PS3 sales now over 70 Million, Move reaches 15 million, 595 million games sold worldwide

PS3 will pass 100 million easily. I've been saying this for like YEARS. There is no stopping it no matter how much hate people have for Sony. They have soon sold over 100 million consoles 3 gens in a row.

The only thing that is uncertain is that will PS3 pass Wii in it's lifetime sales but even that is beginning to look certain since Wii is really dying down in sales.

Move sold 15 million? That might be a sore spot for many haters.

The price still hasnt hit the sweet spot, which is $199. The 360 has been at the price point for a while now, and the PS3 is still able to keep up. If Sony was at the price, its obvious who would be the market leader. I can see them closing at 100-110 mill, by the time this race is over. Especially with some advertising and exclusive bundles next year.

To be fair, for only $50 more which is less than the price of a retail game you get quite a bit more than the Xbox 360. In almost all measures the PS3 provides far far better value than the Xbox 360, which is surprising how well the Xbox 360 sells.

Point being, I think all the consoles peaked in terms of sales, and from here on out it is a slow and agonizing sales for all of them until a next generation.

What everyone should notice is all 3 systems (PS3, Xbox 360 and the Wii) have done very well this generation. There should be no animosity, no resentment and no arguing. If you prefer one over the other that's fine and quite normal, but this endless attacks really needs to stop. We are near the end of the cycle, so ask yourself, what has all that bickering accomplished? Nothing since all 3 systems sold well.

I think it is quite possible the PS3 will hit 100 million once Sony discontinues the system. At this rate it should take upwards of 3 years or less to reach that milestone. Going by history Sony is likely to keep the PS3 in production for at least a couple of more years even if the PS4 comes out in 2013.

Congratulations to Sony! I am glad PS3 has almost wiped out XBOX360 sales lead. Maybe this announcement will finally silence the doomsayers or maybe they will tout the NA sales to make themselves feel better. LOL! I have been a Playstation owner since 1999 and I am really grateful for all the great games that the platform has given me to enjoy over these 13 or so years. I was 17 when I bought my first Playstation and now I am 30, still loyal to Playstation and an avid gamer. I graduated from university, got a great job, have a lovely wife with kids and a great life. I like to think of myself as an example that gamers are not always losers. Somehow I feel like Playstation had a strong role in shaping me what I am today. I am really looking forward to PS4/Orbis announcement and hope Sony will continue to provide me with great exclusives and superior multi-platform games in the future as well. It's true that as of the end of Sony's FY2012 Q2, the PS3 is at 70.2 million consoles sold, and as of the end of Microsoft's FY2013 Q1, the Xbox 360 is at 70.0 million consoles sold. However, you have to consider that there is a one month time difference there.

Microsoft's FY2013 Q1 ended September 30, 2012.
Sony's FY2012 Q2 ended October 31, 2012.

So with one more month worth of sales reported the PS3 is at 200k more consoles sold worldwide than the Xbox 360.

If you consider release dates of the consoles, that means that the PS3 has sold 70.2 month in about 72 months, or 1.025 million per month. The 360 has sold 70.2 in about 83 months, or about .845 million per month. That approximately 200k per month advantage that the PS3 has over the 360 means that when you include an extra month of sales for the Xbox 360 to get its sales figure as up to date as the PS3's, you're potentially looking at a dead heat right now with both consoles at about 70.2 million worldwide.

All anyone can guess at this point is that the PS3 and Xbox 360 are literally EVEN in sales. Which spells a win for the PS3, considering it has cost more for its entire life, and it came out a year later (nearly a year and a half later in Europe).

I've known this was going to happen for YEARS. If you look at the year-to-year momentum the PS3 had and the Xbox360 had ... you could see the PS3 was always outselling and would end up closing the 1 year head start's gap M$ had.

Congratulations to Sony though...I'm glad they kept to their principles and gave us superior hardware even if it's at a high price point and they were STILL selling at a loss. At least they're giving us quality hardware (and games).

i still use my move controllers occasionally. last new game i got was uninished swan was pretty cool with move. i still play a little killzone 3 here and there with it and will most likely pick up sports champion 2 after the holidays. the move works well with the few titles that support it. now that portal 2 has move controls implemented ill probably pick that up to.

I have 4, personally. My brother has two. I have a friend who has just 1. Most people I know with a PS3 don't have it at all, though. I think 2 Move controllers is just about standard from folks who own any at all, with there being a couple times more people owning just 1 as there are 3 or even 4, which leads to there being still an average of about 2 for everyone who owns any. So 1 in 8 PS3 owners having Move is my best guess.

Look, I don't want to rain on anyone's parade here, but bare in mind that this is usually the 'shipment' period. The difference between the way MS and Sony do business is that MS 'ship' units to retailers and then receive payment for those consoles from the 'sales' to customers, but Sony 'sell' units to the retailers and they receive no payment when those consoles are sold.

Don't bite, just take that into consideration.

One thing IS for certain though: We are looking at second place by May and possibly first place by mid 2015.

Well to be fair, if you're going to count the PSP, then you have to count the Vita, which hasn't gotten anywhere near 70 million yet. It's currently on pace to take between 11 and 12 years to get there (3.0 million in 2 fiscal quarters reported), but that pace is sure to rise after the holiday season... of the two fiscal quarters reported for the Vita so far in its life, it has no holiday quarters to account for yet.

What makes me even happier is that every console did so great this gen a has brought some awesome features and exclusive. I think this huge competition this time around really helped creating better content and an overall better experience. It's not even comparable to last gen with the overdominance of the PS2 and the unfortunate fail of the GameCube (that was fortunate actually because it made Nintendo create the Wii) and the rather unattractive Xbox. I'm happy with this generation of gaming.

