3DS outsells Vita 46:1 in Japan, nears PS3 lifetime sales

Last week’s official Japanese sales figures are in and once again the Nintendo 3DS has stamped its authority as the number one games system in Japan at the moment. We already knew courtest of Satoru Iwata that Animal Crossing had sold over 600,000 copies but the hardware figures are just as impressive...

3DS is your choice if you just want to play 1st party decades old rehashed IP's. If you want adult games and more new surprising IP's then PSVita is the way to go.

Kid Icarus was far and away the best handheld this year.. I easily sunk 60+ hours into it between single and multiplayer.

Sony alone is not to blame. Lets not forget some of those games are from 3rd party developers ( Crapcom, er Capcom for Monster Hunter, Square Enid for Final Fantasy). There doesn't. Seem to be enough. 3rd party support for the Vita. That and Nintendo first party support is what making 3ds sell.well. Sony is trying but what also Vita is more 3rd party support and GOOD 3rs party games.

The problem is 3rd party developers are not getting games for Vita until it sells more, but Vita cannot sell without the games. And cut the price on the Vita as well ( especially.those overpriced memory cards) . Sony is trying despite financial troubles, but they cannot do it alone. More developers need to get behind the PS Vita...

But don't forget Sony is still supporting the PSP in the Land of the Rising Sun. That is why a lot of the 3rd party developers have no incentive to move the games they are developing for the PSP onto the Vita and not all of those games are Vita compatible and if they are (available by PSN) no one knows about it because they are not advertised as such.

Look at what Ninty did with the DS, once the 3DS was released. They stopped supporting the DS. Sony needs to make the same decision. This 10 year life cycle support thing may be showing its drawbacks. The Vita after all is their present and future product and not the PSP.

Just because one item does better in sales does'nt mean its a better product. Imagine in hard economic times everyone goes to the cheaper solution for on the go gaming, however people like me choose to invest the extra into more powerful and overall better equiptment because I value quality over cheap and easy. And honestly nintendo and sony have never really been pointed to the same demographic. Nintendo aims at children tween and the casual gamer. Sony and microsoft aim for older demographics and adults, who generally require more sophisticated hardware to be impressed. So I feel my comparison is pretty valid.

And as to your question: game reviewers review games as they are. Those vita games(the ones that are reviewed poorly) are inferior or smaller packet samples of console games. They are directly modeled after them and not well enough to stand beside them, which is why they receive low scores. The platform has nothing to do with it and shouldn't anyway.

maybe 3DS games are better for mobile gaming just like phone games are. pick up and play games appeal to a wider casual audience than cut down console campaigns. the 3ds is more casual/non-gamer-friendly. the vita is very specialised. i think there is still a market for such a device but just not as big a market.

Ok maybe kill was an overstatement but it would compete.
Also ss4? Mario? Kingdom hearts? These are console game that couldn't stand side by side with its console. Strangely ss4 gotta 8.9 for 3ds on ign but SFxT gets a 6??? Vitas take on porting sf was far beyond 3ds but the scores are far off. At the end of the day they are competing handhelds (I love them both btw) and while 3ds has a head start the vita is more advanced than the system. If they lower the price it will compete no question.

I would have to disagree. While i understand the thought behind your point you seem to miss out on a very important aspect. 3ds has what the vita does not. direct play for bc titles.

while it may not be the intention for someone to buy into a new system to play old games, you cant deny the benefit it offers. Vita and Bc is purely digital and for someone like myself who has a psp and a slew of UMD games, it offers me nothing in that regard.

As someone like me who also has a ds the 3ds can play my library of games just fine. a price cut would certainly spark interest but the overall problem sony is facing is managing multiple platforms at the same time.

If anything, nintendo has the ds and 3ds which the 3ds would likely outpace the ds. We are seeing the 3ds sales increase because it can do what the ds does AND more. We could see a similar trend with the wii-u but that is still to be determined.

So in my view, sony is like sega. Sega had at one time 6 platforms on the market AT THE SAME TIME. That was increasingly difficult to support. Sony right now has 4 which they really should change their focus to the only top 2 that are the ones they want to move forward (PS3 and vita).

