Not-So Uncharted Territory: Tomb Raider Hands-On Impressions | Games Abyss

Matt Randisi writes, "Lara Croft has had quite a bit of gossip surrounding her ever since the first trailer for her big reboot was revealed; most notably concerning if a Tomb Raider game in this day and age be able to succeed in a genre ruled by the high king himself, Nathan Drake. Problem? People seem to be judging this based on how different Crystal Dynamic’s iteration will be from Naughty Dog’s kingpin. Solution? Don’t! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, molds don’t have to be broken for a great game to emerge from the proverbial ashes; especially when it’s a reboot of a franchise that has spent quite a bit of time in ashes. After spending some time with the game I can say with confidence that Tomb Raider is in actuality strikingly similar to an Uncharted title in several ways; this however is not necessarily a bad thing."

Instead of comparing both games try to enjoy both for what they are , that's what im gonna do

Nykamari4198d ago

I agree, but people are going to compare like always.

bubblebeam4198d ago

"Instead of comparing both games try to enjoy both for what they are........"

From what I saw at E3, the new Tomb Raider looks like a falling down simulator lol. May as well make a game where she tumbles down a mountain for 3 hours.

In all seriousness though, I agree. People these days are so hellbent on comparing a game to another game. Before Bulletstorm was out, the guy at my local game store said it was a cross between Gears of War and Borderlands. LOLOLOLOLOL. How the FACK does that work?

People need to start seeing games for what they are.

Cam9774198d ago

You're right! The last big one was with Mw3 and BF3, now, I can see it being the same for this. It needs to stop.

I would rather they stuck to doing their own thing than completely ripping off uncharted.
I played the Tomb Raider demo and it was practically just a re-skin.
Very disappointing.

Although I prefer to take and enjoy the game as it is like IDeath said, I think there's going to be somewhat of a blow-back war from both sides of fans of the Uncharted and Tomb Raider series: Uncharted fans who had to endure the unjustified "Dude Raider" moniker from Tomb Raider fans, and from Tomb Raider fans who now realize that the only possible successful iteration of Tomb Raider this Gen may come from a game that greatly resembles the technical aspects of the Uncharted series.

I don't want to say "Turnabout is fair play" because it's going to be in the form of revenge for some (I don't like that because it's just copied game parameters anyways), but I'd rather chock it up to "What's good for the goose is good for the gander" in that if Uncharted fans had to endure it when the games weren't even similar enough to legitimize the name calling, it won't kill Tomb Raider fans to endure the same ribbing when the games are similar enough to warrant it.

I'm a fan of both games, by the way.

SAE4198d ago (Edited 4198d ago )

Let's say the game is a rip off even though it looks a survival game from the videos , do you hate uncharted ? you should be excited for getting a game like uncharted on all platforms , it looks stunning and promising , they just need to make us play more and put a lots of puzzles

it's not necessary a bad thing to achieve what uncharted did , think of it as a reboot if you can't see it as a tomb raider game ^^ , they are trying to do something new in the series with that kind of graphics and gameplay ...

i for one will think of it as a revolve to the the series because it does look different then the others but it gives a special impression for the survival story , it doesn't remind me of uncharted because of that , the only part that remind me of it is the climbing , that's it , we can't judge the game from few videos so when i play it and finish then i will judge it if it's a clone or not ...

it's like comparing bioshock to dishonored or skyrim for having powers in your left hands ...

HarryMasonHerpderp4197d ago

I don't want Tomb Raider to be like Uncharted though.
Uncharted is an amazing series but I want more exploring, puzzles and freedom in my Tomb Raider games.

vikingland14198d ago

I like the UC series and the TR series. I am sure I will like this TR even if it is alot like UC. They seem to be making Lara more human I thought she was allways a kind of a cold character.

pixelsword4198d ago

"Cold" and "Educated British female" tends to go hand-in-hand in the realm of European stereotypes.

Cam9774198d ago

Haha, exactly - you see that alot in films too.

uncharted clone.

And to the lara fangirls plz shush....play the originals TB till underworld or legend then play uncharted, now that u did that see this new tomb raider and see uncharted....clearly if someone copy another thats crytsal dynamics end of story.

this game looks more uncharted than uncharted did (if it ever did)with the old TB games.

The Best Tomb Raider Games Ranked

We've gone on many adventures with Lara Croft. With another reboot in the making, Wealth of Geeks felt it was a good time to go down the nostalgia rabbit hole and remember the best of those tomb-raiding thrills.

I do agree that Tomb Raider Angel of Darkness was the worse one 😂 I remember playing some of it and I took it back. That game was just awful in every way. I bought it used at gamestop and glad they had that 7 day return policy for used games 😂

Pyrofire9560d ago

Would it be worth saying why?

ZeekQuattro60d ago

Simple. He's been hating on the Tomb Raider reboots for years. I can't imagine seeing them at the top of a best TR game list let alone being on the list in general sitting well with him because of it.

-Foxtrot60d ago

Zeek

“Hating”

No no, just pointing out how TR mutated into a generic action adventure game losing the appeal of what it once was when it was more about puzzles and platforming over going Rambo, slaughtering waves of enemies

But hey, continue being a dick and speaking about me like I’m not going to see the comment.

MeatyUrologist59d ago

Foxtrot, I'm curious if you have played the most recent games. Sure the 2013 reboot was hugely focused on combat, but each follow up became less and less about combat to the point where outside of a few large scale story missions I don't even remember combat being a part of shadow of the tomb raider. Shadow was so puzzle focused it actually was a bit much for me and I love the TR puzzles.

I still feel like Rise was the best of the series and I was a huge fan of the originals. To me it struck the perfect balance of exploration, platforming, puzzles, and combat. Not saying your opinion is wrong I'm just curious what you think they should have done different. Games do need to evolve somewhat to stay relevant. Would you prefer small linear jumping platform levels like the original?

RavenWolfx60d ago

I would agree Rise for 1 and the reboot as 2. Shadow is a bit high, though.

Sonic188160d ago (Edited 60d ago )

I think Shadow wasn't even develop by crystal dynamics. I thought it was the worse in the new trilogy

Pyrofire9560d ago

That's right. Shadow was developed by Eidos Montreal who who went and made Marvels Guardians of the Galaxy next. (Great game)
Meanwhile after Rise of the Tomb Raider, Crystal Dynamics made Marvels Avengers. (bad game)

MeatyUrologist60d ago

Agrees. First two are correct but Shadow should be around 5-6.

terstomp60d ago

For me, Legend should be alot higher (along with the other two ). Shadow, I enjoyed it, but has too much has fluff, as modern games tend to do. Playing the remastered series, and apart from the controls, is very good.

jznrpg60d ago

I really enjoyed the first 2 games, Legend and the first of the reboots and the rest I didn’t get into so I never finished.

robtion60d ago

Completely subjective list. I really liked Underworld, I preferred Lara's design. That said I loved the horror/uncharted feel of the reboot. I think all the TR games have strengths and weaknesses. None are objectively better in every way.
