Masahiro Sakurai's PS3 crashes, costing him nearly two decades' worth of save data

Masahiro Sakurai, best known as the creator of Kirby and the director of the 3DS's Kid Icarus: Uprising, is facing disaster.

The sordid details were laid out in the column he wrote this week for Japan's Famitsu magazine. What happened? "The hard disk on my PlayStation 3 has completely died," he said. "It's a full crash. The end. Goodbye, Planet Earth."

But why would I pay to save? Isn't that a service that everyone else offers for free?

turgore4199d ago

You also get a lot of other goodies. The saves are just icing on the cake.

ziggurcat4199d ago

normal game saving? obviously, yes.

cloud saving? no.

Phoenix-Ho-Yoku4199d ago

lol dude if u think thats the only thing ps+ is doing...

you get free exclusives avatars
Animated themes
Beta's Early acces
Full games for free
the best games out there half the price

more and more....the saving thing is just a little bonus

aquamala4199d ago

def free on Steam and Origin

Eyeco4199d ago (Edited 4199d ago )

Yeah I spent £10 for PS+ and on top of of cloud saves I got an ass load of free games Red Dead Redemption, Bulletstorm, Dead Space 2, Little Big Planet 2, Borderlands, Infamous 2, Resident Evil 5 Gold Edition(already played it but lost the disc) Double Dragon Neo, as well as exclusive trials, demo's, betas, free dynamic screen savers, discount on games, cloud saves, so what is that like £300-400 worth of content all for £10-30 if that's not a robbery I don't know what is, it's essentially the closest thing console gaming is gonna get to Steam.

Ben_Grimm4198d ago

@Never

GarandShooter4198d ago

Do you ask the same question about playing online?

oricon4198d ago

You do not get full games for free you get rentals of pre determined games.

Never put 100% trust in technology

Elwenil4199d ago

I find it odd that a software programmer doesn't back everything up regularly out of habit. Every programmer I have known did it like it was their religion.

kneon4198d ago (Edited 4198d ago )

For important stuff I have a raid array plus at least 2 other back ups on non-raid storage.

I do a full back up of my PS3s every 2-3 weeks, back up stuff to PSN and for non-locked game saves I also save a copy to a flash drive.

If it's important to you then back it up or don't come crying when your drive inevitably fails.

How convenient. He is known for making Nintendo games. He just HAD to let people know. It's not like he has any hidden agenda here.....

EDIT: Like other people are saying, if you were smart you would have gotten Playstation Plus to back up all your saves to the cloud. It's weird how you can play so many Playstation games and not be subscribed to Playstation Plus....

why do Sony fanboys need to be so defensive, don't be so surprised when hard drives fail.

HammadTheBeast4198d ago

Why is Sony even mentioned then? He could've just said "Hard Drive Failure".

beerkeg4198d ago

Did you even read it Gravelord? No you didn't, that would be too much hard work aye?

'Sakurai took the rest of his column to discuss the online-backup features of the PlayStation Plus service, as well as similar backup tools on the Xbox 360 and other systems. "Going through this, I wanted to take this column to nag at all of you a little," he closed. "If you don't want to come face-to-face with this depressing turn of events, then it's best if you back up your game save data as much as you can. Right now! Immediately!"'

So obviously after he talked about what happened to him I imagine he spoke about the virtues of the backup tools on PlayStation Plus.

But hey ho, lets turn it into a fanboi fest about hidden agendas.

glennco4198d ago

judging by his agrees there are a bunch of readers who don't read anything but the heading

violents4198d ago

The article was really about reminding people to back up their saves, he's a develper and he forgot. All he's trying to do is give you a word for the wiser. It's just too bad he had to screw up to realize it.

"remember to back up info you want to save"

It's a "scroll wheel" feature on the controller. Switch 2 rumored to have one.

XiNatsuDragnel135d ago

Scroll wheel would be in line with nintendos uniqueness I find appealing imo.

Rainbowcookie134d ago

Just wish they would lower their prices after games are a few years old. Its hard in countries where the exchange rate kills gaming. 1 game is = to and 1/8 of their paycheck. Hard to play a nice mario when its like that.

0hMyGandhi134d ago

Damn, you guys got mean marios over there?

GotGame818133d ago (Edited 133d ago )

Nintendo used to lower prices back in the Gamecube Wii days. They were called Nintendo Selects and priced $20.00. They haven't done that in years. Nintendo should!

FinalFantasyFanatic133d ago

@GotGame818,

I miss those days, they didn't even lower prices for 3DS games before they scuttled new Eshop purchases, or prices on physical copies. I've also noticed the discounts for Switch games aren't as good now that the pandemic has been over for a while, especially on first party games. I wish they would bring the Selects back and drop $20 off the price permanently.

DazaMc134d ago

It's about time for Arkanoids return!

Brazz134d ago

Scroll Wheel would be very cool. Legit great feature for games that need select skills, itens, weapons, etc.

Tacoboto134d ago

Especially if "next to the triggers" means clickable scroll wheels instead of bumpers/L1R1.

That would be so great for games where those buttons already bring up in-game select wheels

Knightofelemia134d ago

Was not one of my favorite consoles but the shit a person could do with it. A gameboy player was about the reason why I liked the GC. And taking it apart to clean it pretty simple I wish Nintendo would let the gameboy player work on the Switch.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Has Been Labelled A ‘Masterpiece’ By Super Smash Bros. Creator

Super Smash Bros. creator Masahiro Sakurai has spent his weekend playing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and has come away more than a little impressed, labelling both games as masterpieces.

eagle21173d ago

Nice! I guess he considers them a "smashing" success. ;p

InUrFoxHole173d ago

Well played sir... well played!

CrimsonWing69173d ago

You win “comment of the day!”

Tzuno173d ago

He must be having quite a low standards when it comes to games
Saying that Reskin 2 is Masterpiece... lol

Dandizzle173d ago

salty much? SM2 is absolutely a masterpiece.

Unknown_Gamer5794173d ago

Just a troll who can’t handle MS taking third place yet again with 2023 exclusives, with their supposed “GotG” not getting the reception it was expected to. Nothing to see here.

GrizzliS1987173d ago

What does he know, 7/10 no name reviewers are much more credible.
Ps: starfield 10/10 easily

FinalFantasyFanatic172d ago

It's Sakurai, I think you need to learn your game developers better, in fact, he has a whole Youtube channel dedicated to game design. I think he knows a thing or two about what makes a good game.
