Nintendo TVii was one of the smartest moves Nintendo could make. It makes the usage of the system very high. Let me know if you agree or not I'd like to hear your opinions on this subject.

TripC504175d ago

Heck ya it was a good move. It makes the WiiU gamepad the go to controller whenever the tv is in use, be it watching TV,Netflix,or playing a game. With TVii added on it makes the WiiU the ultimate home entertainment system.. It's a shame they didn't add the ability to play DVD movies on the Wii U as well. But I guess that would have made the price too high.

Instigator4175d ago

I think the Wii U has potential to be the most used console, not only because of the games, but also the features. It depends on what MS and Sony is cooking for their next gen systems, though.

We don't know anything about them, but if they aim to be the center of your living room the same way as the Wii U with an equally streamlined interface then it could go either way. If they just add more power on top of what they did this generation then you may have a point.

"Also does anyone agree with my end statement about the gamepad not being sole as a single at launch."

I think Nintendo confirmed that it won't be sold seperately in the beginning. The fact that there's no support for two Gamepads at launch is probably one reason, I believe it may be because of some of the confusion still surrounding it.

There will be people walking into a store thinking they can use the Gamepad on the Wii, and proceed to buy it along with a few games and take it home. By only selling it with the console at launch will send a message to these people that they will need the system to use it, and avoid the backlash accompanied by any hypothetical scenario you can imagine.

BenRage34175d ago

I get what you're trying to say and I think you make a pretty good argument. But maybe you can help clarify something for me. I get what you mean about Wii U being the most used system of next gen, but I don't understand how it could possibly be used the most this gen. This gen has one maybe two years left in it. The 360/ps3 consoles are in 70 million homes apiece, probably more in the next few years. So how could Wii U possibly match those numbers in that limited time frame? In other words, there simply won't be enough Wii U's in living rooms to be the most used in this current gen.

It doesn't work for Comcast users. That's like 90% of AMERICA!!!

Lol, you're seriously doubting Sony and Microsoft. Mark my words, once sony and ms reveal their new console. People are going to forget about the WiiU until a new zelda game comes out.

@ Bible

I don't think it smart because im pretty sure sony and MS are working on a similar idea to put into their consoles. Like i said don't underestimate sony and definitely not MS. They did alot for the gaming industry this gen alone.

BLACKBIBLE4175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

I do not doubt them at all. Still its funny Nintendo is starting to look like the trendsetter. Mark my words soon you'll see a Playstation and Xbox tablet. Heck sony is already there with Wikipad and PSvita.

Once again I do not doubt Sony or MS. But if you look at what the Wii has done, it seems Nintendo has found a formula for keeping themselves in 1st place.

Lets be honest a lot of you didn't believe Nintendo would make anything for the Next Gen that would matter and to our surprise they did.

Nintendo has create a console that is a "Monster of Convenience." That's the key, people want what's Convenience, above anything else these days.

Also does anyone agree with my end statement about the gamepad not being sole as a single at launch. Right now there is no need to buy a second game Pad. Due to the fact that it's not necessary.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney4175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

Nintendo always make innovative hardware. Games? not so much. Mark my words 99 mario games before next gen is finished.

GuyManDude4175d ago

"Mark my words soon you'll see a Playstation and Xbox tablet. Heck sony is already there with Wikipad and PSvita."

The PSV isn't a tablet. It's the logical next step from the PSP. Bigger screen, a second analogue stick, touch screen, and track pad. With the exception of the track pad, it's what everyone assumed they would do, not a response to what Nintendo has done.

"Also does anyone agree with my end statement about the gamepad not being sole as a single at launch."

It would be nice if they would let us know how much a replacement will cost down the road. If a year from now someone's child breaks the controller and a new one ends up costing $150 (just a hypothetical) I'd be pretty upset.

4175d ago
LOGICWINS4175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

Mika, he's not underestimating Sony/MS. He's simply using the common sense that there are a CRAPLOAD of casual gamers that scoop up anything the mainstream media throws at them. I've seen more Wii U commercials in the past two weeks than I have PS3 commercials in the whole year.

We live in a heavily marketing driven society where consumers don't buy the best products, they buy what they PERCEIVE are the best products.

Nintendo is brilliant in making people perceive that their products are the pinnacle of modern gaming.

iamnsuperman4175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

It strange because here in the UK its the other way round. I have seen an unusal amount of PS3/PS3 sponsored adverts and hardly any Wii U advert (bad advert. More informative than the USA one but the commentator is annoying on the UK one)

LOGICWINS4175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

I always hear the U.K. is EXTREMELY Sony oriented. PS3 exclusives tend to sell better in Europe, thus why they almost always get the better special/collector's editions.

iamnsuperman4175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

The UK is actually very 360 orientated (similar to the USA). Sony have been gaining more but it isn't like the rest of Europe which is very Sony orientated. Of course the Wii (not Nintendo as a whole) is in the background but they tended to advertise well for it

As far as I have seen for Wii U adverts one aired after Homeland and apart from that and one other time that is it really

LOGICWINS4175d ago

Wii U adverts after Homeland? WOW, things really are different across the pond lol. In the U.S, Homeland runs on Showtime and the only adverts on Showtime are promotions for Showtime shows.

