GamesBeat: Developers team up with scientists to help make 'smarter' games (interview)

GamesBeat's Giancarlo Valdes: "If you’ve ever magically combined herb plants into pills in Resident Evil 6 or wondered how Max Payne could survive shoving a ton of painkillers down his throat, then you realize that video games aren’t known for their sound representation of science. But for most of them, that’s fine! Like books, movies, and TV shows, they require some suspension of disbelief.

"But those that do base their fictions off of real-world research could use some improvement. That’s where the group of scientists working at Thwacke come in."

Very, very interesting. A game that loosely adheres to the rules of science. Shocking!

Probably bc the game is in polishing faze. Non news.

phoenixwing373d ago (Edited 373d ago )

It's interesting news to me. But for ppl invested in console wars its probably boring. Basically the quests for starfield will be very close in ideas to whatever inxile is working on now that she'll be there.

Edit: as long as it's the same genre. Also it tells me whatever inxile is working on involves quests which I'm happy about.

IamTylerDurden1371d ago (Edited 371d ago )

I said non news bc i imagined some would say it's a bad sign for Starfield. I play mostly xb now...

And InXile already has experience in the Fallout wing essentially. They currently make a Fallout spiritual successor as well. They are familiar with this style but rather in a top down form.

InXile always has quests..........

RaidenBlack372d ago (Edited 372d ago )

Maybe inXile's future Fallout spin-off ? 🤞🏻 (apart from the current steampunk RPG ofcourse)
(one can only hope, since inXile was originally consisted of ex-Interplay & Black Isle devs, who worked on the OG 1980s Wasteland and 1990s Fallout 1&2 games)

shinoff2183372d ago

Inxile has a steam punk rpg coming?

If true that's dope af. I always enjoyed their wasteland games I'm sure other stuff they've made to that I can't think of.

Christopher372d ago

It's a lateral move anyway (both under the same umbrella). But makes me wonder what InXile is doing more than anything.

Workshyskiver373d ago

This site really is obsessed with individuals moving companies. Its an unfortunate truth in almost all industries that you can improve your terms and remuneration by moving rather than staying put.

Bobertt373d ago

Yeah but for game developers they usually get a big bonus once a game is released so one leaving this late in development could reflect that they don't think it will turn out well enough for the bonus to be worth sticking around for.

rpvenom372d ago

As an ex tech recruiter, that's not necessarily true. They can easily get a sign on bonus from the new company that would roughly match what they would've received should the game turn out successful.

Zeref372d ago

They're still at Xbox. Pretty good chance they'll still get a bonus since the salary is handled by Microsoft.

XbladeTeddy372d ago

Or they just wanted a change because change is good.

dumahim372d ago

Unfortunate? Seems pretty damn good for people to step back and try new things now and then. Maybe company B offered them more money for doing mostly what they were doing with company A.

IamTylerDurden1371d ago

That's why i said non news bc i knew ppl would view it as a negative. Starfield is done and InXile is a former Fallout dev and MS first party. This ain't really shit.

XiNatsuDragnel373d ago

Maybe inXile has a big goat project that's going to be hype

phoenixwing373d ago (Edited 373d ago )

That would be cool. I hope it's medieval fantasy or steam renaissance. Something set in olden days. Not that I wouldn't play something with advanced tech but I prefer the former.

AgitUzumaki373d ago

There are some rumors that they are developing a steampunk type of game.

Obscure_Observer373d ago

"I hope it's medieval fantasy or steam renaissance."

Possibly both. Rumors are that InXile is working on two RPGs. One is an established IP and the other is a new steampunk AAA RPG.

shinoff2183372d ago

I'd prefer almost a future steampunk kind of setting. I personally just feel the olden days especially medieval games are a dime a dozen there's so many. Not to say I wouldn't play it

CrimsonWing69373d ago

I don’t know if game journalists know this, but it’s quite normal for people in the industry to move between companies. Hell, some are only contracted for a single game and have to find another job after the project is finished.