So Sonys numbers are from September 30th and Microsofts numbers are from September 30th, so if both numbers are correct Sony did overtake Microsofts 360 sales by 200k units or they officially tied now, and thats impressive imho for a console that was released 1 year later and didnt have as many broken units. Really cool.

Looks like Microsoft will end up being 3rd once the PS4 and Xbox 720 launch.

PS3 will end up being close to Wii numbers or passing Wii numbers when all is said and done.

I think Sony has been consistent every console generation.

I think Nintendo and Microsoft's success this gen shows that they grew their brand.

As for Sony there is not so much room to grow your brand when you are already selling 100+ million consoles each gen.

Congrats to Sony, but those saying they are ahead of MS, Microsoft is currently at 72 million sold according to their reference charts. Anyways, great numbers Sony hopefully next-gen is just as competitive, great for us gamers.

Not really, both numbers are known and are official and come from the companies reports and were released on September 30th. If you go to Microsofts site you'll see the exact number of 70m units sold so far (link below) and those are not rounded numbers. If you go to Sonys website you'll have to do some maths but you'll end up getting 63,9 untis until the end of FY 2011 plus this years Q1 and Q2, 6,3m untis, so combined 70.2m units. And thats's 200k more than Microsoft.

Edit: And of course, they have both sold more untis since September 30th, but you don't really have exact and official figures, that's what the quarter or year reports are for. And you never know for sure whether they are talking about units sold or shipped, but here in the reports they and those numbers are 100% legit and comparable, unlike many other mostly estimated sales numbers.

Clarification for those who are saying this whole month after Microsoft announced 70 million mark. Sony's Q2 is from July-Sept. All companies quarters end at the same time. Microsoft's Q1 is the same as Sony's Q2. PS3 has indeed surpasses Xbox360 in LTD. It's simple addition folks.

As I already said, those are confirmed numbers, wait for the next quarter to see who's ahead then. Anyways, the bottom line is that Sony is nontheless more successfull with their console. The 360 launched on November 22. 2005 and the PS3 on November 11. 2006. If you simply divide the official sales numbers by the years the console is on the market you'll get the number of units sold per year which makes them more comparable, it doesn't represent the actual sales p.a. though. Microsoft sold 10m units p.a. and Sony 11.7m units p.a.. Guess who's first?!

Since next-gen will start next year and with Halo 4 and BO2 just being released along with the Halo 4 console bundle. I don't see Sony catching MS, they are still almost 2 mil consoles behind.

That's when Sony made the announcement.They didn't announce their Q2 results until November 1st. Go do the math yourself. From April-Sept Sony sold 6.3 million PS3.

Is that the bulk of their sales, both hardware and software, happen late into their cycle.

Heck, the online servers for Burnout 3: Takedown were only shut down 2 years ago. PS2 still sells a few thousand units a year.

So all this hoopla about failure this and sales that....you only see the big picture late in the cycle. Even when PS4 drops, PS3 will still sell because there will be a healthy library and a low price.

something in your argument. Do not downplay the fact that Microsoft had the entire current gen market to themselves for an entire year. It also didn't support RROD under warranty the first 9 months of 360s lifecycle. Contrary to your statement, the Playstation brand is only proving how strong it is. To overcome a year head start, high price point, biased media "doom" articles, and PSN hack only show how strong the name is. Like I said before, you can spin this however you want "Carl Rove", numbers don't lie. Microsoft used expensive advertising, Sony used just good ol' word or mouth.

Well at this point the PS2 was on 87 million, and that was with a much lower price tag, calculating the difference in percentages of yearly growth, another 100 million console is definitely on the cards with moves to China and South America which others are not doing.

No matter what this is a great accomplishment for sony. Yes some are shipped but they all include shipped numbers as well. MS and nintendo include shipped units as well as sony and everyone else. It released a year after the 360 and for europe it was 16 months after the 360 and even still it has managed to pull of these number which are almost on par with the 360.

Ofcourse when good news is reported for anything ps3 related it gets bashed on.

and people wonder why there are so many ps3 fanboys? You can't blame them when people have been bashing their platform and the ps3 fanboys for years with constant bashing from the media and gaming world being touted as the next dreamcast.

The 15 million for the Move is incredible. Given that, I'm quite surprised about the minimal support it has received. But then again, I wonder if this is an inflated number. On the surface it makes it look like 15 million people with consoles have the Move, but I have two move controllers and I bet a lot of people are the same. So is it more realistic to think of the 15 million as 7.5 million as compared to the PS3 base? Just something to think about.

Owning a Sony and not an XBOX, I can certainly appreciate these numbers from a fanboy point of view. But I can't help but think that the XBOX has a little more to brag about. In the last generation, Sony ruled all regions across the world. Now, Sony excels in Japan, is very strong in Europe, but has been a relative poor performer in North America. That's a big deal, given the size of this market, and quite an accomplishment by Microsoft.

Frankly, I'm a little fascinated by the XBOX360 in the sense that here is a console that was horrendous in terms of its quality upon release, and yet that had no impact at all on its popularity. Further, it can be argued that this console's success is almost entirely on the backs of a handful of shooter titles (I base this on the fact that 8 of the top 10 selling XBOX games are shooters). I'm not saying there aren't a lot of great games for the system, I'm just saying that seems to be what has given this console a competitive advantage. It's cliche, but you can't help but think of a guy on a couch with a headset, microphone and an XBOX controller in his hand. How did this one genre of games launch XBOX's success in North America?

I don't know, I just find all this very interesting because I just don't have my finger on the pulse of why Microsoft has done so well when all I can focus on is reasons why it shouldn't have done well.

In any event, this is all great for the industry and a fun rivalry.
