Shikoro4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

As soon as I saw the first picture, "360" popped immediately up in my mind. Why does everything have to be Metro-like today? I wouldn't mind if Metro was that good to warrant being copied by everyone, but it isn't. If they had just added some sorting options for the download list, improved the search (a lot) and sped things up, that would have done wonders. Oh well... I like it to a certain extent, but wish they did something different...

miyamoto4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

reminds me more of the new Android YouTube UI update where you swipe bigger panels instead of just touching them

maybe they optimised this for the Vita & mobile devices with touch screens?

SandWitch4207d ago

I have to agree, it looks very Metro-ish.

Though a few months ago I tried designing a PS4 UI with Photoshop and ended up with something similar to this new PS Store. I assume that Metro and especially X360's UI is something that gets into your mind.

MikeMyers4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

As long as it's easy to navigate and find the stuff I want quickly, that's all I really care about. I do like this new look though.

Sarcasm4207d ago

As long as they don't have McDonald's ads plastered all over the place, I'd be happy with this change.

nukeitall4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

It's like Sony looked at XBL/Windows 8/Metro and said we want that!

I don't blame them, it looks good. I for one don't care that Sony copied. It is a benefit to everyone and after all, the sincerest form of flattery is copying!

Congrats to Sony for finally doing something about that god awful store that has incomplete image download and is so slow.

This is a good step in the right direction.

Razmossis4207d ago

I'm sorry, what was wrong with the store? And when were people complaining about it?

I understand the point about icons loading slowly but surely that's a network issue, not a design issue. I for one have never had trouble finding something on the store, there's a search tool! I'm also not against the redesign, I just don't like people putting words in our collective mouths.

Lvl_up_gamer4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

That looks very much like how XBL is set up. I see a lot of Metro going on there.

The last pic you can see the correlated frames as they fade away into the background, very much like the XBL dashboard prior to the new dash.

I think this looks great and really well done but undoubtedly influenced by XBL/Metro.

This user friendly UI design is just another example how PSN is growing and maturing into something greater. I can't wait to see how the PSN is designed with the PS4.

SilentNegotiator4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

Metro? BS. That isn't metro. Look at the ACTUAL navigation and not just the picture put into the upper-right for hits.

http://www.destructoid.com/...

But I don't expect 360 trolls to be versed in PSN. They've only had tiles alongside the main menu for FREAKING YEARS.

guitarded774207d ago

I like it, but I'm so used to the way the store is now. I know where everything is. Oh well... I'll get good at using this store UI too.

hkgamer4207d ago

Yes very metro like. Somehow reminded me of how the skydrive live UI is like in fullscreen.

Anyone who says otherwise is just lying to themselves. Sony were definitely inspired in a way.

Looks great and lets hope that this store would be able to integrate Gaikai features in so that I can instantly play demos from the store. Imagine being able to browse through the store and with a click of a button the demo is playable, alot better than having to wait for a download.

raytraceme4207d ago

Ehh it fells more like sony's android ui if anything. But the new store looks great!!!

darthv724207d ago

that they will merge the two (xmb/store) into a cohesive flowing experience.

In case you dont know what i mean...the store has always felt like an afterthought. An add-on you put in the effort to go into to see what is new. yes there are the different short cuts on the xmb for video portion, game portion and of course the what's new area.

still those were things you actually had to go do instead of them being completely integrated. Even the idea of leaving the store, you are asked if you want to do that. I was really looking forward to a more complete feeling of moving about the xmb/store in one.

okay, if i had to make a comparison it would be something like this. the xmb/store is like a mall where as the 360 interface is like a department store. If you know the difference in the way both are laid out...you get the idea.

Gamer19824207d ago

Dir_en_grey4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

OMG why does everything have to go the Metro look

Overtly sized pictures might work well with small touch screens but it just looks really ugly and takes up way too much space for a big TV screen

I hate how they fill up the whole main page with ONLY pictures
The "Latest PS3 games", "Top Downloaded" and "Top Rated" on the right should be text based list like the Japanese PSN. If it's like what it's shown now it's just a one more waste of step to go into that category.

Ugh I hate this wasting a half page of space just to sell an advertisement like Pic 2 and 4,

They basically removed the navigation menu on the left side they have now into an advertising space (as indicated in Pic 4) and you have to do one more button push to call out the Navigation bar which they have now (as indicated in Pic 2).

