Are Used Games Worth it?

Here are some reasons why you should or shouldn't buy used games. Despite the price is purchasing new games; even at a higher cost better than buying a new copy? Or is it buying a used copy of a game you might be doing more harm than good?

I feel people have the right to chose rather to buy new or used software..It's sad that publishers wanna kill of something that has been part of the gaming culture since forever.

It all depends on the price of the used game...if the difference between the new and used game is only $15 then you might as well buy the new game.

Has anyone ever went to Game Stop and asked for a new game and the guy behind the counter pulls out a game in a white paper slip on case and then looks for the original box and puts it in?

This happened to me the other day when I was buying Sleeping Dogs at GS and I told that guy to dont bother again as I felt kind of cheated paying $60 since the game was already opened and not in the case.

dude, $15 is a huge difference! Maybe you're rich or something but $15 is a lot of money.

And I really have no idea where you have seen used games costing $15 less than the new one. Not even on ebay. Used games these days only cost 2-3 dollars less than the new one. And then when you add the online pass the used games end up being more expensive than buying them new. XD

If it is a $15 difference, than yeah I'm buying used. A $5 difference is another story...

It's really not sad, it's just greed on the publishers part. So if you like having the option to buy a game used then stay away from cloud gaming and complete digital distribution because those two things will kill used games off.

Depends, I usually purchase a used game when it is:

-When it is extremely hard to find, especially with Amazon's ridiculous pricing on some titles.....

-If I am shaky on a new company. I look at is as foreplay before jumping in bed for the whole 9 yards. If I like what I see, Ill support their next installment full price.

-I look at Used Game outlets as a voting booth sometimes especially when it comes to companies that implement poor practices. If it's a main entry of a series I loved but I don't like the direction it went, I usually buy it used if it grows enough curiosity in me and to have an opinion of the game.

If I find games like Forza 3 and O.D.S.T. in one package for twenty bucks I will buy it every time. I will usually not buy used if it's only gonna save me a couple of dollars unless it's part of a buy two get one free deal.

I purchase pre-owned games when you can't find them new anymore.

These days used games only cost like 2-3 dollars less than the new copy and many times these used copies require some kind of online pass too anyway so the used copy ends up being more expensive than the new one.

They are still worth it but only when GameStops does the sales around Christmas about buy 2 used and get 1 free. Now this is a good deal.

Don't know if you're aware or even care, but there are other places to purchase used games than Gamestop that offer a greater cost difference than 2-3 dollars.

THANK YOU! I get so mad when people think the only place selling used games is GS. I own my own shop and we don't gouge like GS does, and we sell our games at a reasonable price compared to what they are new.

The problem is, many places only have a Gamestop and many don't like buying online. I just moved to an area and found that the only place that sells used games is Gamestop with the closest competition being 150 miles away...what sucks more is that it is also the only place I would be able to find older games from PS2/XBox and back without driving to the polar opposite end of the state >_<

I only buy new copies for a few franchises. Over 90 percent of my games are bought used. It is the same game and i save money. Why would i pay extra money for some plastic i have to tear off my game box?

I have bought new and used copies before. Sometimes there is not a new copy in, and I'll take the used one if I want the game bad enough. Other times it is tough to find a new copy of an older game that I want. I dare you to find a new copy of Valkyria Chronicles right now.

I think that, if the game is not sold new anywhere, then used is the way to go. Anything else: buy it new, or you're doing the company that made it a disservice. Some games that are unopened and collectors items go for ridiculous prices (ex. Earthbound) are better off bought used/pirated because none of the money will go to the companies that made it happen.

i only buy used copies of hard to find import games( thanks sony for being region free) In most cases i just simply wait for a price drop.

one out of 3 used games ive bought on disc was scratched. This is not ok. However 3ds and ds games are usually a safe bet buying used just not off ebay as you may get bootleg products that wont even work in the systems

Buy new games that deserve it from AAA quality & effort involved in making the thing.. A half a$$ed game that seems a bit interesting but u know it was quickly thrown together with little to no effort hell no.. Get it used after a price drop too.. as long as it still has the box & book.. Also depends on the financial situation.. some ppl aren't as fortunate as others to have new things as they would like.. Pretty much describes how I do it. If it is a quality game that deserves its price tag, I buy it used. If it is worth buying but I don't trust the game or company, I buy used at under $35. After several consecutive times of buying a high-quality (in my opinion, at least) product, that company becomes trusted. Meaning even new IPs will be bought used until I am significantly disappointed by drop in quality or crap corporate practices. Sort of like how Gamespot fired a reviewer for giving their honest opinion on a game by rating it IIRC higher than corporate demanded; never trusting them again.

Yes they are worth it.

For games that have an active online community like Black Ops 2 or Halo 4, I would rather get the game right away to experience it as it's happening and new.

Used games are awesome for everything else I missed.

I just bought a 3DS a few months ago so No I get to play all the DS games I never had because I haven't owned a hand held since GBA.
