Should We Kill Gameplay?

"Gameplay has always been the most prominent feature of any game—which is only natural, since it’s what the whole medium focuses on. However, a few developers intend to do away with it entirely in their game The Astronauts—instead focusing on things such as the plot, graphics, and subverting any death consequences. The goal is ultimately to make an easier experience and cut out all of the difficulty associated with reaching the final boss or unlocking an extra cut scene, which brings me to our point—without gameplay, what is there left to a game? Is it really something we should be reworking?" Explosion.com

I agree with the writer's perspectives. Without gameplay, there really isn't any game to speak of. You can make a game without death consequences (Kirby's Epic Yarn), plot (Tetris), and even objectives (Minecraft), but without any tactile gameplay, you have no game. I acknowledge The Astronauts devs' vision, but they don't sound like game developers to me. They sound like, yes, visual novelists.

No, and I agree with the author. Although I agree that graphics and environment are a significant portion of gaming today, it will never replace gameplay. I personally despise qte and am sick of running into cut scene after cut scene, only to hit x and my player does what he has to in order to end the scene.

I don't pay $60 for a movie. I want to feel that I'm actually interacting with the environment.

Nothing beats gameplay.

Tell that to reviewers these days, I've read and I quote " this game is fun, the gameplay addicting" then follows with ... And I quote " the frame rate drops while in the MENUS" and for that fact the game gets a 5. I guess frame rate with the menus are just as important as fun, addicting gameplay to these so called reviewers in today's gaming world.... Smh

Everything you use is to enhance gameplay. Gameplay is the fundimental core for interaction. Interaction involves some form of user input or control. Control is the only thing seperating this form of media from every other. It is why it has surpassed all other forms of media. It makes the experience a two way street. Without it we regress to reading books, listening to music, and watching movies.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer4h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me