That's why I hated the UI on Xbox, just waste of time going through these ads and scrawling through these huge pictures page after page.

Anyway I just hope the end result is not as ugly and most importantly easier to navigate then what is shown now. AT LEAST make the 4th pic(game store main page) be like the Japanese store and show text list on the right instead of showing those ugly scroll of icons which accomplishes nothing.

SONY, speaking about Microsoft back in 2006. The irony of it all. The sweet sweet irony.

GribbleGrunger4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

Let's hope that MS copy Sony and offer you online gaming for free. :)

lodossrage4207d ago

The did at one time.

Remember, there was a time Silver members played free on the original xbox and even for the first year and a half on the 360.

But once they realized they had enough people dumb enough to get suckered in that all changed obviously.

GribbleGrunger4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

It was just a gentle joke but I take your point. I don't think there's anything 'dumb' about LIVE users, I just think 360 owners accept it as the norm and don't think twice about paying... or they're ill informed (which isn't dumb because so am I on many subjects)

... and perhaps Crossgame chat IS worth that money to them... but we digress

insomnium24207d ago

Strategy? What in the world does the UI have to do with strategy? Strategy means things like HDMI port, 1080p and eclusive games by the bucket load and we all know how that went down.

StoneyYoshi4207d ago (Edited 4207d ago )

@Ndivhu

Same thing can be said about MS taking Sonys idea of having a hdmi port, 1080p support, integrated WIFI, slimline model. Every company in the same kind of market is going to use the same ideas from others. its inevitable.....

WiiLovePS3604207d ago

Is it just me or is it almost a direct copy of the Xbox 360 "Metro" store design?

gaffyh4207d ago

If you mean the fact that it's tiled, well then yes and no, because the current PSN Store is also tiled, they've just removed the borders, and changed the colour scheme.

WiiLovePS3604207d ago

Wow, looks like I really offended some Playstation supporters with my comment.

It wasn't meant in a negative way, just pointing out that it bares more than a passing resemblance. The fonts, the design, the new unified page for each game like how the 360 has done it since release, even down to the image for the "Top Rated Games" having the covers of the games lined up slightly offset like the previous Xbox 360 UI.

HammadTheBeast4207d ago

The disagrees are for people disagreeing with you. You asked a question, people responded. Agrees/Disagrees don't matter much.

KwietStorm_BLM4207d ago

Redemption-6414d ago

@Cacabunga
You only speak for you and those who think like you, but most fans will support what they want. Playstation and PC fans are literally supporting Helldivers 2 and that is a gaas. Maybe you wouldn't, but many more would if they like it.

Huey_My_D_Long13d ago

@Redemption-64
Look, Im not making any judgement calls about this guy, but I will say that Helldivers 2 GaaS model is unique to Helldivers, and legit the only other game I can think of thats similiar was the Avengers game except HD2 pass is still better.
The fact that you can earn in game currency in a way that doesnt make you feel like you have to grind forever, as well you being able work on that pass that you bought...on your own time without a time limit...that right there is fucking huge to me, and I can't name any game other than avengers that avoided trapping players with FOMO logic...I think GaaS on HD2 shouldn't be compared to the rest of the industry...it should be copied.

Einhander197213d ago

Cacabunga

Helldivers 2...

Redemption-64

In Europe it's a 60 40 split favoring PC.
In the US its a 60 40 split favoring PS5.

So PlayStation owners supported the game just fine, it's not getting carried by PC or anything like that.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

@just_looken,
I'm perfectly fine with the way Nintendo entered the mobile market, I never touched their mobile games, meanwhile, the console/handheld stayed the way it is. As for being a bean counter, he's probably going to reel in these massive budgets that Sony's studios have had lately, I haven't played Spiderman 2, but I cannot see how they almost tripled the budget for that game.

@Redemption-64,
That's an exception to the rule, I'm expecting a lot of these GAAS games from Sony to fail, to be fair, they only need a few to succeed, but I would have preferred that they put more of their resources into other types of games.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 13d ago
DivineHand12514d ago

True their monetization is driving players away and at the same time, their decision to chop out content and convoluted systems is keeping new players away from the game.

