Are single-player first-person shooter campaigns a lost cause?

The Independent: "Half-Life 3, if you’re out there, you’ve got a lot of hopes resting on your shoulders."

Perfect example of Peter Moleneux's comments on reviewers not playing games & not knowing what the hell theyre talking about.

Halo is different everytime you play it. Its a sandbox shooter with a fantastic "Star Wars" quality story!

Halo has "Best Selling List" Novels based on the "Story" not the Multiplayer.

Now if your single player game is "Scripted": COD, MOH, BF, "New" Ghost Recon:FS", etc... then the single player is an issue!

Halo & Half-Life can be in the same sentence due to its sandbox style of play.
However: Halo stands alone as it can be sandbox & play the entire "Campaign" in 4 player co-op!, Without being cell-shaded.

Also, the author mentioned playing COD on Veteran: same scripted events!!! It will be the same game, same pop up shooting.
Halo on Heroic: different game everytime you play! Not Scripted, Not Corridor, You play as you like!

NOPE.....Cause Half Life 2 Ep3 SP Campaign is gonna once again set a new Benchmark in Gaming!

Plus Metro Last Light SP campaign is gonna be good....Bioshock Infinite aswell.

SP campaigns all depends on if the Dev/pub wants a quality title or if they are just trying to copy COD MP!

Anyone wanna tell me how Halo 4 campaign is? good or bad let me know!

I prefer a single player FPS almost more than online. Call me weird?

t0mmyb0y4178d ago

It was a question lol. I thought most people these days preferred online gaming is all.

e-p-ayeaH4178d ago (Edited 4178d ago )

That´s the true essence for buying a specific game in my opinion.

Legend4178d ago

That's good Ricky! It means you're thinking!

Panthers4178d ago

I am so done with online FPS games. I only play single player now.

JsonHenry4178d ago

Depends on the game. I've never played through a CoD, Battlefield, or MoH campaign since the first games in the series. But I love the multiplayer. But give me a STALKER, Bioshock, or Doom game and I will play the single player.

The Meerkat4178d ago

No. Black Ops and Bioshock both contained WTF moments you can't get from MP

Master Chief Became More Than A Machine In 343's Halo

In Halo 4, 5, and Infinite, Master Chief became a more nuanced, human character.

In spite of the Halo series’ struggles, 343 deserves praise for adding nuance and characterisation to the ever-beating heart of Halo - The Master Chief. Playing through Infinite, it's abundantly clear that the events of the current and previous trilogies have irrevocably changed the iconic hero. He’s no longer the ‘blank slate’ that was previously presented by Bungie. He’s a fatigued, damaged and fallible protagonist, and one who is meandering through currents of grief, while reveling in his newfound agency. Giving the Chief a compelling and meaningful voice was no small feat, and 343 should be proud of that victory.

This article completely misses part of the appeal of the original iteration of character in the original game trilogy. It was the Chief and Cortana vs an entire alien collective. The blank slate Bungie displayed in their games was genius, he was an mysterious hero a wide audience could identify with because he wasn't as clearly defined as most characters.

The books added a lot of lore and backstory but most Halo players just want a fun game with exposition that doesn't get in the way of gameplay, it's why the Cortana level in Halo 3 was derided.

Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty.

BandarHub399d ago

A lot of people give the 343 version of Master Chief a lot of slack.
But Fundamentally he is still the same character, he just has a couple more dialogues. He has not changed in terms of attitude.
"Not every character has to be a damaged soyboy, a soldier has to suck it up and do his duty."
And that's what he has done at the end of the day, he did his duty. Watch his partner die, and was ready to destroy the weapon in Halo infinite....he is still the same soilder that everyone remembers

Halo Infintes one was a nice balance between both.

Chief and the halo franchise became a joke under 343

Sciurus_vulgaris399d ago

The 343i Master Chief has is based on the books. However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion.

Obscure_Observer399d ago

"However, in Halo 4-Infinite, the Master Chief overtime become. gradually becomes more willing to show some emotion."

Which is awesome! I love how Master Chief become more John and less soldier.

U.S. Army Planned to Pay Streamers Millions to Reach Gen-Z Through Call of Duty

Internal Army documents obtained by Motherboard provide insight on how the Army wanted to reach Gen-Z, women, and Black and Hispanic people through Twitch, Paramount+, and the WWE.

isarai502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

It's well known the US Army has been using gaming as a gateway for recruiting for a LOOONG time. Hell even in high school recruiters would ask whoever wasnt interested for their gamertag so they can play Cod together. Not to mention they've sponsored several fps tournaments. Not a conspiracy when it's out in the open. Plus Arma exists so...

Inverno503d ago

Instead of trying to get them to join then military through bs trends why not instead tell em of the benefits that joining the military bring? Least in times of peace and without the threat of war, having your studies paid in full sounds better than "hey you can do what you do in COD by joining the army, isn't that cool?"

kneon502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

The USA has been involved in wars/conflicts for 90+% of its existence so you're unlikely to be in the US Military during peacetime

Old_Scout502d ago

I was a recruiter. You can tell a kid the benefits all day long. Ultimately it's a calling and you just call the right person and do the paperwork.

thorstein502d ago

"I was a recruiter. You can LIE TO a kid about the benefits all day long."

FTFY

thorstein503d ago

I think it is absurd that the US military has millions if not billions of dollars in their advertising budget. It is absurd that they have an advertising budget.

TiredGamer502d ago

Would you prefer forced conscription like in Russia?

gold_drake502d ago (Edited 502d ago )

i had that in austria
wasnt all too bad. 6 months of listening to idiots screaming nonsense. you dont actually participate in any war, but i guess ametica is a different kind of hell when it comes to that. who knows what they'd put ppl through lol

ended up enlisting actually haha. sniper training was like 7 weeks. not a bad life

thorstein502d ago

The alternate to spending millions of dollars on advertising is forced conscription?

Wow, you learn something every day.

Gee, how would anyone in the whole world learn about the US military if it weren't for advertising.

Vengeance1138503d ago

Can't wait to die and respawn in real life! Oh wait...

jznrpg502d ago

We all wish … I’d love to see my baby bro and grandfather again .

TheColbertinator502d ago

@jznrpg

Sorry about your losses, friend.

On topic :

I thought the Army was always using FPS games. This is not new.

HyperMoused502d ago

A bit on the nose isnt it...like killin in the game...join up and kill in real life

Halo's Identity Problem Began With an Admirable Mess

It’s a law of nature that eventually, every long-running game franchise will have a particular entry that gets dinged for straying too far from what made it so fun in the first place. Your Super Mario Sunshine, your Dragon Age II, Assassin’s Creed III, and so on. Whether or not that opinion changes more favorably over time, the initial specter of negativity will forever hover it. Microsoft’s Halo is no exception, except that negative specter hasn’t hovered over one particular game, but one whole studio.

The3faces520d ago

True Halo 4 was a sign of 343i's incompetence and the decline of Halo.
