I used to love reading the instruction manual. I agree with the author, I wasn't always with my game console, so sometimes I would read the instruction booklet to tide me over until I could play the game. Or sometimes I just liked to learn more about the story before I jumped in and started playing.

I guess some kids nowadays don't have the patience us older gamers have. They are all in guns blazing without a care in the world. What story they say.

I understand with companies trying to cut costs where they can, they figure that all games share the same basic controls now, so why show them when they can just learn it on the fly. Plus, they figure they can just give us a story synopsis during the opening credits of the game.

May the instruction booklet Rest In Peace.

When I was young I used to read all the character information in the Resident Evil instruction manual.

Now I'm a bit older I don't really care that much.

I do still enjoy all the R* instruction booklets and the free maps. I hope they continue.

I remember RE1 explaining stars and having newspaper clipouts and stuff about the backstory to RE> Halo was good like that too

Metal gears little comics

I agree, but I don't feel it's about lack of patience, I think it's more the advent of technology.

I read the Halo 4 Instruction booklet (and a lot more) 2 weeks before release here: http://www.halowaypoint.com...

Although I still enjoy a small instruction booklet, they aren't really needed and in this day and age arguably quite wasteful.

The were nice but in theory a waste of money and time. It does make sense to put them on the disc now/ have a good tutorial

guitarded774187d ago

I prefer an in game guide in the menus. I'd rather pause to look something up, instead of grab the case and pull out the book. Plus most games first levels hold your hand with a tutorial... which is getting old in itself. How many virtual target ranges do I have to visit?

silkrevolver4187d ago

I noticed this last night.
It's sad, to be sure, but at least it's cost effective and saves trees.

I don't think I have ever used one of those "manuals". But I think we can all agree that when we were younger we tried to find "cheat codes" or "level walkthroughs" in the manuals. Or maybe that was just me.

Well, 4-Infinite dropped the ball massively so don't worry.

Sgt_Slaughter64d ago (Edited 64d ago )

Not really. 4, 5, MCC, and Infinite are only remembered for their shortcomings and failures when the franchise was purely known for being a system seller and an all-time great. There's a reason 1, 2, 3, and Reach are looked back on fondly, and it's not because of nostalgia.

FinalFantasyFanatic64d ago

I don't know of anyone that speaks fondly of the later Halo games, I would like to play 5, but I know it's not good, and I'm just waiting on Infinite to hit my strike price. I played MCC a lot later after it came out, so must of those bugs/issues were gone by the time I played it.

To say it dropped the massively is just not true. Many in the community hold H5 as the best mp mechanics in the entire series and say its what 4 should've been. Its campaign was trash but the MP is Fantastic and many faces of the community still play today and it only made 500mill in the matter of months but sure it dropped the ball massively. 4 was hated due to all the changes at once. And CoD like feature and rightful get hate but it's campaign story was liked by a majority of ppl. 343 hasn't nailed ot 100% but they get 1 thing perfect but F up in other places. Infinite had a good campaign and design but the story was a mess. The MP improves upon what Halo 3 was and is what many ppl wanted to go back to but it lacked content severely. So massively aint the word. Dropping the ball massively is when it's pure trash and unplay/unenjoyable. Most ppl blind by nostalgia so soon as 1 thing aint the same its hated cause Halo set the bar so high
FYI reach was not that good.

Dead IP, time to invent something new.

kaos8964d ago

Maybe they can have ID or one of the COD studios help 343 with this series.
