Treyarch comes clean: Black Ops didn't "significantly innovate", but Black Ops 2 will

OXM - Call of Duty: Black Ops wasn't the most innovative shooter on the block, Treyarch's Mark Lamia has conceded, but Black Ops 2? It's going to innovate your socks off. Not wearing socks? Say goodbye to your feet.

-Mezzo-4201d ago

Hope they're right this time, and aren't just saying that to take a trip down our Wallets..... again.

CustardTrout4201d ago

I have faith in them, with the dynamic changing story etc, but I've had faith in other companies too...

nrvalleytime4201d ago

Agreed. I don't know if this is a consistent problem with Treyarch, but I hesitate to believe this statement. Wait and see approach seems best here.

supersonicjerry4200d ago

They have added so much I don't see how they can be taking a trip down our wallets. Campaign,Mulitplayer ,and Zombies have so much that no other COD has.

HarryMasonHerpderp4201d ago

Modern Warfare 3 was the COD game made with the least amount of effort.
Really put me off the series.
Hopefully BLOPS 2 will be an improvement.
I think Treyarch have overtaken infinity ward.

Baka-akaB4201d ago (Edited 4201d ago )

Honest ? dunno , they didnt come clean about their previous games . It just happens that ghost IW is just far worse in that regard .

And it's too obvious to deny at this point , espcially after they squeezed everybit of money from those titles already

GraveLord4201d ago

A game doesn't have to be innovative to be fun.
Besides, they never said Black Ops was super innovative. So why does it say that Treyearch is "coming clean"? They're phrasing it like a confession or something.

Gohadouken4201d ago (Edited 4201d ago )

Of course not . But there is such a things as improving your game in sequels even if retaining most of it . Wich Cod does but too sparringly .

People love to draw analogies with sport games , but take football games ... at least when they dont come up with big gameplay changes (wich they still did more often than the cod series) , they at least significantly upgrades their graphics and animations .

Cod ? Not so much , sometimes not even at all . Hell Dynasty Warriors , the king of milking series , had more changes between 5 and 7 than past cod titles .

fermcr4201d ago

2 years from now:

Treyarch comes clean: Black Ops 2 didn't "significantly innovate", but Black Ops 3 will.

4 years from now:

Treyarch comes clean: Black Ops 3 didn't "significantly innovate", but Black Ops 4 will.

... and so on.

seanpitt234201d ago

This is exactly what will happen they say this so you can give them your money and that's what their all bothered about

ProGrasTiNation4201d ago

How are they honest if they come out & say...look last time we lied but this time we are really innovating, these cod devs use the words of activision.
Its gonna be 4 hours of getting your hand held through a mindless no brain game with very little gameplay.
If they made this game require any thought at all the kids would never play it.
Even the multi play has become an unbalanced mess & requires no brain power to play it.

Come november 2014 they will say " we know blops 2 didnt innovate, but blops 3 will." lol

THE_MACGREGOR4201d ago (Edited 4201d ago )

well ill be the first to say this, believe it or not from a COD stand point. Treyarch has really been the ones to innovate the franchise. Sure cod 3 wasnt anything worth noting . However it was the first game that allowed the player to sprint prior to that you had to switch pistols.
Fast forward to 2008 world at war.
Zombies. Allowed for players to differentiate along the competitive gaming routes and engage and help one another while also competiting to survive rounds.
IW did do the same thing the next year in a differ way with Spec Ops ( which is kinda crappy too)
Follow that up With Black Ops
Zombies again with the experience upgraded
as well as wager matches
also combat training to test your skill before alot of you get gang banged online.

mynameisEvil4201d ago

By the way, you know you couldn't actually sprint in Call of Duty 3? Popped it in a minute ago to see, and you can't.

But the rest of your comment is solid, for the most part, soo... :P

SaffronCurse4201d ago (Edited 4201d ago )

You could sprint (In MP)

What exactly is "innovative" about black ops 2? I'd pretty much bet Treyarch claimed the original black ops was innovative too around about this time.

Xbox $70 billion bet paid out

fr0sty248d ago

Guess that's what happens when there's no good new games to play...

4Sh0w248d ago (Edited 248d ago )

Well regardless of exclusives, or whatever else there is to play on Xbox or ps, CoD has has still been the top selling game on ps platform since forever also.....so no surprise that the most popular game franchise on any console could easily have a revival due to servers coming back online...this is just credit to xbox backwards compatibility & thats good thing for Xbox gamers.

wiz7191248d ago

@Frosty orrrr maybe it’s a breath of fresh air to be able to go back to the peak of the series .. and it’s beem great lol

mkis007248d ago

It's going to take 10 years for xbox to generate that much profit...

Rhythmattic248d ago

Why worry when they have OS, Server and Background Data in their hands...
Gaming is just the small piece, at the top left in a few K piece jigsaw.

EasilyTheBest248d ago

If you buy a house with cash for 1 million dollars you still own the house. Microsoft don't need to make the money back.

Rhythmattic246d ago

But its not money back, its about how it goes missing.

jznrpg248d ago

Shooters is what Xbox people play most of the time and that’s about it by the numbers and sales of games.

shinoff2183249d ago

Atkeast older gamers nostalgia is good. Jeez.

Jin_Sakai248d ago

Mostly because the new CoD games are garbage. The old games were much better.

Rutaprkl248d ago

Agree 100%. Cod 4, WaW, Black ops 1 & 2, those were the days.

Rhythmattic248d ago

For MP, Unreal tournament , QIII Arena (loved the UT mod) FTW!

RaidenBlack247d ago

Unreal Tournament and Quake III were simply amazing ... CoD's and CoD-likes' rise killed the arena shooter popularity ...
Unreal Tournament 2004 is my favorite in the series.
Didn't enjoy Unreal Tournament III, Quake Champions that much.
Too bad Epic cancelled Unreal Tournament 2014 becoz of Fortnite

Rhythmattic247d ago (Edited 247d ago )

I got hooked on the QIII Urban Terror mod (and my work colleagues I introduced them to)... LAN Sessions at the closing of the doors at work, into the night , sinking beers and eating pizza..... Good times.

thesoftware730248d ago

Wow, good games never get old I guess.

CoD will always be a beast of a franchise, and how awesome is it that you can just boot it up or pop it into your Xbox and play, MS BC is really a neat feature.

CrimsonWing69248d ago

Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.

1Victor248d ago

@crimson:” Shows you that backwards compatibility is a worthwhile feature.”
I agree it’s worthy at the start of the generation when there’s few new generation games but halfway through the generation it’s not a feature.
Now it’s good that this game is finding a renewed life for its fan but it shows a mayor flaw in new games release when a close decade old game is toppling the charts

CrimsonWing69247d ago

I don't know if I understand what you mean. It's a feature regardless of the time into the generation.

Let's take Armored Core 6 for example. Let's say I'm interested in checking out the previous Armored Core games, sure would be nice if I could play them on my current-gen console.

We're about 3 years into current-gen and old games are hitting in the top 5 for sales charts in the month.

I do get where you're coming from with older games possibly being better than the newer games, but the feature stays the feature. I can only speak for myself, but when there's a lull in game releases or nothing great is out, I like to go back to old titles. It's just nice to not have to have a bunch of consoles out to do so.

I think moving forward it'll be less and less of an issue as like with the PS5 you can access most all of the PS4 games, but I like going back to PS1 and PS2. Would be awesome to kind of make backwards compatibility a prioritized feature moving forward. Hell, Sony was the first to implement it.
