David of GamesRadar - I was playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown the other day. This should come as no surprise, as playing XCOM: Enemy Unknown is basically all I do these days. I pretty much agree with this article. Tbh, that's the one thing that's made me a little sad about Halo 4. They had a system, that was really pure. You win, you level up. You lose you don't. Halo 3 was much like Super Street Fighter IV for me and I play those games still. It's another reason why I play gears. I am atleast hap that Halo 4 is using a different take on progression, but it just rather have none.

Great article. I agree. "Back in the day" (ohhh I'm showing my age) with action games like the Quakes, Unreal Tournament, Tribes, Warcraft 2, etc. you simply played the games and enjoyed them. Other than the score that you saw at the end of the match, there was no levelling up, no leaderboards, no achievements, nothing.
Granted, it IS fun to level up and get all sorts of little perks, but then it turns into a treadmill just to get to the next level. I wish developers would FIRST make a game really fun (regardless of any level-up treadmills) and then add in that stuff later if need be instead of designing the game from the ground up that way.
Some random person I've never met, can't determine weather or not I've increased or decreased in skill as a gamer.

I always compared the difference as grinding skill or grinding gear/XP. Street Fighters (and other fighting game players) grind skill. MMORPG players (and the like) grind gear/XP.
I can't wait to try out the XCOM MP now! Well, as soon as I finish my Classic difficulty run.
