Comparing PlayStation All-Stars and Super Smash Bros.

IGN - IGN PlayStation and IGN Nintendo get together to compare and contrast the two brawlers. And their conclusion may surprise you.

NastyLeftHook04164d ago

why not have both?

mario is awesome and so is kratos!

Ben_Grimm4164d ago

There can only be one!

- Highlander 1986

showtimefolks4164d ago

Why not enjoy oth since both are exclusives to their respective consoles so both will have different characters from 1st party and different play style

PASBR is more of a fighting game where SSB is more of a get together party game. But are worth owning and enjoying

So everyone needs to stop freaking out about rip off this and rip off that and enjoy the game. Games like SSB existed before they Nintendo made me so stop acting like they were the first ones to do it

Sammy1124164d ago

Nice try bud your Sony fanboyism is shown here even if you try to cover it up. Ssb and pasbr are both fighting games don't try and baby Ssb by calling it a together game. I've played both if anything brawl is the much more depth fighting game. And games like Ssb existed before Nintendo? I please tell me about another game where you knock opponents off the screen?

http://www.giantbomb.com/po...

came before SSB there you go

you sound more of a butt hurt nintendo fanboy than anything else. go read ign's review it even says that PASBR is more of a fighting game where SSB is more of a beat em up style game

while PlayStation All-Stars is clearly inspired by what Nintendo has done with its famous brawler, the comparisons end on the periphery. Smash Bros. is its own thing, its own unique take on heavily competitive, fun and accessible multiplayer madness. It totes a well-earned legacy because it’s a phenomenal series.

PlayStation All-Stars, on the other hand, is a bona fide fighting game, and its maiden foray on both PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita attempts to carve out its own, more technical niche. The game’s developer, SuperBot Entertainment, was specifically created to make this game, and the team – with some help from Sony Santa Monica -- succeeded in making a fun mash-up catered to the legions of PlayStation fans out there

maybe next time do some research before opening your mouth

Sammy1124164d ago

Very nice man I love being proven wrong, it teaches you something new. although I will say you are really stretching hard if you're going to compare Poy Poy to brawl. Also a fighting game is something like street fighter PASBR is more like brawl then it is street fighter. I'm ok with you saying brawl is a bet Em up game. I but that's not what you said you said it was a together party game. Brawl is a much more in depth fighter then PASBR. So by your words PASBR is a party together game because if you honestly thing that PASBR is more like street fighter then it is brawl then I'm going to have to call you delusional.

Brawl may appeal to everyone but go look at the tournaments. Tell me that the amount of technical skill they show in that game is something an average pick up and player party gamer can do.

Knight_Crawler4164d ago

They were not asking which one you should buy, they were just comparing them becuse they are almost identicle.

Smash Bros wins for me.

Also am I the only one who wishes Sony had made a serius fighter? something like Mortal Combat, Street Fight or Blaze Blu.

I understand the need to cater to the casuals and little kiddies but I though this was a Playstation fan tribute and all PS1 and PS2 are now passed the legal limit to drink :) so bring on the bloody violence and hardcore graphics.

nolifeking4164d ago (Edited 4164d ago )

I hate democratic responeses so much. Why can't someone like one thing more than the other. Everything isn't great.

considering its play stations first attempt. It's really good

NBT914164d ago (Edited 4164d ago )

Yeah, I think that a lot of the points discussed in the IGN video were interesting and I agree with the overall conclusion. The point that Smash has a more recognisable cast thanks to things like Pokemon and Mario which are like so recognisable that people who do not even play games know who they are but that can not be said for Parappa or really any of the PSAS cast.

I think the best thing they could do with it, is just advertise, let people know it exists and then get right to work on a sequel that takes the idea and does what Meleee did for the Smash series. I.E if it is going to be a proper fighting game with PS cast, make it so, with more combos, emphasis on defence and countering etc... Focus on the combat more than the arenas and weapons.
But if it is gong to be an OTT fun pick up and play game like Smash, then make it so because the reviews seem to indicate it is kind of a mix of both at the moment which some people are finding a bit weird.

Servbot414164d ago

When you literally copy almost everything your competitor has been doing for years, right down to the menu designs, its really hard to screw up.

eferreira4163d ago

Play the game and you'll see it's very different. This game requires strategy. Plus the online is flawless.

AWBrawler4163d ago

Lol you think SSB doesn't require strategy?

TheFirstClassic4163d ago

They require a different kind of strategy then smash bros, they do feel different.

Luke_fon_Fabre4164d ago

I've only played the Beta on my Vita. It seems great, but it just could never be as good as Brawl.

J86blum4164d ago

...is like comparing granny smith apples to delicious reds. both are good, everyone has their preference.

DigitalRaptor4164d ago (Edited 4164d ago )

This is what I mean.

You don't have to compare them, but if you do, you don't need to pick a side. Good job IGN in giving merit where it's due.

