XCOM Enemy Unknown Review | IGN

Imagine that aliens are invading the Earth and you’ve been put in charge of the defense of the entire planet. That daunting proposition is at the heart of XCOM Enemy Unknown, the latest strategy game from Firaxis and 2K. Players manage the paramilitary XCOM project, deciding what new projects to research and what new technology to produce so that the XCOM troopers go into battle with the best equipment possible. Do well and the funding nations will pour even more money into the XCOM project. Do poorly and the nations will pull out, leaving the project with even fewer resources to fight back the alien invasion.

IGN cannot into strategy games?

9s and 10s across the board. Get with the program, IGN.

Better honest than hyped/me-too reviews.

its odd to see ign be the odd guy out lol usually they cater to the hype train.

either way, when 8.2 is the lowest score you've got, you did something right.

cant wait until tomorrow!

they give crappy games 8.0's. Every other review so far is at least 90.

taquito4217d ago (Edited 4217d ago )

theymust've played the console version;

pc version is on its way via UPS

hope i get it early today :)

and to critisize it for difficulty, i want it to be tough

Yeah, the original XCom UFO Defense was pretty unforgiving at times and I loved it because of that.

vortis4217d ago

It wasn't just "pretty unforgiving", you would land the ship, step a rookie off the Sky Ranger's platform and *BAM*...Alien lands a headshot.

The old games were blatantly unforgiving because they acted like they were there to take over the planet. It was harsh, bitter and tons of fun.

I didn't much care for the XCOM demo because it was too hand-holdy. But hopefully they fixed this in the full game. I also hope there's someway to increase the soldier field count because six soldiers is usually the amount that died on terror missions.

8.2 is not far from all the other scores. Less than a full point. What would be a good sales figure for a game like this?

MattyG4217d ago

I'm expecting around a quarter million. I can't see it selling much, due to its genre and the time it's releasing. I may be way off though.

vortis4217d ago

Quarter million is first month sales for the PC version...

Old-schoolers will eat it up, no doubt.

I'm thinking this will do about 500k the first month between consoles and PC.

Not bad! Can't wait to dive into this game!

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

shinoff2183180d ago (Edited 180d ago )

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

What other games were inspired by this game?

JL2930179d ago

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183178d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

JL2930178d ago (Edited 178d ago )

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
