What Does ‘Next-Gen’ Gaming Mean To You?

Kevin from The Reticule says: ‘Next-Gen’ is a term that’s being thrown around quite loosely at the moment. Everything from next-gen consoles, to next-gen graphics and next-gen gaming accessories are hot topics of discussion and speculation right now.

But forget hype, advertisement and what developers are saying. What does next-gen really mean to the gamers of this generation? What advancements and improvements would they like to see in the next instalment of consoles and PC’s to hit the market?

These are the very questions I asked myself, my friends and the writers and followers of The Reticule.

I would like next gen to be:

Fire and brimstone coming down from the skies! Rivers and seas boiling! Forty years of darkness! Earthquakes, volcanoes... The dead rising from the grave! Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together... mass hysteria! <thank you Ghostbusters>

Next gen is just the next console in the line, but I expect full 1080p and 60fps for every game. I'd also like more intelligent A.I. and more people on the screen at once. Less pop in, draw in and distance issues, no texture issues as well.

So basically that is what I'm hoping for.

But in all seriousness, yes all that has to be standard. Too many promises from MS and Sony, yet neither can produce 1080p graphics for AAA titles.

I hope next-gen gets this up and running correctly from the very start of launch or no later than a month after launch. Hardware upgrades is a given, but it's the stuff you mentioned that needs to be standard by then. The days of clunky navigation should be left behind.

real time shadows that don't artifact all over the place

basically pc quality graphics from the last 4-5 years on console would be next gen, and it is what i expect.

will it come to fruition, I certainly hope so, but remain somewhat sceptical.

AI is a dream. no games ever trick me into believing I am playing another person. what gets me is AI has not really been improved over the last 10 years, yet graphics have tenfold. yearly sporting games like fifa should be like watching a real match by now.

Oh god... I'm sick of poor AI. One example is the type of AI in a lot of FPS that just pops up, shoots, and hides. Sometimes they'll attempt to flush you out with grenades or flank you in a predictable way. I know this sounds simplistic, but why not assign certain attributes to the enemy, even if those enemies are all low level cloned characters.

For example, have 4 variations of the same cloned character with some being more daring, cautious, tactical, cowardly, or teamwork centric based on the given attributes. I think if these different AI enemies are mixed in the battle, it would give an interesting and different outcome.

Why is everyone overlooking some of the simplest things? How about no clipping? Animation that doesn't look silly? Shadows that don't look like utter crap? Sorry but 1080p and 60 fps is just the tip of the iceberg for me.

Next gen for consoles will be the same as this gen,devs will push the weak hardware to hard and games will have blocky flickering shadows,jaggies everywhere,bad frames rates etc.

Dear Games Industry:

You ask too many darn questions ok, I am a Hardcore gamer, you know what I like , You know I want deep immersive meaningful game experiences whether its shooter games, rpg's, arcade, multi-player, mmo's, platformer's, adventure games, & all the hybrids & combinations of them. I want great graphics, great game play, smart & clever AI etc, just!! do it ok?!

Stop messing around , tryna get in my head, bring me the best games I KNOW your capable of making, I KNOW you have the "Technology to do it", Bring me the games!! & all will be cool.
We the gamers wanna play the best there is, we want great challenges & fun games in ALL CATEGORIES this Next Gen, bring it on man!!! just do it!!

1080p and 60fps as standard, better textures and AI. Basically I expect the E3 Watchdogs gameplay footage at a minimum! BRING IT ON!!
