Wii U is a step in a 'different direction', says Vigil Games

GameZone writes, "We've seen numerous gameplay videos and have had multiple hands-on preview sessions with the Wii U, but the big question seems to be how the Wii U stacks up not just against the unknown future of gaming consoles, but even the current Xbox 360 and PS3. Vigil Games, the developers of Darksiders 2 which is slated to be a Wii U launch title on November 18, lead designer Haydn Dalton wouldn't exactly comment on whether the Wii U is a step up from current gen systems; rather, he chose to describe the system as a step in a "different direction"."

How can you say that? You talk as if the Wii was an abysmal failure and was outsold by all others.

WiiU as Ninty say is a grtaphical beast and the social aspects of the online are beast too when asked what are the 2 main factors in wiiu they say graphics and social interaction ?

We know know the wiiu has DX11 and compute shaders all on a gpgpu and Randy pitchford has said the cpu is much more modern and packs features the other consoles dont have as well as saying its more powerful,the gpgpu is basically what Game Engines will be based off not cpu based engines like the current ones,basically when you see CryEngine3 or Nintendo/Retros Game Engines being used then you will see proper Nextgen graphics.

Exactly what do you think the 720/ps4 is going to do? I look at Last of Us and Beyond Two Souls and the news that David Cage said there is still a lot of power left in the ps3, and I am amazed at how good those games look and how good the AI works. Console games look amazing right now and that is with the limited technology in the ps3/360, Dishonored is another great looking title.

We know that the WiiU is about twice as powerful as these current systems, and we know that because of the hardware specs Nintendo confirmed. So we can logically assume that games for that console can be much more graphically powerful than what we currently have. Also, look at how good Halo 4 looks. I don't understand how you all think that the difference is going to be some crazy gap anymore.

With that said, what do you think the ps4/720 is going to be capable of doing? Is that expectation reasonable? To me it just feels like people are saying these nonsense statements because they don't like Nintendo or they brought the Wii, which was a grossly underpowered system compared to the 360/ps3.

The major difference between the Wii and PS3/360 was HD graphics. I would like to say AI, but that really wasn't true. Yet you look at a game like XenoBlade Chronicles and it did stuff that we never saw on the 360/ps3. What do you think is going to be the key difference between the WiiU and the ps4/720? And is it reasonable to think that based on what we know?

It needs to go its own way.. Nintendo is a game company & needs to be different in order to survive.. If they go toe 2 toe against MS & PS, itl be like gamecube again.. No new ppl to attract other than fans.. Now this thing does have my attention but since 3rd party didnt bring much i liked to the wii, i will wait it out until i see more.. & the damn network is bare bones.. That needs improvement too

seems people forgot how important that 1 year head start was for Microsoft's 360. it was the only new next gen system and people jumped on and so did devs.

Personally I think it's all about whether the third party support improves- Nintendo seems to have learnt it's lesson there with Bayonetta 2, they don't want people to only play it for the first party titles.

That's right. Third Party support seems to be a curse they need to break away from. I suspect that to be the reason why NSMBU is the only first party title available at launch. The more participation they get, the better it will be. Acquiring GTA5, is prudent. They've got 2 years to get their sh*t together, and it may be their last chance for Nintendo not to be marginalized as a third party developers pit of despair.

Hardly anybody bought the Nintendo Gamecube, and the Wii was a huge success.

Maybe if things don't bode well for the Wii U in the future, they (Nintendo) might revert back to a more traditional way of manufacturing gaming hardware.

Although the wii sold a shit tonne of consoles I feel it has left Nintendo in a bit of bad light. I su this because 90% of the people I know who have one have now let them collect dust and reverted back to 360/ps3 and I know most of these will not give the wii u a second look because of it. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed it for the first year or so it really does bring the family together but as a gamer do I really wanna concentrate on too many things going on or do I wanna sit their after a hard days work feet up and cold beer next to me. I suppose it's just personal preference. Nintendo will do well with this don't get me wrong but I feel they have lost a lot of the average/core gamers.

The worse thing for Nintendo and for gamers is for Nintendo to blindly follow the path of Sony and Microsoft. They tried that with the GameCube and it was a miserable failure. At least going down this route will promote competition. There biggest concern is getting the third party on board and making sure third party games sell well. If they follow the current model they are doing now, by keeping the spotlight on the third party, then they are definitely moving in the right direction.
