Shin’en Mega Interview: Harnessing the Wii U power

"InquiringMind: Hi Manfred, what lessons have you learned from the feedback and reviews of Nano Assault 3DS for Neo? Its reception was globally positive, but some players – forgetting it’s quite common for the genre – criticized its shortness, its unforgiving difficulty with instant hit deaths, as well as a few control problems.
Manfred Linzner: We try to read all reviews and boards about our games and think about what could be done better next time. For Nano Assault 3DS, I believe most people were very pleased with length and replay value. Our game has much more to offer than the majority of shoot’em ups available on the market, but of course people tend to ask for more if its fun. Also regarding difficulty, we got very different opinions in reviews and from players. If you give the game only a few minutes you might think: “Wow, that’s hard!” but if you play for some time you adjust your tactics and see how the game adapts the difficulty depending on your progress. And we have now ship energy to avoid one-hit deaths. Regarding controls, we were never fully satisfied but we think the current controls were the best achievable on the 3DS. For Nano Assault EX, we finally perfected the controls by adding Circle Pad Pro support. And thanks to the Wii U gamepad, we can also deliver on this system a true dual analog stick control scheme.", writes NotEnoughShaders.

Hands down one of the best inside articles about the WiiU and its potential to date from a developer...

All of the questions that the interviewer asked were things that I really wanted to know about! Something that piqued my interest was this quote,
"When testing our first code on Wii U we were amazed how much we could throw at it without any slowdowns, at that time we even had zero optimizations."
Once again a developer mentioning how they were able to run things with zero optimization.
Here's also something that has never been mentioned before about WiiU.
"The CPU and GPU are a good match. As said before, today’s hardware has bottlenecks with memory throughput when you don’t care about your coding style and data layout. This is true for any hardware and can’t be only cured by throwing more megahertz and cores on it. Fortunately Nintendo made very wise choices for cache layout, ram latency and ram size to work against these pitfalls. Also Nintendo took care that other components like the Wii U GamePad screen streaming, or the built-in camera don’t put a burden on the CPU or GPU."

:So my question is, How does the Gamepad or camera not effect the overall performance of the CPU and GPU? What is Nintendo not revealing about this system that enables it to perform in such a way? Because most people here and on many other sites have viewed the gamepad as a hindrance and being one of the reasons why games aren't native 1080p! But this developer is coming out and debunking all of that by saying it has no burden on the WiiU's CPU or GPU at all... As Cell once said to Gohan, Incredible :-) lol

Anyone played Art of Balance yet? How is it? I think I should grab this one while it's cheap. Plus I want to support Shin'En, they're good.

Nano Assault Neo is definitely worth the pickup if you don't have it already. I love that one.

There is a demo for art of balance, I think I will pick it up. I enjoyed the demo. It is a nice change of pace.

Also Nano Assault, that game is great, well worth the price.

It would be nice if it came out on the X1 as well. This is literally only one of a handful of games I would even get on the Wii.

In response to yours truly, the company said, “Perhaps you can play another Shin’en shooter soon on your PS4”. Sweet. Shin'en has done wonders for Nintendo. Glad to see others will be able to enjoy them. I wonder if it will be either a port of Nano Assault Neo or a brand new iteration?

BoneBone3584d ago

Also all the stuff Shin'en say about Wii U hardware being quite powerful can't be met with "Well, what do they know, they only make games for Nintendo anyway", anymore!

Yay ;-)

Maybe now ps4 owners will see why us wii u owners love to brag about shin'en so often.
Hope their new game finds some success!
