I doubt that ditching the PS2 would have helped the PS3. First, it's a different price segment. Nothing which the PS3 could have had compensated fully. I would speculate, it would have been filled by other low price products. And second, the Sony console gaming (not counting the PSP) still has twice as many sales then the 360, and 50% of those machines make real profit. I think by loosing that pillar, the PS3 would even be more expensive. The PS2 might still compensate for PS3 losses. All in all, its pretty amazing, the PS2 & PS3 sold in these numbers. No doubt, exceptional Nintendo numbers...and good PSP sales as well. It will really be interesting to see, how M$ will counter. They either need a mobile product (?? risky - another one ?) or need to push their 360 sales to make it attractive as a global player. US is covered, but if global PS3 SW sales will start to run away, M$ is in serious trouble.

Vgchartz.com is no longer able to inflate the 360 worldwide numbers enough to make a difference anymore.

Last year when the 360 was in the 7-8 million range and vgchartz had the 360 listed with the now infamous bogus '10.5 million sold' numbers it was significant. But over time as console sales move into the 10-20 million range you really can't inflate numbers enough to make a significant difference without getting caught having your worldwide sold numbers higher than the actual shipment numbers for a console.

40 x 7(360's lead in millons)= 280 monthes

It is now over 7 years that the PS2 has been on the market and the console just sold over 600k units.

That is what gets you developer support and gigantic libraries of games that appeal to the widest possible range of gaming tastes.

With the PS2 now at 130 million worldwide with actual sales in the 125-128 million or so sold it is fun to look back to what people were saying in 2000:

That's funny. While I remember a few idiot fanboys saying the Dreamcast would crush the PS2 (you always have some) most gamers seemed to buy into the Sony hype and think a victory was inevitable.

I also remember that by the time the PS2 had been out a year, the Dreamcast was utterly crushed. Fanboys can get excited all they want over whatever system sold a few more consoles or games this week, but the fact remains it's going to be a much closer, more competitive fight this time.

Wow the ps3 and the ps2 are selling crazy. I think sony will make their goal of selling 11 million untis by march. And i am gald to see that uncharted sold very well breaking the hafl million mark. i am also glad to see that need for speed a EA game outsold it 360 counterpart. this hopefully sends a message to EA so that they wont abandon the ps3 ans quit making inferior products. I hope unreal tournament 3 break the 1 million mark. them huys at epic did a great job with the game, they deserved good sales. Over all the ps3 has been seen a great increase in sales eversince the price drop. the only market keeping the 360 alive is here in NA.

Its a more calculated estimate. Which is usually at least in the RIGHT direction as far as sales go. They are off numerically, but the trends are right.

VGCharts isn't the first place we have seen/heard the ps3 selling so well. What will really amaze me, is if it really is selling more software. Or if they are counting PLAYSTATION as 1 software seller.

I can't wait to see the effect of a further price drop in 2008. Even with the better software library, and better rated games of the 360, it still isn't penetrating the PlayStation fanbase to convert. PS3 is holding its own, not necessarily out-sell the 360, and that's what was required till 2008.

Its now going to be a price war between the PS3 and Xbox 360...remember you do not get bluray\HD-DVD or wireless built into the Xbox 360..and the xbox live service is $50 a year. This all all conspire to bring down the Microsoft House of cards that is the Xbox 360.

Microsoft can not retool the Xbox 360 to include the HD-DVD and make it work with games since it would fracture its userbase.

Its already been proven that the a gamming console be viable for over 7 years...look at the PS2...it sold more in a week than the Xbox 360!!!

So Sony's longterm plan for the PS3, the 10 year plan is a good plan...in 3 years the PS3 will be selling for $149 and there will be so many totally awesome games out by then..that it will dominate.

What I find interesting is not that PS3 outsold 360, but it's the software sales.

