What Do We Think About Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale So Far?

Superbot’s upcoming brawler, Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale (AKA Sony’s Smash Bros clone), releases in less than two and a half weeks. After getting some hands-on time with the beta, we’ve decided to bring Dusty Cartridge’s own Mark Ankucic and Martin Gladstone to discuss what they did and didn’t like about the game, if any improvements still need to be made prior to release and much more!

I did the same thing, but to be fair, I didn't really like Smash Bros back in the day either. There were people that really knew what they were doing during the several beta matches I played though, so there is a market for this game

I get where you're coming from. I pre-ordered and thought the betas (private and public) were just okay. I still have it pre-ordered because I know that there will be more game modes, more characters, and the cross-buy. I think the retail version with everything, will make the game beyond "meh".

I downloaded the Beta and really enjoyed the demo. I cant play it for hours straight though i only pick up and play a few rounds then play something else.

It's a demo but it really doesnt properly demo the game because itll release with lots of different game modes. It's supposed to just be to demo the combat system, which i think is very fluid and fun.

My constructive criticism to make the game better:

the bad
First of all the game looks bland,
and it has no life at all (
soulless, no spirit of fun
it does not scream fun like Street Fighter II
the characters are too small on PS3 much more on the Vita.
art direction has no festive or warm feeling
graphics look sterile
characters are lifeless and stiff
the music is atrocious
the marketing is dumb…come on dumbstep?
the developers take the game too serious
the game takes itself too serious
game design is gloomy
no story mode like in Tekken

the fighting mechanics
the character line up…Nariko is awesome
the balls & generosity Sony had to grant the PlayStation community's requests. That is very important.

should have been made a 3-D fighter like Power Stone 2 and God of War: Ascension to really capture the 3-D generation the characters’ original games were made for...
... and most specially in order to save Sony from the unnecessary uproar of Nintendo men-children fans with Peter Pan syndrome.

but hey Sony can get it right maybe with the sequel.

never the less anybody can find a way to have lots of fun with this game specially fighting game fans.

Kratos is my guy won a lot with him

Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses like parappa's number 2 super is deadly you could score at up to 5 kills with that super if your slick enough

It a fun game but it a unbalanced mess. Sly cooper and kratos are just overpowered.

Sly is over powered? It just shows how many people's view of over powered is different. People were saying Parappa was over powered. Besides Kratos is not over powered. His AP just goes up too fast. They said they will adjust it.I can beat Kratos and Sly with Fat Princess and she has the shortest reach in the game. Sly isn't over powered in the least. Must be your skills in question.

@ Blastoise. Good point. I am not sure at what point SSB had a 'strong single player'. I swear some Nintendo people are downright deluded. Single player in all SSB games were barely anything special. What I find especially funny is that people are judging it based on six characters, two modes and two levels. We haven't even seen the extent of the whole game and all the unlockables or story mode or anything but people are basing all their judgements on an unfinished game. The beta is two months old and not even the final game. In fact the latest Superbot build even has the amount of points you have gotten at the bottom of the screen on each characters image so you can tell who is winning or losing. It's a huge improvement and I bet half the people here don't even know about it. No more second guessing who is winning and losing.

Yeah I saw that during the MLG tourney, but I wasn't sure if it was actually the game itself or if MLG did that themselves. If it is the new build, then kudos yet again to SuperBot. They are definitely listening to people's complaints and suggestions and are implementing them.

It would be nice to hear praise for this game for a change.
Instead of "such and such is overpowered" "I don't like how you win using supers" & "It's too much like smash bro's". And people are really making out like the beta is full of technical problems when its really not..

I think its a great game and I don't understand the hate. I don't think any character is overpowered other than how fast Krato's gains his points.

The graphics are great, it runs totally smooth, the supers are awesome, every character has like a million moves & the characters themselves are very different.

The only complaint that I agree with is occasionally getting lost when there are a lot of the same characters on screen. Other than that, this game is a blast.

I agree, and this game is so freckin competitive. I and 3 other players made it to 4X AP Overtime, and I thought it ended at 3X, this game is most definitely a day one purchase.
As for other people its like people are never going to accept change or something different, this game is perfect for the playstation platform(s), I literally couldn't stop playing the beta, I played the Hell out of it.

15 more days and it will be mine... I wonder how many matches went on during the beta...

Wait what??? What kind of "depth and shenanigans" do other fighting games have that this one doesn't? If anything this game has ALOT more depth than other games of the genre because Playstation gamers are familiar with characters. Kratos isn't just another random fighter in the list. He's a pissed off walking apocalypse. Nathan Drake isn't just some random fighter, he's the witty, charming treasure hunter of the Uncharted series. Cole MacGrath isn't just some fighter he's the savior of empire city OR the end of mankind. Unlike most fighters which feature a 3 second cutscene or a paragraph in their respective games we actually know and care about these characters.

Oh and as for shenanigans, if racoons, clowns, gods, treasure hunters, heavenly warriors, superheroes, plush dolls, princesses, lombaxes, robots, ottsels, emo demon hunters, scuba suited walking tanks, cyborgs, singing karate fighting puppies, cats, and skeletons ALL fighting to the death for your entertainment isn't enough "shenanigans". I'm afraid nothing will ever be.

Let me tell you why your comment is debatable:

First .
being familliar whith the characters means nothing if they are different from their respective game movesets. i'm talking movesets , not characters moves ..i'm not saying that those moves are bad just that everyone will have to learn those characters from scratch because they behave differently in PSABR . notable example are , nathan drake , and cake princess or even sly raccon .
Heck even kratos behave totally differently for his games. your argument that knowing the characters = depth is void simply because they will need a learning curve since they are different.

I kept my preorder, but I have to say that they took out all the GREAT things about smash and simply left this "Super-System" empty shell. Its pretty dissapointing.

When you look at how much development time was devoted into the SUPERs, you'll soon realize it was wasted. It could of been used for additional characters/levels/combos.

And i wouldnt be surprised for the full games to have more modes with some kind of health system or other ways of scoring such as capture the flag. But i personally thought the Super system works so well, the choice between the 3 levels really creates a paradigm which makes for fun matches.

I thought it would be a clone of smash brothers but after playing the demo I realize that even though it looks similar it plays very different. I need to see some reviews though because even though the beta was a pleasant experience to me I still felt that there was something lacking in it. Also I could barely play the game with my crappy internet connection which is probably one of the main reasons why I won't get it.

In a fighting game you look for basic stuff not really a story that's bonus. Arcade, Local vs, Multiplayer Online vs, Survival, and Replay modes. Smash bros had a story mode well this isn't Mario its not at all. Game is fine with basic Arcade endings.