iamnsuperman4175d ago

Ha really. Its Channel 4 here though so its adverts galore. Seriously their on demand service (4od) requires 6 adverts to start the damn show with at least a break in the middle with another 3-6 adverts (which you can't skip because the player stops working on certain ad blockers). We have the BBC who do that but we have to pay for (can't watch TV legally without it) that so there shouldn't be adverts on that channel

Jobesy4175d ago

I'm not sure how "mainstream" the Wiiu will be. Here's 2 examples: First, I saw on the news this morning they had an analyst showing the must-have video game related products. He showed Book of Spells, Halo 4, the Vita bundles and BO2. No mention of the Wiiu whatsoever. Example 2, I went to Walmart yesterday afternoon and went to the game section to check the Wiiu out. To my surprise, not a single person was at the Wiiu kiosk, while all other kiosks were being used.

Casuals are finicky as hell, hate to break it to people but they jumped off the console gaming bandwagon with the Guitar Hero/Rockband and Wii. They're not gaming anymore on consoles, now its tablets and smartphones for them.

tehpees34175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

You mean like when PSP came out and everybody forgot about DS? Oh wait. Oh but PS3 will be sure to destroy 360 and the gimmick that was the Wii. Ok that didn't happen but Vita is sure to make 3DS completely irrelevant. Sure Monster Hunter is on 3DS but it isn't that big of a deal.

People say this all the time. The exact opposite has happened every time.

Rumor4175d ago

Sadly I cannot disagree with this

PopRocks3594175d ago

I think it's perfectly fine that there are people out there who like Sony and Microsoft a lot more than they like Nintendo.

But when Mika gets this many agrees I feel like throwing up.

twilight_link4175d ago (Edited 4175d ago )

@Mika "I don't think it smart because im pretty sure sony and MS are working on a similar idea to put into their consoles."

"They actually forced MS and Sony to create there own gimmicks to compete."

Actually, Sony didn't release the Move to keep up with the Wii's market. The blueprints for Move were created YEARS before the Wii released. With or without the existence of the Wii, Sony would have given us the Move regardless. To your credit, the Wii MIGHT have made Sony speed up their plans with Move....but the idea of Move was uniquely Sony's.

http://www.computerandvideo...

OmniSlashPT4175d ago

The PS3 and X360 are now at 70 million and the Wii is close to 100 million. Is not that much of a difference if you think about it. And was it Move/Kinect that sold all those PS3s/X360s or were its games? Because the Wii has been lacking good titles and multiplats from like ever. And the Wii U doesnt seem to go the right way (will it be able to handle BF4 for next gen? probably not).

Deku-Johnny4175d ago

Before Kinect and Move the PS3 and 360 had almost half the sales they have now. They tried to follow Nintendo's footprints in appealing to the casual audience and they made a lot more money. The top selling game on 360 is Kinect Adventures. They owe a lot of success this gen to Nintendo taking the risk they did with the Wii.

RFornillos44175d ago

you make it sound like "YEARS" is more than the actual 2 years as mentioned in your link. Wii was released 2006, and your link points to 2004. At E3 2004, Reggie Fils-amie debuts as NOA President, Iwata then introduced the Revolution which eventually lead to the Wii.

however, if you go back to another article, as early as 1999-2001, a certain Tom Quinn pitched his idea of motion controls to Microsoft and Sony but was snubbed. Nintendo liked his pitch, bought shares from Tom Quinn's company and started planning the use of motion controls in gaming. With Microsoft even saying they can do a better job at it, and Sony asking if it can be made for 99 cents.

now, i for one don't think Sony copied motion controls from Nintendo since they are using the Eye Toy for managing it, but you have to admit, if Nintendo's Wii didn't sell because of "motion controls", do you really think Sony will also come out with it. Probably not, because Sony didn't think "motion control" would sell. They had the "Eye Toy" for years, but did they maximize the use of the device before doing Move?

4175d ago
OmniSlashPT4175d ago

I give it until E3, then everyone's Wii U will be gathering dust just like their Wiis.

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple10110d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref9d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde9d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19729d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville9d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21839d ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos9d ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref9d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan9d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0078d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander197210d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Einhander197210d ago

Anyone remember xblig which Microsoft removed their whole 360 indie section removing hundreds of games from people?

10d ago
9d ago
Zeref9d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde9d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19729d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19729d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier9d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto9d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21839d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto9d ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts9d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts8d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic8d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Nintendo's War Against Player-Made Content Will Hurt The Company In The End

Danish from eXputer: "Nintendo has historically gone against player-made content and emulation of its games. This has done much to harm the company's image."

They need to stop announcing these mods and fan remakes until they're finished. Finish it, upload it, and then if Nintendo dmca's it tough shit. Once it's online, people can share it around, even if the original download gets taken down.

Jingsing15d ago

True, but most modders need constant admiration during the process to motivate them.

PRIMORDUS15d ago

Yup, once it's a torrent nothing can be done Nintendo is helpless at that point. But it would be wise if they just had a site on the dark web, it's also easy to use with Tor and no one will bother you.
