You have to look at the overall investment you are making. If it is a well made product, I think that $600 bucks for a console is reasonable. I would much rather have something top of the line so in 6 years, its still worth a damn.

the best thing the ps4 has going for it which should help keep the price down is that Blu-ray is no longer new tech and wont cost a lot to implement into every console. the ps3's internals were also based on new unique tech. Sony took a gamble with innovation on the ps3. At first it didnt pay off, but theres no denying it being an incredible piece of hardware.

i hope they dont turn into an Apple and continue to price high with all their new products. Ps4 should come in around $350-$400 at launch if not less. But seeing as the Vita was $250..cant really help but think a full blown console will be at least a $100 more.

This seems to be a very difficult balance and sensitive subject.

Everyone wants to talk the talk of wanting high specs, but nobody wants to pay for it. I am one of the minority that would pay a premium for pretty much any console if the games are there. I personally would say go with high specs and high price but usually a high price gets low sales. It is always the cheaper platform that enjoys the lucrative sales. Product moves from the shelves at a faster rate, while developer support is usually superior due to increased install base. Every high priced high spec platform that I can remember has always had a moderate install base with mediocre developer support.

If the Vita and early days of the PS3 are any indication of what would happen with high price and high specs. I would choose low for the greater good of the corporation. If you are forced to sell at a high price you are likely taking a loss on units sold as well. Making it difficult to drop the price of the unit in case of emergency.

OT: If the PS4 uses an APU and a separate graphics card as I expect the power per price will be really surprising.

The game engines have already set the bar; It's just up to the console manufacturers to match it.

Those gamers crying for next gen right now may not realize it, but another year or two until release means the difference between 1080p in 3D to 4K@60FPS at the price point that is generally agreed upon.

The 720 and PS4 have to aim for the $400-500 price point to appease the different groups that regularly support their products.

As good as games have gotten only a few have even scratched the surface of scale and detail I would eventually like to see in-game.

For me it depends mostly on the games, I think. Don't get me wrong, I love me some sweet sweet graphics, and it's true that choppy framerates and slowdown/lag can take away from some experiences. Oh my yes. But as long as THAT can be avoided, games will sell me the system.

And as sad as it is to admit, while *I* might see the value in paying more, and people reading this site might see the value in paying more, the market at large usually doesn't (history shows). They might have to hold back a little bit on tech in order to keep costs lower.

360 Has The Witcher 2, Skyrim, Halo 4, Forza 4 and Horizon, Crysis 2. All these games are the most demanding and technically advanced games this generation due to a mix of size, scope, openess, graphical fidelity or a combonation of(most technically advanced multi plats that are open and look good thrive on the 360)

You base your opinion on linear, QTE, static, fixed camra angle, stripped down features and social design types of games.

The xbox hardware isnt settling for price, it's just smartly designed without a HD disc drive adding to half of its cost.

THE 360 WAS $400 WHEN IT CAME OUT, THE PS3 WAS $600. BLU-RAY PLAYERS WERE 6-8 HUNDRED BUCKS. PS3'S COST HAS MORE TO DO WITH BLU-RAY.

There is a reason MSFT is rolling out a 360 payment plan test run, MSFT has too put expensive powerful hardware in the 360 to do all the things they're planning and to make sure no other console is more capable.

MSFT won't do a real 360 price drop because they're preparing for the massive hit they're going to take with the 720. MSFT is milking the 360 price due to high demand for the 360 in preperation of 720.

The PS3 did not launch at $425...
It launched at $599 in the United States and $699 in Canada and almost $800+ in Australia.
After the early adopters and hardcore gamers buying the PS3, sales plummeted because of that cost. Moreover many of the units sold were then out on ebay for outrageous costs...then the following day they were pulled because NO one bought them at that price.

How wrong Sony was. So wrong that they lost close to 40% market share to Microsoft and Nintendo in one generation...mostly because of the insane launch price. EVEN Sony themselves acknowledge this and said they would never repeat that mistake.
As for selling faster at launch?
Numbers seem to challenge you on that. After a month SALES PLUMMETED. So much so that Japan after just a few months on the market had a PRICE cut to move units.

Even if Microsoft and Sony both charged $600 for whatever they come up with, the hardware would still be behind in terms of most ideal modern performance for high quality graphics + physics + resolution + additional features.

