Top 10 Scariest Games to Play on Halloween

Halloween, for most of us gamers its just another holiday where bad movies are shown on cable. Forget that and forget handing out some candy. Lock yourself in a dark room and join Goozernation on a quest to play some of the scariest games ever. It’s going to be hard to make a top 10 list about this. Where do I start? Silent Hill 1? Resident Evil 3? What about Siren and Fatal Frame? The list could go on and on.

I'd love to go through Dead Space 1 again to celebrate Halloween but I know I couldn't do so without getting a little depressed over the direction the franchise is taking. When the game first came out, I fell in love. It gave me the classic Resident Evil feel that I had been missing for so long. Then the second one came out and while still good, it was more action and less horror than its predecessor. Now with the third installment we seem to have even more focus on action, massive amounts of ammunition, and co-op among other fright-killers.
I hate to keep rambling on but GAH! It really irritates me when the potential for excellence is sacrificed to "appeal to a wider audience."

Find the original Fatal Frame wait till midnight. Turn your TV up so it's as loud as when you watch action movies.

And prepare to be scared..really scared.

In fact, you many not make it 20 minutes into the game before you drop the comtroller in fear.

I did this expiriment for year and a majoritiy of the people couldnt do it.

alan wake? you cant be serious :D

Article said:

"This game feeds off its creepy atmosphere."

and i have too agree, a game dosnt have to feature blood and grueling deaths to be scary.

Venoxn4g4191d ago (Edited 4191d ago )

atmosphere yes, it's great, but game is far from being scary.. I liked the phrase in a artice "some are saying that its more scarier than Silent Hill" :D nooo way :) and no Fatal frame in list!!!

r214191d ago

Agreed, Alan Wake isnt that scary compared to the likes of Amnesia, Siren or Condemned :L

Gamescares4191d ago

Alan Wake could be damn creepy and had an amazing atmosphere, did you play it alone in the dark at night? Thought not.

jc485734191d ago

I'd rather play Deadly Premonition.

EVILDEAD3604191d ago

You clearly never played Alan Wake. Game is one of the most authentic horror experiences out there.

It's not the scariest of them all, but it had the goods.

Alan Wake is a psychological thriller designed for the intellectual.

Those who question it's relevance in a topic entitled "Top 10 Scariest Games to Play on Halloween" clearly don't have the intellectual capability to comprehend Alan Wake's scary tones.

Some people prefer the straight up, non-thinking gore as their preference as to what is scary like Firday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Streets, but understand there are many scare movies that are not all about the mindless violence and monsters. Silence of the Lambs is a great example of this because of it's intellectual level in which the story was being told.

I love Dead Space 1&2 but they are not scary.

Pintheshadows4191d ago

I'd go for Codemned or Amnesia.

Speaking of Codemned, where is 3? I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I know this will sound strange, but in my personal opinion, the 3rd act of Uncharted was the horror game of the generation.

Yeah, I know, it's not a horror game, but from "Unwelcome Guests" onward through the next few chapters the game managed to be terrifying without relying on either jump scares or bad controls. It was just atmospherically frightening, something that most other games just don't do nowadays.

In fact, it was this section of Uncharted that gives me confidence that The Last of Us will live up to expectations.

Kind of a goody story...

On a serious note, that is why I try activating gift cards asap. It's happened to me where the store didnt scan it right where the card was unusuable. Happened at Wally World.

gigoran815h ago

wait, that place is real? national lampoon wasn't kidding?

Knightofelemia16h ago

Usually most of those redemption card have an expiry date on them. If they expired all buyer did was buy recycled paper. And some of those codes are country locked to certain countries. I buy a card from the States I can't use it in Canada.

Chocoburger13h ago

Dumb and silly story. She wasted her money for no reason.

Is it really that hard to go to Steam or GOG. She spent $240, when its currently 70% off on GOG, and only costs $4.49.

Gee, I wonder, should I spend $240 on eBay, or $4.49 on GOG? 🙄

Rynxie8h ago

Most likely she wanted to resell a few or most of them. However, it was a too good to be true situation.

Profchaos10h ago

So in short she paid $240.00 assuming usd for a bunch on unactivated game codes.

I still don't understand why I guess cause there's not a physical version and she wanted something for a collection or art project.

Rynxie8h ago

No, most likely to resell. However, she ended up getting screwed.

Asplundh5h ago

This is Alan Wake 1, it had physical copies.

EA Shoots Down Dead Space 2 Remake Rumors: 'No Validity to This Story'

EA has shut down rumors that EA Motive considered a Dead Space 2 remake before shelving it due to low sales of the previous game, saying there's "no validity" to the reports.

XiNatsuDragnel5d ago

Sure.... right.... at least remake dead space 3 w/o microtransactions bs.

XiNatsuDragnel4d ago

I sometimes I wished I didn't Ngl lol

Knightofelemia5d ago

Why not remake DS2 whether shot down or not it's still my favorite game next to DS1. As much as I hate EA I would buy or would have bought DS2 day one.

MeteorPanda5d ago

No validity XD "Guys guys, we cant possible make a good game or cater to the gamers wants, stop"

Yi-Long5d ago

I don't know if sales met their expectations or not. I just know that the high review scores received my attention so I was interested in buying it, but its price stayed high (50+ bucks) for so long that I simply never bothered picking it up.

Tacoboto5d ago

Doesn't pay full price
Doesn't pay *any* price
Ponders if sales met expectations regarding an allegedly canceled sequel.

Gee...

Yi-Long4d ago

Well, for starters, I'm sure there are plenty of games I never bought which did, somehow, still, meet their sales-expectations.

Concerning Dead Space; I never played and thus cared for the original. It's in multiple genres (shooter, sci-fi, horror) I don't particularly care about so it was barely on my radar pre-launch. I was never its target-audience.

When reviews hit, and it was scoring big, it gathered my interest, so while it wasn't in my field of interest, it mrans that I wanted to give it a fair shot and at least give it a try, as I do with many games across different genres; I tend to just cherry-pick the good stuff and see if it's for me or not.

But, I do wait for sales on those games I take a risk on.

Kornholic4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Lol, you are a huge part of the problem. If a very high-quality game is not even worth 50 bucks to you, then what is?

13 Years Later, Dead Space 2 Is Still A Perfect Video Game

Nameer from eXputer: "Dead Space 2 is a sequel that delivers such a feast that by the time you're done, you're not only full but also satisfied."

Aaroncls725d ago

It was amazing. All 3 DS games game solid for me, but 2 was special.

hombreacabado25d ago

i can do without ds3 but the first two are solid.

mariopasta25d ago

Hope they remake this one too. Just like they did with number 1. The remake of Dead Space 1 was perfection

Terry_B25d ago

thanks to the digital pass for it it was not perfect..in fact its difficult to find a working copy since many years.
