Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 Is One of the Best Told Stories in Videogames

Call of Duty is bad because it takes place in a corridor. Call of Duty is bad because there is little player choice. Call of Duty is bad because people buy it and they should know better. Black Ops 2 is a tired rehash of everything that came before and Activision should be ashamed.

These arguments float around the Internet every year, at about this time, because Call of Duty is an annualized franchise and this is also bad. Like social games, Call of Duty became very popular and so it became accepted knowledge that this was because it is terrible. I see where those arguments come from, but I just can’t get behind them – nearly every year, Call of Duty proves that it’s one of the only franchises that knows how to tell a tight, effective story on the level of more established media.

Yeah sure it is........Hilarious

Uncharted 2 is a example of a well told story with well developed charcters and gameplay. Black Ops 2 or COD in general is like the opposite of that

hennessey864172d ago

Even played it, the story is brilliantly told and acted, go troll some where else

rajman4172d ago

Yeh I'll admit the single player campaign was pretty good, short...but that was obvious from the start. I found it more fun than other FPS single player campaigns such as MOH: Warfighter and BF3.

Jinkies4172d ago

So pointing out that a games story is never good is trolling....

I understand if you had a ton of bubbles and were a well known, mature memeber of the site but a one bubble troll like yourself.....comment ignored.

PhantomT14124171d ago

Actually, I think the other way around : BO2 has an intersting story but the narrative is messy and confusing.

But I liked some things they did with narrative and level designing (even though I found the later quite messy overall).
At one point during a mission, you had a tower you could climb (or not) using a ladder. When you did that, Mason (your character) said "I'll cover you from the tower". It gave a feeling similar to the Stanley Parable mod of Half-Life 2. It's good they've come up with other things than big straight corridors in terms of level design to enhance the narrative (even though they still use that a lot).

waljaber4171d ago

r u serious ? how old r u?

MysticStrummer4171d ago

There's nothing brilliant about the story, the storytelling, or the acting. You must have really low standards in those departments to make that comment. The gameplay is Call of Duty, love it or hate it, but the story is nothing special at all. It's yet another game that makes Michael Bay movies look deep and meaningful.

Winter47th4171d ago

It's a fucking awesome story and I swear to GOD you negative pricks will say that COD is more of the same even if it was a Japanese medieval RTS.

Mykky4170d ago

I have not ever played a CoD game, but you can't mean it's on the same level as Heavy Rain, Kingdom Hearts, Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption? If it is then I'm buying it instantly.

It might be true what hennessey said he is uncharted fan so would make senae to be honest haters gonna hate broh cod is good

MikeMyers4171d ago (Edited 4171d ago )

Jinkies, you never even detailed as to why it wasn't a good story. So who's the actual troll, one making a generalization towards all Call of Duty games and not explaining why the story is so bad for Black Ops 2 while talking about Uncharted 2 instead, or someone who's asking if you've even played it and having you not answer?

Now that truly is hilarious.

MysticStrummer4171d ago

It's a good story if you think Michael Bay movies are thought provoking, I guess.

Norrison4171d ago (Edited 4171d ago )

Sully is underdeveloped in UC2. That's my only complaint with it, half life got a better story tho

iNMyFiN4LH0uR4171d ago (Edited 4171d ago )

BS, Uncharted 2 isn't by any means known for its story; in fact the plot of U2 was very generic, full of cliches that simply held together well for a video game. Where the game excelled was presenting that story in a cinematic format which rivaled a hollywood movie (i mean besides its awesome scripted events).

In contrast, when it comes to story, Black Ops 2 blows it out of the water, afterall the story is penned by the co-writer of the Dark Knight Trilogy. COD has always had a negative connotation for its rehashed game engine and lack of innovation and in the process its well done campaigns have been overlooked far too often. Black Ops 2 is an awesome game from every aspect minus the bugs that plague its online component at the moment. Credit is due to Treyarch.

Breadcrab4171d ago (Edited 4171d ago )

Uncharted 2 is nothing more than a cliched and shallow action story with lazily written 'Joss Whedon' style characters, all of which is meant to create an excuse to string the set pieces together.

deletingthis346753344171d ago (Edited 4171d ago )

Haha no it isn't. Uncharted 2's story is very generic, and it is virtually identical to the first game with a 'supernatural' twist which was ridiculous. The only thing good about it was the made for TV movie quality production values and sadly that wasn't enough to fix the unoriginal story told by Uncharted 2. Sorry, but I have seen WAAAAY better and way more original stories in video games than Uncharted 2. Perhaps you started gaming on a PS3.

