FF4, FF7-10, Chrono Trigger and Xenogears with Xenosaga getting a notable mention.

Anything else I've played, especially this gen, just doesn't hold up.

-Mika-4216d ago

So you didn't like Final fantasy 13? It had a fun and engaging combat system followed by an amazing story.

TekoIie4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

You know were talking about RPG's right? :3

FF13 didnt become an RPG until you were past 70% of the game which dragged on ridiculously long. Also its story is mediocre at best.

The only thing I can think of that made the game good was its boss fights, creativity with enemy designs and cutscenes.... I always like a good cutscene here and there in games ^.^

camel_toad4216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

@Godmars290

That's a damn fine list you have there heh.

I'd include Lost Odyssey if not for the totally generic main bad guy (and totally forgettable) who totally undermined the great quality of the game itself.

Xof4215d ago

Agreed. Almost. I cound handhelds as 'current gen,' so I'd include games like Persona 4 and Infinite Space, and Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky.

As for older games, yeah, there are those JRPG classics. Xenogears, Xenosaga, the 'golden' Final Fantasies (4-10), Chrono Trigger, Suikoden 2 and 5, Wild Arms, Dragon Quests--particularly the awesome DS remakes--and so many others.

But don't forget those incredible WRPGs from the golden age of PC gaming. Shadows of Amn, Planescape Torment, Fallout 2, Arcanum, etc.

Snookies124216d ago (Edited 4216d ago )

Cannot pick a favorite, there are way too many amazing ones out there. FF6-10 (and tactics), Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Kingdom Hearts 1-2, Tales of Graces F, Xenoblade, Super Mario RPG, YS Seven and Origin, etc.

LX-General-Kaos4216d ago

Xenoblade Chronicles followed by Skies of Arcadia Legends

-Mika-4216d ago

Overrated game followed by overrated game.

LX-General-Kaos4216d ago

I see you have yet to named a game. Just criticizing choices made by others.

remanutd554216d ago

well since im not that big of a RPG fan and i have played only a few i would say my favorite is between Rogue Galaxy or Dark Cloud.

If this is true, I hope it leads to Morrowind getting remade next.

-Foxtrot4d ago

I thought they’d go for Morrowind first to be honest but this is a welcoming surprise to tide us over before ES6

TheColbertinator3d ago

Well said. Exactly my thoughts too.

Tedakin4d ago

Unreal Engine isn't efficient for open world games, so I question the reliability of this story.

isarai4d ago

Yeah, 1st thing that came to my mind too, although i CAN see it being likely for ease if use, but it's not going to run very well if so

Tacoboto4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

I'd wonder if it would just be exploiting Unreal for graphics but the underlying engine/logic is still the original framework.

Like how we had the graphical remakes of Halo Anniversary, Tomb Raider I-III, and Demon's Souls.

Could also end up a disaster like the GTA Trilogy

mkis0073d ago

I have heard that too but even if it's modified isnt arkham knight UE?

Fragslayer3d ago

"remake will run both an Unreal Engine 5 project and the old Oblivion project. For instance, new graphics are rendered in the Unreal Engine 5 project, but most of the gameplay and physics are still done on the original Oblivion engine"

So with this logic it'll run just fine using UE5 tool sets on top of Gamebryo's engine or maybe even Creation Engine, who knows.

Hopefully modders can fix the aged combart in this game if this is true. Enemies leveling up with you broke and defeated the whole purpose of leveling up.

Fragslayer3d ago

Yeah it could use some tuning for sure hence the need for a Remake not a Remaster. I'm surprised it's even a conversation within them group which makes me skeptical it's Oblivion. I wouldn't say they shouldn't level up at all though maybe just a leave them a couple levels behind to appease the masses.

Original Final Fantasy 7 - Is it Worth Playing in 2024?

Final Fantasy 7 has come back under the spotlight thanks to the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, but is it worth replaying the original?

ravens5215d ago

Got to Zacks part in 7 Rebirth. Said f it. Finishing my game in 7 og. Just got to part 2 yesterday. I also got Crisis Core... So it'll be a while before I'm back to Rebirth. I just keep thinking about it too smh, want to get back to playing it. Not till I know Zacks story though. I beat 7 og sooooooo long ago, it's crazy going through it again and remembering things.

MrNinosan15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Got to Zacks part in Rebirth?
You mean you started the game and turned it off?
The game starts with Zack...

ravens5215d ago

... Really 🤓 lol. His second part, I've played for 80hrs lmao. <---- PS5 Run time, probably not all game time. You guys know how it goes.

VIK212115d ago (Edited 15d ago )

Did you not ever play the OG FF7? After you recruit Vincent, later in the game, disc 3, return to that basement and look at the pod, there's a whole Zack story that'll trigger as a memory.... it's well hidden in the game and a lot of things regarding Zack are cleared up. FF7 Crisis Core is basically an extend feature of that hidden flashback... It took me years to discover it back then lol

MrNinosan15d ago

@ravens52
80 hours in Rebirth by doing everything, and you should've reached Zacks story about 5 times 🤣

ravens5214d ago

Ye I kno that's y I said not all gameplay time. But also I am very anal when it comes to exploring.

ravens5214d ago

Not to mention fighting Titan at his full strength. Hours spent trying still haven't succeeded. Found all 3 ruins but I'ma masochist when it comes to games.

Barlos15d ago

Very much so. Graphically it's dated but the story and the gameplay haven't aged a day. It's still one of my all time favourite RPGs and for me is better than Remake in some ways.

Barlos15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

It always takes me back to Christmas 1997, I got it as a gift and I was blown away when I played it. I couldn't believe games could look that good. The combination of pre rendered backgrounds and FMV really made it stand out. It definitely still has a certain charm that modern games can't replicate.

I can't imagine people will still be talking about Remake and Rebirth in 27 years.

Tapani14d ago

Fully agreed. To me the atmosphere, pacing, gameplay and music are all better than in the remake.

Rebel_Scum15d ago

Yes, play this, skip remake, start rebirth for new players.

I_am_Batman15d ago

Skip Remake? That's terrible advice.

leahcim15d ago

Remake is so amazing, pure FFVII Love, play it on PS5 please! aww the graphics the battles, the music... a dream come true.

Rebel_Scum15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I disagree Batman
