During the development of the Wii, Nintendo created a number of different prototype controllers and eventually settled on the Wii Remote. Surprisingly, one of the rejected prototypes was inspired by the design of the DS and featured a touchscreen, much like the Wii U GamePad.

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

That's interesting, because they orginally wanted the Wii Remote to be an accessory to the Gamecube, so they probably scrapped and came up with this for the Wii, then brought back the Wiimote.
It's odd that Nintendo is the company that takes the biggest risks.