360 has the bigger attach rate, the more hardcore following, and their owners like to purchase games, if this somewhat accurate reflection of sales worldwide, too see for example Assassin Creed for Ps3 out selling the 360 counterpart, yet having the "smaller" userbase, is interesting (I'm taking about this week), and not total as 360 has the advnatage.

Uncharted is sold better this week worldwide than a game like Mass effect.

Need for Speed, WWE smackdown, PES 2008, is all on the back of european sales, out doing it's 360 counterparts.

It shall be interesting if this will be kept up in the new year when spending is down...

As long as the ps3 has a sufficient install base to attract the vast majority of developpers im satisfied with my choice. (so far its moving in the right direction)

We also have exclusives games from sony studios (which was the 3rd biggest studio in term of employees behind EA and UBI - before the recent mergers)

ps3 is the future...all it needs is another price cut and it'll sell much better. everyone keeps saying how bad the ps3 sold in it's first year. but if you look at the circumstances you'd know there is a very high demand for the system. it was hugely over priced in it's first six month, there weren't any games for it and of course it was competing with two other system, one with better games and another with an innovative controller and half the price.

it doesn't really matter if the ps3 continues to be the most expensive system out there. what really matters is for the price to be accepted by both hardcore and casuals as a reasonable price for a video game system.with the 2008 software lineup and a another price cut ps3s will be flying of shelfs in record time.

the real question is not whether it will sell more than the 360. it's whether it can compete with the wii.

But there mainly off on ps3 numbers by lowering them.. If you look at everything the ps3 is doing really well in software and hardware sells.. Actually sold more in both hardware and software. People keep saying no one buys ps3 games but if you look, ps3 actaully outsells the 360 on some multi plat games and is on par with some multi plat games. And the ps3 has half the install base as the 360. Thats saying a lot right there..

It is funny how most commenters here missed the fact that the software list is only for "others" aka Europe and Australia. VGChartz adds the other data as they get them, usually the software numbers for Japan and America are later than the European numbers.

So hold your horses, the 360 software numbers will move up in front of the PS3 software numbers once the US software sales are put in the list.
And that is plain logic considering the install base *rolleyes*

And would you please stop all teh VGChartz bashing? YES it is not dead accurate, sales numbers are never dead accurate, even the holy cow of the US sales, NPD, is only in a 10% corridor of the REAL numbers.

At least VGChartz offers a FREE service of such numbers worldwide, a service you won't get anywhere else.

The real numbers will be offered when the income sheets of the companies drop by in late march. Please keep in mind that VGChartz was LESS than 3% off the PS3 official Numbers last business year. Just click on the details for "US" and "Japan" and you will see that they only have the numbers till 16th up there, hence they are missing the software numbers from that regions. The hardware numbers where done separate to hand out some fanboy ammunition :p

Sony earns it's place with each and every generation. I love everything about Playstation 3, some things I never even anticipated to enjoy. Remember this moment 5 years from now. It will be one hell of a ride. On a side note: The dualshock 3 is PERFECTION....all you do is connect it and it automatically gets assigned a controller number. So I guess when we see hard December NPD #'s, then add up Mediacreates weekly sales #'s for Decemeber, then throw in the *estimates from vg chartz for Europe, we'll find out in reality if the ps3 *actually did outsell the 360 for December or will it be like November all over again.

notice I said if sony wants to catch up to 360 "over the next year", therefore its just simple mathematics of what ps3 needs to outsell the 360 by to accomplish this task

according to vg chartz, which sonykids all over a sudden love

360= 15,691,972
ps3= 8,408,827
difference= 7,283,145 divide by 12 mo.= 606,928.75

therefore lets say the 360 doesn't sell one console in 2008, ps3 would need to avg 606,928 each month in order for ps3 to catch 360 by the end of 2008. yeah you may say well ps3 sold 8.4 mil in its first year but roughly half of those sales were accumalated during its launch sales for both US(Nov-Dec 06) and Europe(Mar-April), outside of those months there were several months like Sept where ps3 wasn't even at 300k worldwide, also somehow I dont think micro will bar retailers from selling 360's for all of 2008 as suggested in this scenario.

