PlayStation 3 Owners Revolt Over Firmware Update 4.30

I don't think it's the inclusion of the game -- or, indeed, the icon -- that's causing the issue. I think most people are fine with the addition of SingStar to the XMB -- but I think it's the placement of the icon that's getting people down. For example, if you don't have a Blu-ray inserted, the PS3 defaults to showing SingStar. And it also creates a barrier between the disc and your PSN games. That is a teensy bit frustrating.

As suggested in the article, the problem could be solved if the icon was moved to the Music section of the XMB.

Well, maybe they will at a later date. Clearly Sony want to promote Singstar (which isn't for everyone) but who can blame them. They provide AAA titles on a regular basis and give us 44 games a year plus discounts on PS+. I for one think that Sony deserves some understanding here.

If you buy a used game for the tracks you don't need the Icon. If you don't buy a disc (or tracks in the store) the Icon is useless. So as an argument pro icon because it is free that doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Why? I can get Singstar games for £3. One of the secondary arguments against this icon on some of the forums I frequent is the necessity to buy tracks online. I'm just offering an alternative for those who want to get a full collection of tracks for a few quid rather than buying each track at a premium.

I think the point that Kuv1977 was making is if you do buy a disc for £3, there's not need for the icon to be there in the first place because, well, you bought the disc.

There IS a reason for the Icon to be there. Those that use Singstar and enjoy it are less likely to complain about the icon. These people will gladly buy each track from the store once they are aware of its existence. You have to understand that many of these people don't bother to download new tracks because they're not aware the store exists. Having to download it means they'll more likely move to online distribution and so actually discover the store.

The people who are complaining the most are your core/hardcore gamer, who find it intrusive because they have little interest in Singstar. For these people, the argument invariable goes: 'It's intrusive and I have to buy tracks anyway, so it's not actually free.' Well, my alternative, whilst not inexhaustible, is at least an answer for these people. It's not an answer to their gripes, but it reduces the two fold problem by one.

Bare in mind that this version of Singstar is a better version of the one you get on discs; which are not upgradeable.

is there such a thing as having a default icon on the PS3 xmb? Im in the US so i cant experience what EU people are seeing but I can say that when I turn on my PS3 it varies what icon it defaults to.

In most cases it defaults to whatever was the las app I was using. I turned it on this morning and after boot up the icon it landed on was joe danger which happened to be the last game i played when i shut down prior.

i think before that it started on the netflix icon because i was watching netflix before that. So I really am asking if what people are seeing is in fact a default that will always be this singstar regardless of the previous shutdown.

And honestly, when mine starts up and i see the background for whatever it was last i had done, i move the screen to what i want to do and the background changes to that.

It says 835 people (at the time or writing I assume) are complaining.
Im just taking 60 million ps3 sales (just for arguments sake, I dont really care what the actual number is).

Actually I am one of the guys who plays Singstar fairly regularly and I have been wondering for a long time why they didn't put out a free app like this. They wouldn't lose any money because I would still have to buy tracks and I would still need some mics. Also I have about 120 bought songs and only ever used the discs for starting the game and then navigated around the disc tracks I did not want in the first place but needed to start the game. So basically I am pro free-Singstar.

However, I still don't get why they couldn't offer a free download in the store where you can then choose the icon to be in whichever folder you like but instead insist on putting it into everyone's face. Why choose an option that is guaranteed to make everyone happy when you can have an option that annoys at least part of your fan base, right? Now while I personally can live with that I also understand why people would be upset about starting the PS3, not having a game inside, and then having to look at the terrible promoshot of people wearing goofy clothes and especially the guy who apparently sings through his teeth. But it is just one more inconsistency in the XMB-UI (others being app-backdrops of extremely varying quality and style).

I can see where not being able to delete the icon could be mildly irritating, and you should be able to delete it, but it's still a pretty small matter. People are actually acting outraged and becoming verbally abusive over it. That's what is ridiculous.

It's not just an icon. It dons't just say "SS" it's a full length SingStar and it's the longest icon on the PS3's XMB.

The new update has pissed me off real bad , it's changed my xmb to 720p which pans the screen resulting in the youtube app being sub HD now , before the update I had 1080i which had the best aspect and all apps such as youtube , browser and iplayer all fitted on the screen perfectly therefore the detail in the image was there. I could remove the 720p option in settings but that would mean that I'd have to keep changing it everytime I want to play a game or watch a HD youtube vid . Is anyone else having the same problem ?