They just dont know when enough is enough or more importantly, how to price things like digital psp games to be more disposable to people as an incentive to get the vita. The new ps+ will have some effect on the sales but we still will have the issue of them competing with themselves by continuing to support platforms that are past their prime.

I think Sony believes they can do a PS2-PS3 scenario were the PS2 sold for years after the PS3 was released before dropping off. They should realize that the situation of the PSP-PSV is different. i have both the vita and a 3ds and love them both but honestly "the 3ds having more games" is bs from nintendo fangeeks . only games i have for my 3ds are re:revelations and sm.3ds.land honestly i dont care for anything else its shovelware. same for vita i have gravity rush and need for speed most wanted and many ps1 games and minis. please fangeeks dont make it seem as if the 3ds is sooo much bette than the vita, like i say, i have them both and they are both great. they both have their own great gemes only difference i see is the price. These are Japanese numbers. The library in Japan is incredible with several big name titles. Here? Better than vita, but not that by that much and with few big hits. Those Japanese games are coming however, with even more yet to even be released in Japan.

And while the vita has minis and psp/ps1 games, the 3ds has several vc and eshop exclusives as well. Along with FULL backwards compatibility with all we games.

So yes, the Vita has far fewer games. Wether you like them is a matter of opinion, but that is the truth; the 3Ds has a much larger library

The Vita just launched earlier this year in the states and in Europe. The media just needs to give it some time and quit always saying the Vita is dying. Not to hate on the 3DS, but so far what I see is more of the same as last generation and the generation before that.

Has anyone seen that 3DS commercial that featured that fashion designer and at the end of the commercial, she says her name and that "She's not a gamer, but with her 3DS, she can style all she want". What I'm saying is, so far I'm seeing some shovelware being released on the 3DS as of now and that Nintendo is doing the same tactics as they did for the DS. Sony on the other hand is trying to cater towards the hardcore still, but there are some titles that cater towards the casual gamer, but mostly the "real gamers" are getting in on a treat with the Vita.

Now in Japan, the real reason why the 3DS is outselling the Vita is because of Monster Hunter, Maro, and Pokemon. Once the Vita gets a killer game in Japan like Final Fantasy X remastered in HD and hopefully a Dragon's Quest or Monster Hunter on their own, then maybe there will be a different tide in sales, but until then, the 3DS has what Japan wants to play.

Drop the price, increase the amount of games coming out for the Vita and see what happens. It's not a bad device, but for that kind of money, someone can upgrade their smartphone instead or buy a brand new console of their choice.

IMO the touchscreen and back panel touch pad was unnecessary and could have been left out. That would have shaved the price a bit and would have potentially allowed for more sales...What good is a touch screen when your fingers cover the screen?

I couldn't care in the slightest about sales figures. I really enjoy my Vita and can't see any games that I'd want on the 3DS. Mario bores me, pokemon is the same game it's always been and Zelda isn't my thing. Still have no idea how they get awaywith the same franchises generation after generation. Obviously some love them but it ain't me.

(sorry to break it to u guys, but its true) its kinda like McDonald's, they aint in the buissness of making burgers, their in the buissness of making money. same goes for comics and movies etc. etc. games for developers are only the medium they use to make that money. its called (MARKETING) and theres only two things they (developers) really got to worry about when they're about to (produce) a game. 1st: how much its going to cost them to make that game. and, 2nd: how many units (games) do they need to sell to actually make a profit. THATS REALLY ALL THERE IS. capcom and likewise companies realize that the installbase needed doesnt outweigh the cost it would cost capcom or likewise companies to produce a game, any type of game on vita. its just not worth THE COST. a good example is the new COD GAME ON VITA. if thats the only game activision made, trust me, that woulda been their only game. luckily it doesn't matter how much money they lose on that game cuz they making to much money with the bigger console versions. dont believe me?? just look at disney's decision to not make anymore standalone HULK films. they themselves were the ones who said, that the cost of making the films, is never matched by the people who purchase a ticket to see the films. and ther folks is my point. if all disney cared about was making HULK films that not enough people wanted to watch. then they would keep making them, but because they too are in the buisness of making $$MONEY$$, not films, THEY SADLY stopped making standalone HULK films, and instead signed mark rufallo to only cameos as THE HULK in future marvel films. why?? cause they aint "WORTH" making. peace
