged the gap with gamers. The divide is superficial in such a technologically collected world.

It sounds like an MMO in the sense of Planetside 2. Planetside 2 just feels like Battilefield with a map that is 16x the size of the largest battlefield map and has at most 2,000 players on one battlefield. I was impressed as hell with it. Even the graphics shares similar things that frostbite 2 and cryengine 3 have like realtime GI.

Anyways, Destiny sounds like Planetside 2 but with more freedom to change to other areas (planets) since you are exploring together in a skyrim way.

I actually am super excited except for the fact that activision has a contract with them. I just don't want any bad influences to come through like limiting gameplay to the lowest common denominator (X360/PS3) and having X720/PS3 and especially PC be held back/not fully utilized.

I'm pretty sure both Bungie and Activision would be open to a simultaneous launch on both platforms. It's clearly intended to be multiplatform, so it makes sense to make it multiplatform from the start.

Being a Microsoft-only studio for years, it makes sense that Bungie would cover their ass, and not contractually obligate themselves to release a game on a platform they were unfamiliar with, especially on day one. But if they found a simultaneous release to be doable, I doubt Bobby Kotick is going to have a cow if it is on PS3 from the start. I'd expect Activision would be thrilled with the opportunity to help Bungie accomplish that.

Two years ago some folks didn't suspect next generation consoles either.

I say primary platforms will be PC, PS4, XB3. Why PS4 version in 2014? Maybe PS4 doesn't launch until Mid 2014. While XB3 and PC get a version in 2013 at XB3 launch window. :)

VGA premiere or E3 showing should set it up for its real and final platform choices. I suspect Activision will be running non-stop to put it on every platform they can and beg Bungie to use the same game engine for 10 years, but I hope Bungie keeps up with tech and pushes forward the right way. :)

It's not an "IF", it's a "when". Which brings me to my next point. You say it will be YEARS, but Bungie is contractually obligated to have it done a year after its 360 release, if they chose to do it.

So even after Bungie acknowledges the leak is legitimate, basically confirming it's going to be on PS3, you still act like it's a maybe, act like it's several years away, even though we have known for months that that isn't true, and you flat out assume it's not designed with PS3 in mind.

So yeah, I'm thinking he has a point.

Although it likely won't happen cuz microsoft owns halo, but would be awesome if HALO and DESTINY were connected somehow. Not in terms of gameplay or anything that would restrict it but maybe as a part of the hugeeee halo universe.

In halo, humans existed 100,000s of years before present time and were technologically superior. They didn't even know forerunners till later when they were de-evolved.

It would be cool if these were those humans in like 110,000 BC on a different planet having a war among themselves. And i mean if it's only related to halo in concept it's not infringing on anything.

Well the teaser image shows a ps3 at the bottom. I really hope its not timed exclusive and all platforms get the game at the same time

Well around the time after Reach, the whole Bungie/Halo website (Bungie.net) had massive posters hiring PS3 devs.

They also said that they want the game to be very immersive, taking full advantage of the CPU (so, possibly PS3 version excels at that part). They wanted snow, and leaves to drop on the ground, and still be on the ground instead of disappearing straight away etc.

That's promising. I am not the kind of PS3 fan who lauds it up over X360 fans when traditionally X360 exclusive devs or franchises migrate to my console of choice, but I have to say, I am quite pleased about this. In the same way I am pleased thatgamecompany seems to be heading for multiplatform in the future - I still find it tragic so many gamers have missed out on the brilliance of Journey, so I think it equally a shame that so many miss out on Bungie's obvious talents.

Looking forward to it! Here's hoping they hired decent PS3 devs tho - as much as I love my Sony box of joy, it does get tiresome having to wait to hear if a game you are looking forward to got graphically shafted in the development/porting process or not. I hope Bungie is more committed to console parity than some other devs I could mention.

I'm not sure if it is an MMO like the rumours would have us believe (at least originally), as the releases are 2013,2015,2017,2019, with DLC one year after each release.