do you remember that "little" time frame between november and march in Europe that the PS3 WASN'T released??? In that 5 month the ps3 could have sold a lot more than in launch time, so even without that 5 months in Europe (where the ps3 is selling better than 360 anyway) it managed to sold that 8+ millions.............so what make you think that the next year with all the regions active, and the biggest franchises and games coming out (and maybe even another pricedrop) the ps3 will not sell a lot more than this 8+ millions????

because I can remember just recently even with ps3 being already released for awhile now its still had months where ps3 *worlwide totals was around 300k, with the 360 easily selling that alone in the US, I think ps3 was hovering around 300k worldwide for Aug/Sept timeframe, (I dont feel like adding the weekly vg chartz sales for the exact figure but you're welcome to) either way, what many are forgetting is these recent sales are high for everybody because of the holidays, it will be interesting to see what will be the normal avg's are month to month, but I definitely don't expect to see ps3 outselling the 360 by *large* margin worldwide next year,...judging even by this info it hasn't done it so far even with the ps3 recent price drop and the normal highs of the holidays, and remember micro has NOT *had to drop their price AGAIN, like sony was forced to do.

You don't consider many things just like before... The 360 this year had a great line-up because it was on it's second year and it showed up it's big guns, in the same time, the ps3 was just released and non in the same time world wide, it was accused of everithing, big price, no games, blu ray etc etc, and the truly good games start arriving this September (excluding resistance and motorstorm that are already great games) but this games had to compete with the Microsoft's biggest exclusive....Halo 3 so it's logical i think that this year was intended to be the 360's momentum....BUT even with all this things in favor of the 360, the PS3 managed to sell very well worlwide outselling the first year of the 360 i think with all this bad press the so called "no games" and etc. And at a higher price and in competition i would add also, so saying that this is not a good result and that the trend now is not more pro ps3 than pro 360 is a little...foolish i think. And by the way, the ps3 dropped the price not only because it was forced to do so, but also because the blu ray diodes that at the begginig was costing a lot, now dropped drasticaly, so if first it was like 100$ i heard, now it's 10$ read somewhere and also other components now cost less also. The 360 don't need for now to do a price drop because it already costs less, and also you now Microsoft is greedy and they like the money, after a 6 year of being in red with the xbox division they finally can enjoy some profit, the ps3 now still make loss, it's true, but there is a "little" thing called PS2 that is still selling like hot cakes and represent a lot of profit with it 125 mill+ and still growing userbase, also the psp make profit and it's selling very well for quite some time. So as you see (i hope you see the logical things) The next year should be a great year for PS3 because only a NON GAMER and a FOOLISH fanboy would say that games like MGS4, FFXIII, Gran Turismo 5, Little Big Planet, Killzone 2 and other great games, are not worth buying a PS3, 3 of this games are franchises that defined some genres and made the history of the videogames in their way...even if you don't like some of that genres you can't negate the general picture, i for myself don't like raing games and stealth, but i give the credit to games like GT 5 and MGS 4 because i know a lot of my friends that can't wait to have them (and i also read many forums in internet and i see the general tastes of the people) instead i'm lost without a FF game because i like very much jrpg's, and so a lot of my friends here in europe. PS3 IS a true multimedia hub and offers the ONLY true next gen experience that no other console on the market can duplicate. It runs RINGS around the 360, red ones (lol), and ALLOWS the wii to obtain a piece of the market. 360 software sales: 2.97m
PS3 software sales: 1.84m
Total software sales: 15.79m

Now look at what's been reported so far for the week ending 12/22/07:

360 software sales: 0.96m
PS3 software sales: 1.02m
Total software sales: 7.42m

It's obvious that the US and possibly other regions have not yet been added into these figures (unless you believe game sales dropped by 50% right before Christmas). They'll change drastically once we have the entire picture.

mmm... now... if the xbox 360 is beating the PS3 in the US by 2... as is being doing... and this is december so, sales are very high... that means that the xbox 360 outsold the PS3 by hundreds of thousands...

mmm... geee... all of the sudden these numbers do not look so great for Sony and the PS3... since it obviously shows that the PS3 is only beating the xbox 360 worldwide excluding the US only by 20K.... but lossing worldwide when you include the US by hundreds of thousands...