What I want to see is the default "reinstalled" XMB icons are grouped inside a folder or invisible if I never run them. They are just empty icons anyway without the app. Sony is trying too hard trying to get us to use many of their online apps and think if they put the empty shell icons all over the XMB, users will use them. I understand what you are saying and a "revolt" can be considered going too far, but this is not just about the icon's placement. People complained on the blog, Nina Scherer (meant to be a professional Sony PR rep) gave out borderline offensive responses and cheeky replies to people who were requesting them to take down the icon or give us a choice to remove it ourselves. Instead of acknowledging these complaints, she openly mocked gamers and ignored the issue as if paying customers' opinions are not relevant.

There was no "I'll look into it", or anything. She said something along the lines of "it's not going away so get used to it". PR reps can't do things like that and not expect elevated levels of annoyance.

The revolt is going really far and all I did was complain, but not only is the icon annoying and something that is forced, but the way in which it was handled was poor, unacceptable and unprofessional.

I have heard enough rudeness on the Blog to realize that even when the person talking tries to be reasonable or respectful people don't do the same. Singstar isn't even on my PS3, I don't know why. Only thing that changed is the trophy icon that goes to network. It doesn't even bother me. As for the thing that is loaded by default when I have no disc? It's the last game I played.

Singstar I got no comment. I personally have the game, so I am not quite bothered if it is there or not. But I do not understand the rage over the placement of Trophies icon. In fact I like how it is now as I see it more like an improvement than anything else. Defaulted as online mode for the trophy is a nice thing. Dont need to sync almost every freaking time I launch the trophy which usually take forever to complete (and some times even end up with an error and had to resync again). Then they also included the offline mode which is switchable if people still prefer toe old school method of how the trophies are being handled (which personally I find no reason to go back to unless there's a special reason to). Also moving the trophies to PSN section as oppose to keeping it at game section makes complete sense. Trophies are suppose to be part of PSN, especially given that now it has an online mode which is an integration to the network system. So I dont see why the fuss. But in any case people will find anything to complain about. Since you can never satisfy everyone in whatever you do.

I think it was just Sony advertising, the only problem is their PS3 XMB isn't as streamlined and updated like Xbox.

Xbox OS is full of advertisments all over on every page, they just don't have to push firmware updates to shove it in your face.

Expect PS4 to have better streamlined advertising in its OS.

Only just now found it out but you can no longer browse the XMB while playing music.

I frequently use the PS3 as my music player since it's hooked up to the best speakers I have and to not be able to browse for the next track while one is playing is what pissed me off the most.

And singstar. How can they go so wrong with one update?

To be honest i didnt even notice Singstar on the XMB until now, to those who despise singstar, just ignore it. Im not a fan of singstar myself but thats what ill be doing from now on stop complaining so much ppl.

rather than switch where the trophies are listed why not permanently sync them like xbox does so i dont have to wait 10 minutes of loading everytime i get 5 trophies. and wanna check them. furthermore. why must i manually check them why cant they copy xbox yet again and give u the option that wen the trophy icon pops up u can press the PS button and it will take u right to the trophy list?
seriously sony all ur ideas regarding updates are total shit the last meaningful update was 2.41

I can understand perfectly why so many people are complaining. And whilst my own playstation(US) does not have this icon yet I will be no less pissed myself if it ever does. Let me explain. How many here have ever bought a brand new computer only to be appaled by the amount of bloatware that comes pre-installed? See where I am going with this? People are mad because it is pointless and they don't need it. Even if you want to play Singstar you can by the disk or download it like everything else. How many hardcore FPS fans out there would be outraged if Sony took the liberty of installing an icon for Final Fantasy or LBP? Plenty I am sure. I myself love most genres of games but that's beside the point. I don't want or like nor have I ever asked for any un-necessary icons to be installed on my PS3. I don't even like the fact that there is an extra store icon under my video menu. I don't need that either! Neither of these are really that annoying but that don't matter. These things should be gaged by their necessity and demand. I fail to see enough of both. The trophies icon also should have been left the hell alone. If I had but one request for Sony it would be to either make shit better, or leave it alone and stop this useless maneuvering.
