There’s been a lot of talk about whether PlayStation’s cast of characters are iconic, or recognizable enough to carry a party brawler like PlayStation All-Stars, and this touchy topic has been largely pushed due to the widespread belief that Nintendo, in contrast to PlayStation, has an arsenal of creative, nostalgic, and identifiable mascots. With all 20 PlayStation All-Stars revealed, why don’t we take an objective look at Super Smash Bros, and what Battle Royale can do for PlayStation as a whole. - PSLS
While Playstation All-Stars Battle Royale didn't get the best review, there are still some aspects of the game that deserve some credit.
Though PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale is a bit of a cult classic, it could have been a big hit if it launched in 2022 instead of 2012.
It wouldn't have mattered, Sony would've rushed it out and left it to die. More so now than before with their focus now being on SP narrative driven AAA games.
Oh, but somehow Smash Bros. 64 made it work?
It just couldn’t compete with Smash Bros. and it wasn’t a free-to-play game like Multiversus.
I think it released at the right time. It's just after the success of Smash and Multiversus, it's finally time for a sequel.
I'd be all in on a remake or remaster of the original. I enjoyed it because I didn't sit there and compare every aspect to SSB. I just enjoyed it as it was.
Sony should make part 2 and dump a good amount of money on it. Scrap super only kills and it's bound to succeed.
God of War: Ragnarok has plenty of fun references to PlayStation history, but now fans have discovered a conversation that calls back to PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale — the crossover fighting game released for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita.
That’s interesting. It actually does make it canon lol. He mentioned it in a mainline game. I’d say that’s pretty cool.
NO because Sony is Doomed.
Nobody will ever have bigger icons than Nintendo.
Not with only 20 characters it won't.
But screw unity. PlayStation games stand strong independent of each other.
Maybe not Battle Royale, but they are on to something with the concept of mashing up worlds. (Just a idea so bear with me) Think of franchises like Uncharted and God of War made a cross-over game. Drake goes exploring one day and finds a mythical artifact from Kratos times. He found the artifact, but then he gets zapped back in time where Kratos is looking for the same artifact. But Drake is the only one that knows where to find it. So Drake and Kratos must work together, in order to find this artifact of legend and for Drake to return to his own time. I just think Sony needs to find their niche and stick with it , while at the same time staying true to the Sony brand and play-style.
It will definitely make these characters more known to the gaming community, but they cannot be as iconic as the Nintendo cast as the article suggest it could. Lets pick 5 of the more well known characters from each roster.
Sony: Drake, Kratos, Ratchet, Sweet Tooth, and Dante. Yes, this is new Dante, but the "Dante" character is still very well known.
Nintendo: Mario, Link, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, and Samus.
Lets be realistic here. The Nintendo list i made is the dictionary definition for iconic characters, but that really doesn't matter for all stars because this ISN'T a Nintendo game. This is a playstation game, and if not being as well known as Mario or Link decided if a game would be popular or not, then I doubt there would be any video games at all besides Mario or Zelda games.
This game will help boost the awareness of the characters, but lets not get ahead of ourselves by even assuming they can reach the level of these Nintendo characters in terms of being iconic.