This is why the numbers looked funny... this is why the PS3 software numbers looked so wrong...

Bluntly said, but true. Well, half true. Software figures not added. But the hardware figures are global if you look again. I said it with my second comment that its illogical to say a system with a smaller userbase outsold a system with a bigger userbase on software sold in just a week.

According to VGChartz, the PlayStation 3 has outsold the Xbox 360 in hardware figures during the past week.

You got it wrong. The article takes into consideration hardware sales from the United States, but it doesn't seem to take into consideration software sales (that is the assumption).

So no one has excluded hardware sales from any region. Where did you get the impression that it was?

This is the same N4G only VGcharts isn't it? So I would guess they "don't" take in account the US data just like what Bladestar said. Each and every month when NPD shows a considerable differance between 360 and PS3 in NA, that "always" closes the EU gap and surpasses it by hundreds of thousands. Maybe I just don't understand celebrating "proven" false data time and time again. I have never supported VGC and have always reported news from the site when I can. They are as unreliable as Michael Pachter and that is pretty darn bad, I don't even know why that guy has a job.

We're talking about this VGChartz article. Because of the source, no one will claim it to be final hardware figures (for the US, as European numbers are never released) as we wait for the NPD group to confirm them. But we're discussing this article and its connotations, not its accuracy. So for that matter, I don't understand why Bladestar is saying US hardware figures are being left out and that is why the PS3 is out-selling the 360 by only 20,000, and that when the US figures are added, the 360 will be outselling the PS3 by hundreds of thousands.

The US figures are already taken into account. I don't think he noticed this.

However, the subject matter of who outsold who will be talked about in sincerity when the NPD figures are released. That is when either the Sony fanboys will be silenced or when they're voice be loudened. Until then, all we have is this and it shows the PS3 outsold the 360 on the week ending on the 22nd.

I can admit that there is evidence to suggest they are not the final numbers, that they could be released soon, but the article shows what we see and thats what I formed my opinion on. However, one thing I will not accept is the idea that I'm photoshopping something.

But based on the past, don't you think they have a point? It's not as if they are lieing or anything or that the numbers don't actualy end up in the 360's favor. Actualy they always end up in the Wii favor but for some reason Xbox and PS fanboys always discredit the Wii. the fact that it also has, at *LEAST, 5 really quality games available for it at the moment doesnt' hurt

This is good news for PS3 no matter what. How many previous months did VGChartz have the PS3 beating the 360? None. So whether or not the numbers are completely accurate something is happening to close the gap between PS3 and 360 sales. As a PS360 owner competition is going to breed better games for both systems. So I hope PS3 catches on and gets the support the 360 has had for the last 2 years. No more excuses w/ a great built in blu ray player, great exclusives, and a respectible install base of 8 Mil. So IMO if you own only one of the systems this is good news because it's going to raise the bar for all systems which means better games for both. Competition is good.

Frankly, I'm kinda scared of Nintendo. They're starting to get a monopoly on their hands, and it's not for the right reasons IMO. I have a Wii and PS3, and I get MUCH more enjoyment out of my PS3. I even play my friends' 360s more than I play my Wii. And obviously Mario, Zelda, and Metroid aren't the reasons it's selling, because they had those same games last gen with the Cube and it didn't dominate then. I just really hope Wii sales will slow down enough for the others to catch up.