I was sick to death of COD, but took a chance after taking a break from it and am surprised by how good this is. The presentation has never been better, new pacing from going to the past and back to the future is extremely well done, some of the near-future weaponry is amazing and the smooth 60 FPS gameplay is a pleasure to play.

Again, I was as sick of COD as anyone, but I can't lie and say this is a bad game... because it's not. One of the best told stories? LOL, I would not say that, but it's a great game, all the same.

Tonester9254171d ago

Why do COD haters click on these articles?

ape0074171d ago (Edited 4171d ago )

to express their anger and frustration of CoD becoming once again the top game in sales and not their beloved franchise, simple.......lol

GUYwhoPLAYSvideoGAME4171d ago (Edited 4171d ago )

im usually a cod hater, but you have to be open minded, this might be the first cod i play since modern warfare 2

i've been watching some videos online and this isn't the usual cod, the story is actually pretty great

ape0074171d ago

im a huge huge CoD fan and my fav CoD games ever are the original IW games, CoD 2( on its time), CoD 4 and MW2, i bought black ops2 and let me tell that it's the best CoD game since MW2, it feels like an upgrade

Xbox $70 billion bet paid out

fr0sty249d ago

Guess that's what happens when there's no good new games to play...

4Sh0w249d ago (Edited 249d ago )

Well regardless of exclusives, or whatever else there is to play on Xbox or ps, CoD has has still been the top selling game on ps platform since forever also.....so no surprise that the most popular game franchise on any console could easily have a revival due to servers coming back online...this is just credit to xbox backwards compatibility & thats good thing for Xbox gamers.

wiz7191249d ago

@Frosty orrrr maybe it’s a breath of fresh air to be able to go back to the peak of the series .. and it’s beem great lol

mkis007249d ago

It's going to take 10 years for xbox to generate that much profit...

Rhythmattic248d ago

Why worry when they have OS, Server and Background Data in their hands...
Gaming is just the small piece, at the top left in a few K piece jigsaw.

EasilyTheBest248d ago

If you buy a house with cash for 1 million dollars you still own the house. Microsoft don't need to make the money back.

Rhythmattic246d ago

But its not money back, its about how it goes missing.

jznrpg249d ago

Shooters is what Xbox people play most of the time and that’s about it by the numbers and sales of games.

shinoff2183249d ago

Atkeast older gamers nostalgia is good. Jeez.

Jin_Sakai249d ago

Mostly because the new CoD games are garbage. The old games were much better.

Rutaprkl248d ago

Agree 100%. Cod 4, WaW, Black ops 1 & 2, those were the days.

Rhythmattic248d ago

For MP, Unreal tournament , QIII Arena (loved the UT mod) FTW!

RaidenBlack248d ago

Unreal Tournament and Quake III were simply amazing ... CoD's and CoD-likes' rise killed the arena shooter popularity ...
Unreal Tournament 2004 is my favorite in the series.
Didn't enjoy Unreal Tournament III, Quake Champions that much.
Too bad Epic cancelled Unreal Tournament 2014 becoz of Fortnite

Rhythmattic248d ago (Edited 248d ago )

I got hooked on the QIII Urban Terror mod (and my work colleagues I introduced them to)... LAN Sessions at the closing of the doors at work, into the night , sinking beers and eating pizza..... Good times.

thesoftware730249d ago

Wow, good games never get old I guess.

CoD will always be a beast of a franchise, and how awesome is it that you can just boot it up or pop it into your Xbox and play, MS BC is really a neat feature.

CrimsonWing69249d ago

Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.

1Victor248d ago

@crimson:” Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.”
I agree it’s worthy at the start of the generation when there’s few new generation games but halfway through the generation it’s not a feature.
Now it’s good that this game is finding a renewed life for its fan but it shows a mayor flaw in new games release when a close decade old game is toppling the charts

CrimsonWing69248d ago

I don't know if I understand what you mean. It's a feature regardless of the time into the generation.

Let's take Armored Core 6 for example. Let's say I'm interested in checking out the previous Armored Core games, sure would be nice if I could play them on my current-gen console.

We're about 3 years into current-gen and old games are hitting in the top 5 for sales charts in the month.

I do get where you're coming from with older games possibly being better than the newer games, but the feature stays the feature. I can only speak for myself, but when there's a lull in game releases or nothing great is out, I like to go back to old titles. It's just nice to not have to have a bunch of consoles out to do so.

I think moving forward it'll be less and less of an issue as like with the PS5 you can access most all of the PS4 games, but I like going back to PS1 and PS2. Would be awesome to kind of make backwards compatibility a prioritized feature moving forward. Hell, Sony was the first to implement it.
