Sure, most are bloggers, and many spread a lot of BS rumors or non-news stories, but every once in awhile these smaller sites (blogs) will break a big story, or get confirmation of something, which leads the big sites to follow. It may be few and far between, but they serve a purpose. A blog post really isn't too different than an editorial in a major publication. I just wish all bloggers would take some journalism classes to understand what it means to be responsible.

My launch PS3 died a week ago. I have the opportunity to write about it. But it's a piece of electronics. I bought a new one and that was the end of it. Do you want to hear more stories like this? No? Then frickin' vote Craptaku down.

How does that differs from every other site on here?

People always say PS3 fanboys run this site but it's funny that the biggest PS3 fan that had a site gets banned while kotaku steadily dumps on the PS3 and gets hits and when "bad" PS3 news comes out every no-name site come in and dumps too.

There were sites that got upset when PS3 games got a bad score, but you never saw them headline because they failed as stories time and again, but lo and behold, Halo 4 gets bad scores and the N4G headlines are flooded with how halo getting a bad score was what was wrong with the gaming industry.

I think his love of the PS3 was a part of it, but all of these wannabe bloggers got very upset when he got his own PS3 show and his own skin with the WWE belt in home and wanted him off the site when a big-name site picked him up.

That's also probably why people are saying this site has had a slide in quality as well: people who really care about this site are constantly shoved aside for the whiners and now they are banned from the site, parts of the site, or got tired of being kicked around for no reason.

Kotaku does it and the only people who will complain are experienced gamers that are perceptive.

Sony won't call them out because they think Kotaku counts somehow; but HHG is pretty much fair game in the industry I see. I don't think gametrailers were ever called out although they took a full day or two to respond to one and they didn't even bother after a while.

Kind of reminds me of Bioshock; they rightly got slammed for porting a poor looking PS3 game; in the end FF for the 360 was rated higher than the PS3 game even though it was a vastly inferior product in comparison.

No one called for the heads of those sites who rated FF for the 360 the same or higher.

My launched ps3 has turned into Frankenstein. It over heated about 2 years ago so I took it apart did some modifications to get more air into the system. Now it has 4 fans to keep it cool and a whole bunch of LED lights to keep it alive. Currently it is still running, but i now have 2 extra ps3 for backup purposes.

Because not all PS3 Fats are created equal.

Launch 20 and 60GB units were created with hot 90nm CPU and GPU fabs.

But later 2007 PS3s, such as my 80GB unit, have the cooler running 65nm CPU and GPU.

Also Sept of 2011, I changed my Thermal paste (I used Arctic Silver 5 ) and now it runs like the first day I bought it. I even leave my PS3 on sometimes for weeks at a time.

Currently, my PS3 is on, and I haven't turned it off for 4 or 5 days.

I did the same with my fat 80gb, took it to bits cleaned it out and put some new thermal past on the CPU & GPU and now it’s back to silent running.It’s like PC's if you don't give them some tlc eventually they die.

I also removed the fabric strip that cleans the discs on the blu-ray as it was starting to sag and being fed into the drive when I inserted a game, after 5 years of constant use I’m not surprised that happened.

Your PS3 FAT died because you waited until it broke to fix it.
You were supposed to change your paste BEFORE it had problems. PREVENTATIVE MAINTENCE would have saved your PS3.

i bought my 60gb in march of 2007. i do everything the owners manual said to do to it like vacuum the dust out of the vents weekly, keep all sides 10 cm away from objects to ensure propper cooling, not expose it to cigarette smoke etc etc. it runs like the day i bought it. like a dream. my friends fat 160gb hasnt quit. my other friends 60 gb hasnt quit. the only friends ps3 that i know quit is the friend that smokes. poor things choking on cigarette smoke. so you know, i would bet money that the majority of fat ps3 are still in our entertainment centers

I never had a custom built PC Die and both of mine run 24/7/365 and are always either playing games, decoding video, or Folding Proteins.....I never EVER turn them off unless to restart from Software updates!

Some "Hardware" just has poor designs and cheap parts thus will succumb to Heat and fail! If made correctly Hardware can and will last forever!

Same thing happened to me a few months ago. I sold my broken 60GB PS3 on ebay for $100 and turned around and bought the latest model used for $160. Apparently people are fixing the backwards compatible models and selling them for a lot of money.

I like the new one much better, it runs almost completely silent and the wifi antenna is 100 times better than the older model. I miss the extra USB ports though, having to use a powered USB hub.

Boo fu**ing hoo. It's data from a video game. Sure it might be from every PSX, PS2, and PS3 game you own, but why does it really matter?

What's the point in having logs of end game data that you're never going to go back to. I'm a huge RPG fan and while I do keep a record of all my end game data, when loading the data up, it's not that fun because I've did everything and the only thing left to do is complete the game(again.) What kind of fun is that.

If anything it's a blessing in disguise as you'll now be able to replay these games and if you liked them, get more enjoyment, something which a kill everyone in a single hit file won't offer you.

That part about the YLOD maybe being intentional is wrong. Sony didn't do that. My 60GB PS3 I got a couple months after the PS3 came out died after a couple years but I installed a new 7200 RPM hard drive in it and I think that did it. A 7200 RPM hard drive creates more heat and the old PS3's ran really hot. The newer models are a lot better. That's the main reason to maybe wait for the new model, they make things better. I guess the RROD was the same thing but a bigger problem. You didn't have to install anything for that one to happen.

I actually felt more pissed than emotional when my first party 360 core system died right at the title screen of Alan Wake on my first launch of the game. I had to buy another one just to play it, and then guess what happens: the second one died right in the middle of my Gears of War 2 run. That was the moment I dropped the F bomb and started a new game on Heavy Rain instead. Guess I'll be playing GeoW 2-3 on the next Xbox console, if they plan on adding some sort of backwards compatibility.