Joe91314d ago

I don't think that will happen based on how things worked out at Naughty Dog now that we know what we do, seems they had the option to fully commit to live service games or stay making single player experences so they gave up on their live service game. We are not sure how things came about with Bend making a live service game but I hope that was not a forced situation. Sony doesnt seem like they are forcing studios to switch up but we will see, Sony's bread and butter is single player games it is how they dominated the console market.

Obscure_Observer14d ago

Yeah, I though Sony learned something from all their failures in the LS segment under Bungie´s disastrous leadership and supervision which led to games been cancelled, studios closed and all the people laid off.

Looks like Bungie still plays a major role in Sony´s LS initiative and Sony is not backtracking on their GaaS plans.

S2Killinit14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Are we forgetting that Destiny is also a highly successful franchise? I feel like that definitely deserves mention here.

Besides, there is no reason why a person cant learn from past experiences.

Joe91313d ago

I agree, people act as if Destiny flopped when it came out lol it took 9 to 10 years for the numbers to fall yet people are still playing it add the success of Helldivers 2 no wonder Sony is going forward down this path.

S2Killinit13d ago

Personally, I see no problem with Sony also having service games as long as they make good ones, and more importantly they deliver the AAA story driven games that they are known for. So yeah, I agree 100% with you.

+ Show (2) more repliesLast reply 13d ago
Christopher14d ago

I mean, this person made some pretty bad decisions at Bungie. I hope they've learned from them because I definitely don't see those type of ideas as good for PlaySation in general.

CrimsonWing6913d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Honestly, what’s to learn from? How to make people happily continuously dump money into a single game over its life-time? Buy season passes continuously for several years with a smile on our faces?

GaaS is a design decision that is everything wrong with this industry. The fact that Helldivers 2 did so well and people defend the monetization because it was $40 and is a fun game, scares the sh*t out of me to see that the door is open and all shift will probably be to replicate that in future games. We already know the ROI for traditional game dev cost isn’t doing it for them.

I thought with Jimbo leaving we’d see a change for the better… I’m not so sure now.

S2Killinit13d ago

Service games are being offered by everyone. Sony cannot afford to only create single player AAA games. No one can. They already said they will be doing both.

Abnor_Mal14d ago (Edited 14d ago )

Ps5 gamers in 2023 seemed to play more live service types of games, so regardless to how people feel about them, numbers don’t lie and Sony is going where the money is. I mean look at the excitement around Helldivers2, people are showing that they want live service games.

Christopher14d ago

They play long-time existing live service games like CoD, Fortnite, Apex Legends, Destiny 2, and the like. Mass majority of new live service games are considered failures and aren't moving gamers away from older games.

just_looken14d ago

Yep the huge issue with live service is they need paid players along with a reason to play them.

You forgot mobile market that also taps into that player base as well as the eve online style games there is only a certain amount of krakens/whales blind supporters compared to the amount of live service games we have its not sustainable math wise.

700 restaurants making food for every seat for 1000-3000 eaters just does not work out

Einhander197213d ago (Edited 13d ago )

Christopher

I am not a big live service fan and literally own zero of the games you listed, but that is not true, unless you call games that aren't the top games to be failures.

There are tons of live service games that are profitable.

Games don't have to be the biggest game ever they just need to make more than they cost.

I challenge you to show professionally prepared data that shows that more live service games fail than make enough to keep going.

Because all the data that I have seen shows that live service is less of a gamble than making a big AAA budget game which needs to survive off retail sales.

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

I sometimes wonder if we're at saturation point, where it's hard for a new game to join those ranks unless it's particularly exceptional, people only have so much time and money to devote to these types of games.

romulus2314d ago

Correction, they have no issue playing good live service games

shinoff218313d ago

Lol it's not even a quarter of the ps5s sold. Helldivers may have been a hit but let's not say most are enjoying it because truth is most(the real most ) don't care about it.

S2Killinit13d ago (Edited 13d ago )

I play what is fun. If a live service game is good I’ll play it as long as its not a money scheme which Helldivers is not.

And Im a single player gamer.

mastershredder14d ago

How do you kill a franchise that already been killed?
Destiny’s grind, cash-in-on-playbass-cha-Ching, and pop-culture-insertion mainstream-me-too bs totally killed any rep Bungie had. Sony/Bungie, if you are doing this to ward-off players, it’s already working.
