Black Ops 2 review: The most unique 'Call of Duty' yet | DigitalSpy

It's a pleasure to see a franchise that's often derided for being linear and stuck in its ways attempt to evolve and change, suggesting that Call of Duty's lofty place at the top isn't being taken for granted.

Picking this up tomorrow, can't wait, hopefully it's better than MW3.

SantistaUSA4169d ago

I've got it on release date, and I'm enjoying it quite of bit, I do not care for single player so not sure if it is good or not, but the multiplayer is way better than MW3, maps are awesome. The thing that I don't like is the menu to choose your weapons and perks, is quite different from MW3 and it takes a while to get used to it.

Pintheshadows4169d ago

As a mainly singleplayer man I can tell you the campaign is excellent, explosive, violent and varied. It puts MW3's sterile campaign to shame.

The story is a little uneven but we're not talking MW2 levels of stupidity and the characters are actually developed past facial hair.

I was a) surprised at how much I enjoyed it and b) impressed with Treyarch.

They could of just phoned this in but instead they kept what CoD is all about at its core and came up with enough fresh and interesting ideas for it t be the best CoD campaign since 4 as far as i'm concerned.

And that's the most you'll see me praise CoD ever.

MrAnderson4169d ago

everything's better than mw3, I hated that game so much, i'll never buy another activision cod again after that atrocity, but yeah, black ops 2 is alot of fun.

Jobesy4169d ago

They're ALL Activision COD games, I think you mean IW COD games.

WeskerChildReborned4169d ago

I actually agree with you, MW3 imo was horrible due to lack of barely any innovation, Black Ops 2 on the other hand, looks to atleast try and that's why i like Treyarch more than IW right now,

I have a feeling though that Zampella and West leaving might have impacted the development of MW3.

@WeskerChildReborned
Much better than MW3, that was the worst game i've ever played.. i'm done with the MW series and from now only gonna get treyarc versions

AllroundGamer4169d ago

it's definitely unique in multiplayer when it comes to "lag compensation"... most the time it's unplayable thx to it :/

MysticStrummer4169d ago

There's lag compensation? I never would have guessed that.

AllroundGamer4169d ago

yeah if you getting your a$$kicked too much, just watch the killcam, the enemy is seeing you 1-2 seconds before you can even see him... it's Treyarchs way to say, that people with $hitty internet connection should have at least such advantage... so much fail :/

Summons754169d ago

Call of duty and unique can never be in the same sentence and make sense. It's the same call of duty with a different subtitle, there is nothing new or innovative.

brettyd4169d ago

Oh so you've played it right? BO2 is a big improvement over the past 2 games.

Summons754169d ago

not really.....it's the same thing

oh wait!!! kill streaks got changed to Point Steaks....IT'S A REVOLUTION EVERYONE, FIRST GAME EVER TO DO THIS!!!!!

Soldierone4169d ago

Simplest question there is, have you played the game? Yes or no question, don't say anything else. Just yes. or. no.

creized14169d ago

It would be unique if it didn't have lag or freezes...
Treyarc has done a really good job with the game in my opinion and has added a lot of good stuff in the game and fixed a lot of things that needed fixing.
However the most important thing they haven't fixed is Lag...
Fix the Lag and when someone asks in 5 years or so which is the best COD game you ever played, the answer will be (for me atleast) COD4 and BO2 (Yes it belongs with COD4 if they fix the lag issue completely (my opinion)

bunfighterii4169d ago

I am still waiting for a patch to fix this game's problems before I buy it. I hated BLOPS because of its frame rate, lag and hit detection issues, it just Became an eternal frustration. Looks like Treyarch didn't bother fixing these things.

Xbox $70 billion bet paid out

fr0sty248d ago

Guess that's what happens when there's no good new games to play...

4Sh0w248d ago (Edited 248d ago )

Well regardless of exclusives, or whatever else there is to play on Xbox or ps, CoD has has still been the top selling game on ps platform since forever also.....so no surprise that the most popular game franchise on any console could easily have a revival due to servers coming back online...this is just credit to xbox backwards compatibility & thats good thing for Xbox gamers.

wiz7191248d ago

@Frosty orrrr maybe it’s a breath of fresh air to be able to go back to the peak of the series .. and it’s beem great lol

mkis007248d ago

It's going to take 10 years for xbox to generate that much profit...

Rhythmattic247d ago

Why worry when they have OS, Server and Background Data in their hands...
Gaming is just the small piece, at the top left in a few K piece jigsaw.

EasilyTheBest247d ago

If you buy a house with cash for 1 million dollars you still own the house. Microsoft don't need to make the money back.

Rhythmattic245d ago

But its not money back, its about how it goes missing.

jznrpg248d ago

Shooters is what Xbox people play most of the time and that’s about it by the numbers and sales of games.

shinoff2183248d ago

Atkeast older gamers nostalgia is good. Jeez.

Jin_Sakai248d ago

Mostly because the new CoD games are garbage. The old games were much better.

Rutaprkl247d ago

Agree 100%. Cod 4, WaW, Black ops 1 & 2, those were the days.

Rhythmattic247d ago

For MP, Unreal tournament , QIII Arena (loved the UT mod) FTW!

RaidenBlack247d ago

Unreal Tournament and Quake III were simply amazing ... CoD's and CoD-likes' rise killed the arena shooter popularity ...
Unreal Tournament 2004 is my favorite in the series.
Didn't enjoy Unreal Tournament III, Quake Champions that much.
Too bad Epic cancelled Unreal Tournament 2014 becoz of Fortnite

Rhythmattic247d ago (Edited 247d ago )

I got hooked on the QIII Urban Terror mod (and my work colleagues I introduced them to)... LAN Sessions at the closing of the doors at work, into the night , sinking beers and eating pizza..... Good times.

thesoftware730248d ago

Wow, good games never get old I guess.

CoD will always be a beast of a franchise, and how awesome is it that you can just boot it up or pop it into your Xbox and play, MS BC is really a neat feature.

CrimsonWing69248d ago

Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.

1Victor247d ago

@crimson:” Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.”
I agree it’s worthy at the start of the generation when there’s few new generation games but halfway through the generation it’s not a feature.
Now it’s good that this game is finding a renewed life for its fan but it shows a mayor flaw in new games release when a close decade old game is toppling the charts

CrimsonWing69247d ago

I don't know if I understand what you mean. It's a feature regardless of the time into the generation.

Let's take Armored Core 6 for example. Let's say I'm interested in checking out the previous Armored Core games, sure would be nice if I could play them on my current-gen console.

We're about 3 years into current-gen and old games are hitting in the top 5 for sales charts in the month.

I do get where you're coming from with older games possibly being better than the newer games, but the feature stays the feature. I can only speak for myself, but when there's a lull in game releases or nothing great is out, I like to go back to old titles. It's just nice to not have to have a bunch of consoles out to do so.

I think moving forward it'll be less and less of an issue as like with the PS5 you can access most all of the PS4 games, but I like going back to PS1 and PS2. Would be awesome to kind of make backwards compatibility a prioritized feature moving forward. Hell, Sony was the first to implement it.
