Introducing Chronovolt, a steampunk platformer for PS Vita

PlayStation Blog: Hi everyone. David from Playerthree here, to tell you about Chronovolt – our new PS Vita game debuting on the PlayStation Plus service next week. Our aim with Chronovolt was to bring a challenging platform adventure to PS Vita, whilst making use of its unique touch interfaces and gyroscopic controls. From the start, we had a steampunk theme in our heads that could allow us to create worlds and characters with strange machines and futuristic sources of energy. HG Wells’ classic sci-fi novel, The Time Machine, was a definite source of inspiration. A time manipulation concept not only allowed us to jump between very different settings, but was also a perfect fit for the Vita’s touch controls, allowing players to manipulate time with their fingers.

This looks frustrating as all hell lol and I'll probably give it a shot, til I shout bloody murder and throw my vita across the room (hopefully not!)

Tomonobu Itagaki4169d ago

So that's basically Marble Madness. Wasn't really what I would expect from a "steampunk platformer".

-MD-4169d ago

I got excited when I read "Steampunk platformer" but this is not even close to what I was expecting to see.

Meh.

Myst4168d ago

I was going to post pretty much the same comment almost word for word. Saw the characters and thought "Oh yay~! Steampunk AND platformer!" Then my smile flew south and..yeah..

hkgamer4168d ago

This video has me questioning myself alot. Did I completely misunderstand what steampunk was or was it them that doesn't have a clue.

Just seem like the gameplay element was from another game, the title and concept art just doesn't match the gameplay at all.

Not renewing my PlayStation Plus membership if these ridiculous games keep ending up on there. (USA)

Chronovault? Really...?
Some lame MBA title?

That's right. I share the same opinion as pretty much everyone posting in the USA PS Blog...

ftwrthtx4123d ago

The last few additions have been lacking. Hopefully they'll listen to their subscribers and add some more AAA titles in 2013.

The_Klank4123d ago

Then drop your sub until a month with games you like are put up. Its not like you are really losing anything.

I've often done it.

belac094123d ago

if you buy a membership and get some games, and then you dont renew the next month, do you lose the games you got when you had the membership?

The_Klank4123d ago

@belac09
If you haven't played the games to completion then yeah I guess, but for me anyway once I've downloaded a game it doesn't take a month to finish it once I have I don't mind missing them till I resub. No biggie.

BitbyDeath4123d ago

They lock til you resub so you won't actually lose them.

kupomogli4123d ago

@belac09

Like BitbyDeath said. Once you resubscribe, you have access to them again.

Just make sure that you purchase the games when they're free each week. If you miss purchasing them at the end of the month and they're removed on the next PSN update, then you've lost your chance.

More complaints over free shit?!?!?
Beyond my comprehension. Go ahead and cancel... then cancel xbox live while your at it since they charge you for Internet play when they shouldn't since you already pay your Internet provider 14.99+ a month.(also not giving any games at a higher price than ps+.)
I'm sorry but these kind of complaints rub me the wrong way. What so you want a AAA game every week or so? That would make you not buy them, which ultimately would hurt Sony. Take the free games and smile. anything free is good, you would have never bought it, but it free play it for a week or so get some trophies and maybe somethin better will come next week.
Please don't start the ps+ isn't free argument I know it isn't, but the game collection pays for itself ultimately making it free.

Yourworstenemy4123d ago

Free or not free? It can't be both!

doogiebear4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

Yeah but that's exactly the point: it's "free" Sh!t.

And by Sh!t I mean garbage.

And by my using quotes around "free", I mean that it is not free. I paid $50. I never knew in advance if the games i'd be getting would be good or bad. BUT I do know that Europe has been getting AAA titles, while I am getting the Cream of the Crap here in America (with a few exceptions of course).

Last time I checked, I pay the same equivalent for ps plus, that Europeans pay in Euro's.

So get off of your high horse and quit being naive. No one would be complaining if EU wasnt getting the best, and us the worst.

ZigZagZach4122d ago

@Syntax-Error

Funny, because I just recently got an Xbox 360, and when I tried to quickly access Internet Explorer before activating my Live subscription, it said I couldn't. But, you're right it must be different for you alone...

This year, Sony offered $1200 worth of free shit with their subscription service. Yes, $1200. Don't believe me? Do the math. For $50 (cheaper by $10 than Xbox Live, which offers basically nothing in return) yields you free games every week. Every week. Do you think they can just throw off all their Triple A games just like that? I bet in the coming months we'll see Starhawk, Twisted Metal, maybe God of War collection. You cannot honestly expect them to give you a Triple A game every week, they have to disperse them over months. Considering we got one on average every two-three weeks, that's pretty good. Like, really good.

I'm not even going to get in to a comparison between Xbox Live and PS Plus, because the former is really starting to piss me off royally with some serious greediness.