Surprised you didn’t do an article about the Devil May Cry battle director jumping ship from Capcom to Square Enix

dumahim372d ago

"I don’t know if game journalists know this, but it’s quite normal for people in the industry to move between companies."

So they shouldn't report on it? I don't know if you know, but it's quite normal for a news article to just be news.

CrimsonWing69372d ago

The more you know, amirite?

Thundercat77373d ago

Another one leaving Xbox 😯.

In a few years Xbox's Bethesda is going to be a shadow of their former group just like Rare.

gangsta_red372d ago (Edited 372d ago )

"Another one leaving Xbox 😯."

Leaving Xbox to join Xbox? Not the flex I think you want here.

Workshyskiver372d ago

Lol you do realise he is going to another Xbox Game Studios?

Wasteland 3 was great.
Interested in seeing what they'll do with a new IP.

hotnickles529d ago (Edited 529d ago )

Fallout. It’s not a new IP, it’s a new “very ambitious” license. That or a marvel game. A turn based children of the atom X-men game.

New teasers for SCORN and inXile's Next-Gen Unreal Engine 5 RPG

Ebb Software shared a teaser video for its H.R. Giger-inspired game, SCORN. On the other hand, inXile Entertainment shared a screenshot from its next-gen Unreal Engine 5 RPG.

O.o

Omg! Looks awesome!

The atmosphere reminds of Hexen and Gothic! inXile´s transition to AAA realm seems smooth and coming along fine.

Here´s hoping for an amazing, unique, strong and successful new Xbox IP.

With Scorn set to be released in October, and Starfield in November, we already have 2 new Xbox games confirmed.

MetalGearsofWar727d ago

Let's be honest here, Scorn may not live up to the hype.

phoenixwing727d ago

So the screenshot is from bard's tale iv as sited by an update. So there's no image to go on. In exile must be very far from finishing the game if they can't even post an image and or concept art

Eonjay727d ago (Edited 727d ago )

With the move to Unreal Engine 5 I'm not surprised. It funny how Square announced that KH4 was going from UE4 to UE5 because that announcment by itself bought them about 3 years. And more to the point, another game of similar scope, Quantum Error, also has seen a smiliar delay and has also made the jump to UE5. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Fortnite the only legit UE5 game to be releasd? And that game doesn't even use UE5s biggest visual features. (Edit: I think UE5 is for their next game and not Scorn?)

If you like it that much you're in luck, you can play it now cause it's from a bards tale 4.

SCORN... I forgot all about that. Seems like forever ago that was shown off for XB.

Flawlessmic727d ago

Hope im wrong but scorn has got bust written all over it.

Im sure ill receive a ton of downvotes cause no will want to admit it but yea i dont have high hopes for it even if it does look cool.

Hopefully im wrong though

Gaming4Life1981727d ago

I agree and I never had high hopes for scorn either but I think it looks good from what I've seen. I hope it's good especially after the long delay but we will have to wait and see.

Orbilator727d ago

I want Scorn to be great to, I like the giger esq setting.
It's been a long time coming and it may be to slow for some but I hope it's ok as I been waiting a looooong time for it to get released.

StarkR3ality727d ago

Yeah the art style looks straight outta Alien which is immense, but beyond that it's like, well what we actually doing here for a game?

It's a shame and I'd love to be proved wrong, but can't see it being any good.

Lightning77727d ago

I dunno about Scorn. Tbh I personally don't care for the game. I just think there's gonna be better games around that time and I think the game could get largely overlooked.

NXile is already showing a teaser for its next game. I didn't think they were that far along actually.

HeliosHex727d ago

Jesus I feel like scorn has been in development for 10 yrs. The last demo I saw a few yrs ago left much to be desired. I think we might have another agony here.

phoenixwing727d ago

I don't think it can be as bad as that game lol but I will say the gameplay itself is very average with a gloss of art direction. Unfortunately I'm creeped out by the organic tech art direction so I'll sit this one out.

I am looking forward to inxile and there game though

0hMyGandhi727d ago

I was just going to say that I thought this game came out, but I was thinking of "Agony".
Wow. It's honestly surreal that Scorn hasn't come out yet.