I wish it was possible for "next-gen" consoles to have the TBA Ivy Bridge-E i7-3930, TBA OC 3Gb GDDR5 8970 or OC 3GB GDDR5 GTX 780 equivalent and 64GB of at least 1866Mhz 9-10-9-28 RAM and at least a 500GB high end SSD.

... you DO realize how unreasonable that is, right? Expecting closed systems to be able to perform at the same level as open systems that could, by their very nature, outclass them the day they release?

The PS4 and 720 could very well have BEEN high-end PCs at the start of their development... development which takes years to finalize. So, by the time they've been sent- in kit form- to developers so they can understand the architecture and make games for it, and by the time it's seen its completed form reach shelves, it would be inferior to new things made in just the few months prior to its release.

For the console makers to put out systems that were the SAME level as high-end PCs when they launched, they'd have to be ABOVE that long before launch. How would they do that?

Very good point. Damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they release a weaker console at an affordable price people will cry that it isn't strong enough and if they put tons of raw power into it and make you pay for it people will cry it is too expensive. Sony is always expected to do everything to perfectly while others just toss you a bone and everyone runs after it. Microsoft practically tossed you a broken console and no one minded and still pretend it didn't matter because they managed to fix it after three years. If they want to compare to pcs then the graphics alone will ball park around 400. It will be high end compared to its ancestor but not to high that it will break the bank. It should be less than the jump from ps2 to ps3 but probably be able to support 4K.

Either way, the jump will be huge. Graphics of launch titles will be easily in line with current high-ish-end gaming PCs (only really go higher end than that to play on very high resolutions).

I think the funniest thing about articles like this is this misconception the the PS3 isn't a success. Look, the PS3 while "technically" in 3rd is barely in 3rd place and will have sold over 70 million units after the holiday is done. 70 million units moved in a generation where its competitors did as much or more is a success if you ask me.

I will be glad to see them move away from the cell if they do, but ultimately I am not sure at this point it would kill them if they stuck with the cell. Develop may not like it as much but they have 5+ yrs now with it. Give them more RAM and more cell and I think we still can see top flight games.

Unfortunately, most people don't agree. If Sony released an expensive console, sales would be low. That affects me, because lower sales = lower install base = less developer support.

What I would love to see is Sony's and MSs console released on the say day at the exact same price. Maybe that would force people to do their research and actually buy the right console for them as a gamer.

Either that or it would spark the biggest fanboy war in history with actual casualties.

I hope for Sony that this time around they are able to make the Playstation 4 profitable.

For over the last six years Sony's gaming division did not have a good track record considering the financial side.

But please Sony, distribute as much PS4's as you can so wholesaler's can get discount and we as consumers are able to get a console for a NORMAL price(flashback to PS3).
Also sweep the advertising and PR division, it was really bad in contrast to Microsofts input.

So... if the rumors are true, the PS4 is basically an 8-core AMD piledriver with dual 7670s, that puts it on par with a pretty decent gaming rig.

Seriously though, it's always about the best price/performance when it comes to consoles. No console gamer is ever willing to pay a high price for a gaming console. If they thought it was okay to spend a high amount of money for a machine that they can play games on, they would just buy a powerful custom gaming rig and call it a day rather than waiting for a new generation of consoles to come impatiently. Companies like Sony know that, and they work hard to offer the best performing hardware for a reasonable price. There is no "low spec version" offered to you, and you can not decide on what you'll get, it's always the best performing and most profitable specs within a given price range.

Just looking at my 60gig PS3 turned off right now makes me realise how much of a luxury item it looks, especially with all the card readers, usb ports on it, etc.. it's the most versatile console this gen. I hope they carry that over to Next Gen!

Man if Sony releases the PS4 with the Next Uncharted, Next Killzone, Next Infamous, Next Heavy Rain/Beyond Souls, Next Last of Us... etc.. can you imagine the PS4's debut with 1 or 2 of these games right at launch? Im willing to bet it'd make plenty of people forget the price point... especially if the games truely capitalize on what they did so well this gen with graphics/physics/gameplay!

So long as my psn purchases still count, then I'm all good. Regarding backwards compatibility, I'd rather Sony have a upgrade that you plug into the back. (like the expansion bay on the phat ps2's)
