GameRevolution: PlanetSide 2 Review

GR writes: "In comes 2012’s PlanetSide 2 to save the day, or at least it hopes to. It comes in swinging with ambition to deliver the large-scale combat everyone wants to be a part of, mixed with the depth of an MMO, all with no financial investment needed. But does PlanetSide 2 deliver on its potential, or is it just another false blip on the MMOFPS radar?"

"Where’s the MMO? Am I missing something?"

Thousands of players. Character progression. What more would you need? Well written review but I disagree with most of it :D

Sev4162d ago

Well, at least you can say it's well-written even if you disagree.

Outside of the large-scale feel, which I note as a huge positive, it feels like a standard shooter. Character progression? The certificates feel much more like a standard shooter feature than something you'd seen in an MMO.

Bimkoblerutso4162d ago

It's just that the game seems to suffer from the same problems as the first game (all bugs and glitches aside).

Sure the world is big, but given that the game is an absolute bore if you're not in the thick of an epic battle, there seems to be very little reason to make the environment as big as it is in the first place. Exploration is pointless, the story is non-existent, and the character progression is no more elaborate than any other shooter out there nowadays.

In other words, there's no reason not to just jump into the nearest skirmish and simply skip the other 99% of expanse created for the game. So in the end, it never really feels all that much larger or different than, say, a game of Battlefield or Tribes.

Just about what I expected from a free-to-play MMO.

ginsunuva4161d ago

Except not really. You haven't played it, have you?
It's phenomenal and nothing like what you'd expect from a f2p mmo.

alexcosborn4162d ago

Can't argue with free. Just wish I had a PC that could run it

I think it's insane what you get for free in this game. I wouldn't mind paying. Actually, I'd rather pay and have all start on equal footing, but oh well.

Bolts4162d ago

This review is garbage with idiotic questions like "Where is the MMO roots?" This isn't WoW with guns. Clearly the reviewer was expecting something along those lines but instead found the MMO version of Battlefield 3, which is what this game is.

They sold the entire company. I did like when they ran Everquest as well. But numbers were declining unfortunately

Watch it turn out to be Amazon in disguise

Was such a cool concept back in the day - shame that it never really took off like it probably could have with more support