My 20 gig launch party PS3 (NTSC/J) however, works flawlessly. I'll consider myself half lucky.

Same thing happened to me but I was able to take it apart and successfully fix the problem (which was the heat-sink and therm o-paste that Sony had used), it was actually quite simple. I still don't trust it and will replace my old PS3 with a Slim but have to focus on my Wii U first.

Thank god i never had this problem.. None of my systems died b4 other than my old pro 360.. Microsoft fixed it for me free of charge but i still traded it for the slimmer model to be safe.. Pointless article. The PS3 will remain as one of the best consoles ever made. I was actually trying to get HDMI for my Xbox 360 so I could play Halo 4 to gt the best visuals possible. Come to find out, my 360 was the old version, which isn't HDMI ready. It blew my life and made me appreciate my old PS3. I don't even know why I never thought about it. Sure, at the beginning, they will be a bit/very expensive, but as soon as they become cheap, imagine a game 5-7 bigger and better than uncharted 2.imagine you link another console, you get 1080p @ 120 fps. You link them with a 3rd console: you get 1024*1024 px uncompressed textures, instead of 256*256 px with 60% compression. You add a 4th console, you get 4k@120fps with some 128x anti aliasing algorithms. You add a 5th ps4, you get 4k@120fps raytraced graphics.

Still not enough? Add a 6th ps4, for 4096*4096 px textures, 240fps, raytraced 4k graphics, with 192khz 24 bit audio...

Guys, go on and disagree, I'm fine with that. Laugh, if you want. But imagine the next Xbox or PlayStation being able to do this.sure, electricity,4k tv... Imagine a flexible system, where the average Joe would get the best graphics One console could output, a game 10 times bigger and beautiful than, for example, mass effect 3, or the next gta5, which would be awesome. Then, if a guy can afford to buy a second system, he can choose between 5x bigger and crispier textures, better resolution or, double the framerate. Then you get some cash for your birthday.cool, the console costs 199$, you buy a 3rd system. With the extra power, you will be able to use a much better graphic engine, with much better textures, lights,framerate, anti aliasing.

I bet most people here, just like pc gamers buy the fastest ram,processor and graphic card, for the best graphics, would buy several systems, in the quest of the perfect graphics. You have 3 consoles linked, you already have a god of war 5 or halo 6 insane graphics, your friend calls you for some gaming, you discover he has 5 consoles, with the most insane graphics you never thought could exist. During the next month, you will save all your money, and will buy another system.

A modular system like this would be great. You want a gta6 raytraced, with pixar/avatar textures and graphics? Easy, save some cash, and buy a few more systems.

With this system, no more need to develop a new console every 5 years. Just build a freaking not-too-expensive system,with some great tech and a upgradable DirectX graphic card, as the main console. And then, just sell the 'upgrade' pack: a small box with the CPU,ram and graphic card, much cheaper than the full console.each upgrade you add, will give you much more power. While the content would not change, the graphics would be much better. You are happy with the standard graphics the main console outputs? Fine. Now, you want some crazy pixar/avatar-like graphics at 240 fps at 2k or 4k resolutions? It's possible, just buy some upgrade packs, if you have enough cash.

With a system like this(sure, there's the price of the electricity, space, heat,etc), Sony or microsoft wouldnt need to spend billions on a new console every 5,4 years. 2 years after launching the console, the upgrade packs could be sold really cheap, like 50-70$, with no fan,etc. Just a little cute box, like an external 3.5" hard drive. You could add like 20 or more extra boxes, if you want to. and whenever the main console is a bit outdated, they just release a new one, with some new techs and DirectX,etc, and you can use the 15 upgrades you already had.

Please, sony, Microsoft, make a system like this, where I can play a god of war or halo, with avatar quality, my money is yours.

While it's not impossible, it's just not practical at all. Not only your room would look like a crazy science experiment, but also you'd get some seriously high electricity bills. It's like running five computers at the same time, and as bozebo stated, you can do that with a single computer case. Just SLI two 690 GTXs with the same price you're willing to spend on three/four consoles and you'll have such a beast config that it could run the Samatrian demo at 200+ FPS. And the best side of it is that you wouldn't look like Emmeth Brown.

Ha, it wasnt Sony that ushered in the age of the disposable console. You got a good run out of it, I dont think you can be too upset. I still have a working SNES (but someties you need to jam a coin in next to the game) and even a Starfox cartridge that sat overnight in a swimming pool, but consoles are more complicated now days. More parts means more potential for breakdown.

People are generally unaware of the fact that old electronic equipment contained a lot of heavy metals which makes it last much, much longer. A directive called RoHS was introduced in 2007 in EU. I'm not sure about outside EU like USA but I think there are similar regulations. Since then, all legally produced or imported electronic equipment contains a lot less lead, mercury and other heavy metals.

Modern electronic equipment will last much shorter. Of course, there are more factors contributing to that. More mass production means less quality to everything you buy. First, expensive fat PS3s have better quality materials than today's slims. On the contrary, they consume less energy and should produce less heat. However, modern electronics is far more complicated than old devices. A small, microscopic failure in it may render it completely useless. Taking all that into consideration, don't expect your slim PS3 to last as long as your first SNES or PS1. There aren't many things produced nowadays which will be dug up by archeologists in 1000 years...

Oh well, I am a 40yo gamer, never had that happen on one of my Sega or Nintendo systems EVER. Oh yeah, I have had it happen on my high end PC's though. Some of my systems are older than most of you on this site. They have also been dropped, kicked, and rained on. The cartridges, CD's, Mini-DVD's, and Consoles all still work. When it has happened on my PC's all info is already backed up, so it is no issue. Just a pain in the butt.