Don't care what anyone says, Smash isn't a traditional fighting game. May as well call Powerstone and Playstation All Stars fighting games. They're more of an arena fighter /party game.

NotoriousWhiz331d ago

You don't have to care what anyone says. It's not a traditional fighting game. But it is a fighting game.

Not according to the creator, Sakurai. Link below

I mean what makes them an arena fighter than say something like Tekken? Because there’s platforms?

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21331d ago

because theres a bunch of pokeballs and other random stupid stuff on stage that you can use at your advantage and flying ultra super power ball that you got to chase on the stage to get your ougi LMAO.

CrimsonWing69331d ago

@NatsuXTheMaxspeed21

I mean what it sounds like is they took a fighting game and “added” unique mechanics to it to me.

When I think arena game I think of things like Spawn: In the Demon’s Hand or Virtual-On.

Smash to me is a fighting game, they have fighting game tournaments for it. It just doesn’t jive with me to call it “not a fighting game” because you have poke-balls and platforms or because it has 4 players at once duking it out.

Power Stone I’d consider a fighting game as well. Hell, if you google what it is everyone calls these games “fighting games”. So yea, they’re fighting games…

Immagaiden331d ago

What’s next, you gonna say Mario Kart isn’t a racing game?

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21331d ago

oh its a racer but its not a realistic one like GT or Forza. only kids check for mario kart and smash .

Immagaiden331d ago

I didn’t say it was realistic. I said racing game. Does Burnout not being realistic make it not a racing game?

What does a demographic have to do with a genre? Do kids playing CoD make it any less an FPS? You see how ridiculous bringing up that subject is?

repsahj330d ago

"Only kids and kids at heart check for mario kart and smash".

-fixed!

FallenAngel1984331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Nobody said it was a traditional fighter. Everyone acknowledges it as a platform fighter

PSASBR & Power Stone are fighting games, the former being a platform fighter and the latter an arena fighter

gleepot330d ago

You're correct, it isn't traditional. It's a fighting game though.

repsahj330d ago

Because if cute and lovable characters are fighting it's not a fighting game? XD As long there's a versus fighting, it is a fighting game.

MrNinosan331d ago

Including Smash Bros in a list of fighting games, is like including GTA in Racing games.

NotoriousWhiz331d ago

I hate to break it to you but smash bros has fighting game tournaments so it qualifies.

MrNinosan331d ago

"and here's how it competes against other fighters"

No, Mortal Kombat doesn't compete with games like Smash Bros? It's a different genre for a different audience.

NatsuXTheMaxspeed21331d ago

Anybody can host a tournament in their garage it doesnt mean it qualifies.

NotoriousWhiz331d ago

I'm going to assume you're not part of the FGC. However, I am, and I can tell you that there is a ton of overlap between people who play smash competitively and those who play other fighting games competitively.

Now for casuals, there is a lot less overlap between the two for sure.

PapaBop331d ago

While technically true, Leffen comes to mind, FGC and Smash community have always had a rocky relationship.

Thundercat77331d ago

And yet, If Smash Bros was over 80 million, you wouldn't be complaining. On the contrary, you would be bragging about it.

Immagaiden331d ago

Bad comparison. You do a LOT of things in GTA outside of a car while fighting is what you’re mainly doing in SSB

Ezio2048331d ago

Given the volume of games released, I would say Tekken has sold the best.

lodossrage331d ago (Edited 331d ago )

Yeah, that's a good point. Most of these games have parts to the franchise outside of traditional fighting games.

Like for example, with Mortal Kombat, do Special Forces, Mythologies: Sub: zero, and the Kollection count?

With Tekken does death by degrees or the tag tournament games count?

With Street Fighter, are we counting all the iterations of 2, 3, and 4? how about the ex series or alpha series?

There are a lot of variables at play here

Ezio2048331d ago

Even after including Tekken Tag, they have less titles compared to all MK and SF games.

CS7330d ago

Yeah, i realized that too. Very interesting.

It wouldn't have mattered, Sony would've rushed it out and left it to die. More so now than before with their focus now being on SP narrative driven AAA games.

CrimsonWing69511d ago

Oh, but somehow Smash Bros. 64 made it work?

It just couldn’t compete with Smash Bros. and it wasn’t a free-to-play game like Multiversus.

PapaBop511d ago

I think it released at the right time. It's just after the success of Smash and Multiversus, it's finally time for a sequel.

spoonard511d ago

I'd be all in on a remake or remaster of the original. I enjoyed it because I didn't sit there and compare every aspect to SSB. I just enjoyed it as it was.

Magatsuhi511d ago

Sony should make part 2 and dump a good amount of money on it. Scrap super only kills and it's bound to succeed.

Father__Merrin511d ago

Yes the power kills spoilt it completely WTH was they thinking you should have hp bar that's it
