Firaxis talks future XCOM content, 'Slingshot' DLC announced

Joystiq- 2K Games and Firaxis have announced the first downloadable content for XCOM: Enemy Unknown. Entitled "Slingshot," the DLC packs in three new Council missions with a unique story arc. The story takes place in China and, says designer Ananda Gupta, revolves around a "badass Triad operative named Zhang." Said badass will be a playable character and, unlike other XCOM soldiers, will feature a pre-designed face and a unique voice.

We spoke with Gupta and Firaxis producer Garth DeAngelis to learn a little more about the Slingshot DLC and the developer's future plans for XCOM: Enemy Unknown.

Where's the f#$king update? Why is Firaxis talking dlc and not talking game patches?

Perjoss4193d ago

I've pumped well over 50 hours into this and I don't really see the need for an update. What exactly are you having trouble with.

grailly4193d ago

I guess you're playing on pc?
for the ps3 version at least, I had it crash once, and I have a lot of slowdowns.

let's be honest there's also a lot of shooting and seeing through walls going on, on top of the weird camera placement. I don't think these will ever be addressed though.

still one of my favorite games this year, I hope they'll put out some more substantial DLC

I've been playing the past hour or so, and discovered a new, very disturbing bug, for some people the second SHIV you build is unusable. not being able to use my SHIV is really annoying

The_Nameless_One4193d ago

I am playing the pc version and I'm talking about fixing the damn math in this game. I'm so frustrated that 100% shot misses for some odd reason. There are also numerous graphical bugs, mostly concerning floaters. It also wont hurt to fix the damn enemy spawns on escort missions.

@ The_Nameless_One

That's because there is a cap of 95%, I'm not sure if that's a bug or if they intended that nothing should be 100% doable. Either way I do agree that if there is a 95% cap then it should never say 100% hit chance.

Having said that I'm not a blind fanboy even though this is hands down my goty so far, it does have its issues. I play classic ironman and if you don't get any offers for engineers in your first month it can really get hard to keep up with the aliens, seeing as you don't start off with enough engineers to build a workshop.

Engineers are a top priority as you cant really do anything without them, no sat uplinks, no carapace armor and no laser weaps unless you can squeeze 10 engineers in asap.

Hmmm...I don't like the way this is going...

digitalkid4193d ago

I'm a huge fan of Firaxis, Civ5, and all they've done to XCOM, but DLC with 3 missions? No, tnx.

Dovahkiin4193d ago

DLC absolutely needs to become mainly expansions. Sick of little add ons being the norm.

Perjoss4193d ago

Wait until you know the following details before dismissing it: how much is it and how long are the missions.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

S2Killinit171d ago

What other games were inspired by this game?

JL2930171d ago

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183171d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

JL2930170d ago (Edited 170d ago )

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
