PS All-Stars is ‘gateway’ to hardcore fighting games, says Killian

PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale may have only debuted in the UK Charts at 38th today, but Sony Santa Monica’s lead game designer Seth Killian hopes that the brawler will introduce many gamers to the fighting genre, and lead them to hardcore titles such as Street Fighter or Marvel Vs Capcom. Get the quotes below.

It's been a gateway to all night gaming sessions and its been years since I have done that. PlayStation All-Stars is really fun and addicting

knowyourstuff4166d ago

I played the Beta, it was ok, very arcadey and non-skill required, very difficult to keep track of your character, especially if someone else picks the same one. If this game gets featured alongside Tekken and Street Fighter 4 in gaming leagues with gamers playing for money I'll eat my socks.

AusRogo4166d ago

@knowyourstuff- no skill required? Tried playing on All Star difficulty? Was versing Nariko in the rival match and the match went for ages, was intense. Skill is definatly required.

Chidori4166d ago (Edited 4166d ago )

@knowyourstuff Lol you're gonna get a barrage of disagrees for stating the truth. It really is sad how fanboys are standing behind this game as if it's the perfect fighter. I love my ps3. Iv'e played the respective games of most of the characters in the roster, so I thought it would be a cool game to have yaknow. I even pre-ordered it on PSN. The game is definitely fun, but there are so many negatives that I'm unable to ignore...especially when comparing to Brawl. Brawl was PACKED with content. You could have a blast with both singleplayer and multiplayer. Hundred's and hundred's of hours I put into that game, but I feel like all there really is to do in All Stars is the tournament mode online. I tried 1v1 with a buddy and it totally sucked. Since the only way to get kills are with supers, most characters are designed to take out more than one opponent with a super (whether it be level 1, 2 or 3), so with only one target to hit, 1v1 just wasn't all that fun at all. Nariko is a total ass kicker, but up against Raiden in a 1v1 she's completely useless. I had to pick Kratos to even have a chance at winning...Which sucks. I always found it extremely weird why there was NO 1v1 footage available online prior to release. I understand now though. It just doesn't work well.

I have high expectations for the sequel, but I feel like a game depending on super moves to win could never be taken seriously. I had fun with it for the first day or two, but it's an afterthought at this point when I have Black Ops 2 and the Dark Souls DLC to play.

I'm with ya man! I've stayed up most of the night playing this game. It keeps you determine to get better!

I played seemed pretty lame to me. Not sure of its identity.

Welshy4166d ago

I don't know what demo you played, either it was an entirely different game or your taste is not suited to fighting games because it is an absolute blast.

Feel like a total idiot for even responding to that comment, i generaly don't expect this kind of comment from someone with 5 bubbles -_-

Skate-AK4166d ago

The fact that he said demo should have warned you. It was a BETA.

Gr814166d ago (Edited 4166d ago )

Expect comments like yours when folks have less than 5 bubs..Word of advice, save your bubs.

Pixel: I understand its supposed to be a fighting game right? It felt like a hosh posh of ideas that didn't mesh together quite well. I know anything relating to PS or Sony in general requires a sunny kiss ass kind of notion here, but I just wasn't feeling it.

There's a saying jack of all trades master of nothing, and that's what this game felt like to me at least.

But hey if you or others enjoy it, more power to you.

Chidori4166d ago

Because he's a complete idiot for mistaking a beta for a demo? Is a tomato a fruit or vegetable? The funny thing is, you probably wouldn't even notice the simple mix up if he was praising the game instead. Oh you fanboys.

Knushwood Butt4165d ago

Check out his post history...

XabiDaChosenOne4165d ago

@Chidori Well when it says beta right on the menu screen they yea, he kinda is.
@Arius Dion "I understand its supposed to be a fighting game right? It felt like a hosh posh of ideas that didn't mesh together quite well." Your vague criticism are really shallow. Just say SSB craps on it and move on, I know you want to.

I don't think you understand the underlying concept of what the game is supposed to be.

Hicken4166d ago

Don't mind him. He's ONLY got negative things to say about all things Sony.

Negative article?

Yep, he's there.

Positive article?

Raining on the parade.

Oh, and please believe he will go into any and every article possible to make sure we all know he thinks it's a boring game(a game he hasn't actually played, mind you).

Gr814166d ago

Hickey? couldn't quite hear you through that PS Move in your mouth muffling your voice.

I give objective opinions on things I see posted here on N4G, nothing more nothing less. If you folks are enjoying the game more power to you! I hope you guys enjoy whatever console you game on.

I just can't stand the hypocrisy of some folks here..Sometimes yourself included. However, always a pleasure seeing you!

LiViNgLeGaCY4165d ago

@Arius Dion

Nothing is wrong with having different opinions. And I truly acknowledge and respect yours.

...It's just that, if there's an article on a game I found lame, and/or didn't care about. I generally don't go into those articles.

Anyway, I'm loving the heck out of this game, and I'm sorry to hear you didn't enjoy it so much. Hopefully when/if they make a sequel, they'll address any issues you have with this game. :D Happy gaming!

Davoh4166d ago

I'm from the UK and have yet to see a single advert for this game on TV.

lodossrage4166d ago

On a chart that is literally basing the game off 1 day of sales. Not even counting the sales of the digital version at that.

Davoh4165d ago

Even if the chart is just based on 1 day of sales, the fact remains that there hasn't been any adverts for this game. If I didn't regularly check gaming related websites I could have easily missed the release of this game.
There have been more adverts this week for Borderlands 2 than for PSASBR, and Borderlands 2 was released in September.

lodossrage4165d ago

Advertising or not, it is what it is. And what it is, is one day of sales (which isn't even complete because of lack of digital sales accounted for) being used to paint the game in a negative light.

League_of_Draven4166d ago

More like a gateway to avoid them. Western devs don't make good fighting games (aside from maybe a few Mortal Kombat games) and Playstation All-Stars shows it. Sony should've let SCEJ make a game like this instead of they didn't want it to flop.

SamPao4165d ago

Do you have anything else to do than troll? I mean seriously if I dont like something and I dont care about it beeing successfull and I have nothing constructive to say about it, I JUST DONT DO IT
I keep out of those articles and shut up, because I dont CARE
You obviously care too much, you should think about it WHY you even do that

Flipgeneral4166d ago

Way to go Seth! You need to keep reppin' those fighting games brotha!

It wouldn't have mattered, Sony would've rushed it out and left it to die. More so now than before with their focus now being on SP narrative driven AAA games.

CrimsonWing69519d ago

Oh, but somehow Smash Bros. 64 made it work?

It just couldn’t compete with Smash Bros. and it wasn’t a free-to-play game like Multiversus.

PapaBop519d ago

I think it released at the right time. It's just after the success of Smash and Multiversus, it's finally time for a sequel.

spoonard519d ago

I'd be all in on a remake or remaster of the original. I enjoyed it because I didn't sit there and compare every aspect to SSB. I just enjoyed it as it was.

Magatsuhi519d ago

Sony should make part 2 and dump a good amount of money on it. Scrap super only kills and it's bound to succeed.

Father__Merrin519d ago

Yes the power kills spoilt it completely WTH was they thinking you should have hp bar that's it

God of War: Ragnarok Weirdly Makes PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale Canon

God of War: Ragnarok has plenty of fun references to PlayStation history, but now fans have discovered a conversation that calls back to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale — the crossover fighting game released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.

Nyxus526d ago

I wouldn't say canon. More like an easter egg.

Deathdeliverer525d ago

That’s interesting. It actually does make it canon lol. He mentioned it in a mainline game. I’d say that’s pretty cool.