I think it might be a borderlands type of game, as they are creating large spaces, plus it's 'social at its core', which might mean a Borderlands with a higher player count.

Either way, colour me excited.

Based on the concepts, story arch and the world you can tell this is gonna be a MMO based on the sorta gameplay (IGN mentioned) and giant world Bungies making for us.

Definitely real, long standing game franchises sounds pretty much like Bungie. Thanks to Halo, its evident they make Ips that are truly memorable and make games that people want to play from years on end.

Bungie just doesn't make a game, they make THE game.

I believe Bungie are developing it MS's console (whether this or next gen) - and Activision have the right to find another studio to port/recode it for other platforms. That's going on the Bungie/Activision contract details that were leaked during the Epic/Silicon Knights lawsuit.

While Bungie are a big studio - they'e not Rockstar "we're big enough to develop GTA independently on 2 different consoles simultaneously with 2 massive teams" big.

OT - That sounds epic. Great concept. I'd had an inkling (after Reach) that it might be a revival of Wing Commander/Privateer/Elite sci fi space combat - looks like I wasn't even half right!

the first installment will be on ps3/360, anything after 2013 will be on next gen, if you read you will see they are releasing installments in 2014,2015,2016,etc.

They can take in-engine screenshots from any platform for promotional material; i.e. if it runs on PC they can use PC screenshots (even if the game won't release on PC). They can't use those same screenshots in advertising material for the game on other platforms though (without probably getting fined over it in various countries). Anyway, they could also just take 1 frame from the game running at about 5fps on a 360/PS3 with the graphics settings up high.

Like pretty much every console game (especially multiplats) released recently, it will look worse on your TV than in promotional material - that's just the standard for marketing now.

Also, the engine will no doubt also be built for next-gen machines (aka Linux/PC with a few little tweaks)

According to that terrible contract leaked a while ago, Bungie are going to burn PS3 gamers when this game releases by having it release a year later than Xbox. If this is still the case, then it is a horrible move which I'm sure the industry won't benefit from.

Not really. They were let of the Microsoft leash, only to find out that with Activision they are on a chain, with a shock-collar.

I'm looking forward to a real reveal for this game as the tidbits we've seen look and sound epic. With all the varied concept art it just looks massive and the range is impressive.

I have no clue if it'll be an MMO (maybe of guild wars sort--large social hub and smaller "party" regions), borderlands-style open world, or even more Haloish in design (but grander in scale I bet) but I can't wait to find out. Since its "social" any of those seem possible and with release schedule a "standard" MMO design seems out of the question. Granted could always be something completely different but those seem like the most likely choices to me.

I hope it has a cool campaign on top of stellar multiplayer and since Bungie is making it, it should be a safe assumption. Curious how it'll play out and just can't wait till the "real" speculating begins after initial reveal.

Personally I hope they expand the multiplayer from Halo and add a bit more Battlefield/Battlefront to increase realism and expand scope of battles. Basically no more bunny hopping Spartan super soldiers, bigger and more bad@ss infantry/vehicular combat, but still have some cool weapons and tech like Halo/Battlefront allowed. It would definitely fit my "7 year old inner child" to take part in fights like those in all the blockbuster movies nowadays ;) Or for those a little older (or just like myself), fights like Hoth/Endar/etc from Star Wars which were massive and still "family friendly" enough for kids to enjoy.

Plus the whole "Star Wars" mentioning from Bungie seems like they might have taken some inspiration from it in terms of still having some mature themes but laced with a bit of everythng else just peeks my interest. All of my favorite sci-fi shows/movies had that in common (star wars of course, Firefly, Farscape, etc).

Again, I just can't wait for a reveal and although I don't want to overhype it or expect things I just hope its fun.

Plus I'm not overly worried about going for a wider audience as there are plenty of ways for a possible "T" rated game or PG 13 movie to still entertain with darker themes while not being a "kiddie" game (every star wars game for one: violence with minimal/no blood and very little/no cussing... same being true for blockbuster movies).