So, in summary, before you go posting on N4G and other sites spewing false and utterly biased opinions on matters which you clearly know absolutely nothing about, do some research.

k thanks

kikizoo4122d ago

Lol@syntax error xfan talking about "ignorant", + sony offering "shovelware" (in reality, more and better games than exclusives on xbox since 4 years : lbp2, batman, infamous, ratchet, darksiders, deadspace2, etc etc etc )

And yes, kingtrash is right, you are paying (xbl) for a free functionality on ps3 (playing online), and you have more dedicated servers on ps3 ! (more p2p on xbl), so your point is ridiculous.

super street fighter 4 arcade, resident evil 5, retro city rampage, little big planet 2, just cause 2, ratchet and clank all for one, uncharted golden abyss, wipeout 2048, and gravity rush are some of the more recent releases in the last couple months, yet to you they're "ridiculous"

please go to xbox and never come back, my god you are cheap and spoiled.

Y_51504123d ago

Well the opinions on the log doesn't seem right to me. Seriously give it one more week. They are switching Chronovolt and Scott Pilgrim for a new free game for PS3 and Vita so keep complaining. Because next week, that my change my friend.

doogiebear4123d ago

How do u know their changing it so soon? I didn't see it say that.

Y_51504123d ago

Go to "Expiring soon" section on PS+. You'll see those games on the list. That means they'll replace those games with a new selection(s) for next week because why would they take games out for no reason? :P

DivineAssault 4122d ago

Dude, why would you even complain? Theyre free for one & two, theres going to be many more that come up for PS3 & Vita as this year progresses.. PS Plus was the greatest online service i ever paid for.. I bet you havent even beat all the free games u have on there right now... I know i havent & theres many on there that i like.. The discounts are great too.. Your like the only person ive ever seen that complained about it.. smh, i dont understand your logic

Not sure which two of the sales I should get. AC2, Just Cause 2, and Shadow of the Colossus.

Inform me, users of N4G.

WeAreLegion4123d ago

AC2 is a good deal.

Just Cause 2 is a great deal because of how fun the game is. If you have a solid PC, I would recommend getting it on Steam for really cheap. Then, download the BOLO Patch from somewhere online. It makes the game ten times more fun.

Shadow of the Colossus will always be a good purchasing decision.

KangarooSam4123d ago (Edited 4123d ago )

I've already played the first AC, AC3, and AC3:L, so is AC2 worth it?

I don't have a gaming PC but I looked up the BOLO patch and that would obviously be more enjoyable. However since it's PS3 will the game still be fun? And would you suggest following the story or dicking around or both? If it's even still worth it.

I know Shadow of the Colossus is supposed to be great but never played it back in the PS2 days. Not sure if it looks too great without the nostalgia factor.

Edit: and thank you!
Would anyone suggest Bulletstorm?

doctorstrange4123d ago

The prob with AC2 is that the combat and controls will seem odd after the more refined AC3. Bulletstorm is pretty fun, but in an unrefined silly way.

WeAreLegion4123d ago

AC2 is still very much worth it. Amazing story!

Yes, Just Cause 2 is worth buying on PS3, as well. It was free for Plus though, so that's how I got it. One of the most addicting things you'll ever play. Both the campaign and running around are very fun!

SotC is definitely worth a try. Even without nostalgia, it is a masterpiece.

Bulletstorm is a fun playthrough, but it's a one-and-done type of deal.

Kingthrash3604123d ago

Kangaroo..
AC2 good buy in fact EASY buy.
Bulletstorm fun fast and silly easy buy too but not the best fps on market... But defiantly not the worst I give it a 7.9 with the sale its almost a must buy.

Shadow of the Colossus is a game everyone should play, although the graphics and gameplay mechanics are obviously a bit dated

FrightfulActions4123d ago

Just wanted to add in my two-cents and vouch for Just Cause 2. It's a really fun game that you will probably never actually beat 100%. It is huge. Like, really huge. I wasn't expecting much from it since I didnt care for the first one, but it really blew me away with just how fun it was.

Its a massive free-roaming game with tons of stuff to do. You can fly planes, parachute, all kinds of stuff. I enjoyed it more than GTA4, personally, far as the fun factor goes. I'm not sure I'd call it a sleeper hit, since I dont know the sales numbers, but I cant help but feel like it hasn't gotten nearly as much attention as it should had.

Very fun game, if you like free roaming massive open world games, it'd be right up your alley.

TheGrimOfDeath4126d ago

Over here in EU we already got the game and I would just like to say that it is not worth buying. If you really think you want this game that bad then just get PS+ since you will get it for free and that is supposed to be the price of the game.

Chronovolt Review (www.ComboCaster.com)

As part of the offer PlayStation Plus for the PlayStation Vita, which premiered over the relatively short time Chronovolt received much coverage in the pre-launch. After the first trailer never left my mind that Chronovolt is an evolution of Kula Word, a super rare classic PlayStation the first that made me lose hours. Unfortunately Chronovolt displays a multitude of problems that make it hard to recommend even for those with PlayStation Plus and you can download for free.
Playing as a heroine named Jessica generic, control metal balls called Chronospheres with the task of ending the corruption of a mad scientist. To do this, you need to gather energy called Chronovolt, navigate levels in a short period of time, and avoid the enemies that will try to block your progress. At least that Chronovolt does well, offering small departures for short play sessions, ideal for portable consoles.
