Cliffy B talks about his most disappointing game this generation, which is Uncharted 3.

says the man, they has made gears of war LOL

LX-General-Kaos4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

If you actually see what he says its not as bad as the headline made it look. Granted that he could have chosen a more qualified game.

Irishguy954220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

Yeah it's not even close, Cliffy B was disappointed like loads of people where, even if they believe it's still good, it had Uncharted 2 to beat and it simply didn't.

@ relient, it's essentially the pacing, Uncharted 2 had consistent quality throughout, Uncharted 3 was boring in the first half and amazing in the second imo.

Locksus4220d ago

@Irishguy95
I thought it was the other way around. I thought UC3 first half was awesome but the second was way too action oriented.

MikeMyers4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

I'm really starting to get disgusted with the way headlines are generated all for the sake of getting hits. If you watch the full interview, the host Geoff Keighley asks the other 3 guests any game they were disappointed in. Tim Schafer has the most difficult time likely because it's a loaded question and he's just a nice guy. Cliffy wastes no time and mentions more than 1 game. One of them being Uncharted 3 which of course will generate the most attention.

Now to put it all into perspective Cliffy B says Uncharted 2 was his GOTY title. He knows Uncharted 3 had big big shoes to fill which is why he was a bit letdown by Uncharted 3. He doesn't say it's a bad game. His other pick was Rage, but of course the media will continue to treat us all like naive fanboys.

LastDance4220d ago

remember that omg moment in U2 when the house your in collapses? Very memorable right?

How many times does something similar to that happen in U3? I lost count when i was playing it..

The game had poor pacing and the end level in particular felt extremely rushed

Sarcasm4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

I used to think that UC2 was better than UC3 also. In fact UC2 is still one of the best games of any generation. But after playing UC3 multiple play throughs, I've learned that they couldn't really make it any other way and instead they progressed the story to a more focused narrative which ends up being genius.

*****SPOILER FOR YOU IF YOU DIDN'T PLAY UC3*****

But I was frozen when I thought Sully actually got killed.********

ShinMaster4219d ago (Edited 4219d ago )

Just saying, Cliffy.

Gazondaily4219d ago (Edited 4219d ago )

I really didn't think N4G was that big- for Cliffy to call out N4G specifically...you never known he could be lurking around here.

As far as him picking Uncharted 3, true fans shouldn't take his choice to heart at all;

Think of the Uncharted series as the Godfather of video games. The first one was brilliant and the sequel was nothing short of spectacular, with an amazing storyline and and the inclusion of multiplayer (the equivalent of Don Corleone's story?) So with Uncharted 2 being the gaming equivalent of Godfather 2, you're bound to be disappointed by anything that comes after it. Now, I'm not suggesting Uncharted 3 was as bad as Godfather 3, it's just that it might have left many disappointed simply because of how epic (no pun intended) Uncharted 2 was.

Personally, I enjoyed all 3 games. I wouldn't put it on my most disappointing game list.

I totally agree with his choice when it came to Rage. Where was the deathmatch? This is id software! You have to do deathmatch. He summed it up really well.

I'd also mention Final Fantasy or Modern Warfare 3.

bnaked4219d ago

I would compare it to Nolan's Batman trilogy. ;-)

Gazondaily4219d ago

@bnaked

Ah yeah that's a much better analogy :)

LostDjinn4219d ago (Edited 4219d ago )

Cliffy may well be a douche. I remember him whining like hell when someone gave GeoW3 an eight but there's more to this then that.

Cinemablend is a site so low, without moral or ethical guidelines, that at one point they ran a story claiming N4G users don't just condoned rape, they defend it!
http://www.cinemablend.com/...

In fact it's the same author (William Usher) on both pieces.

So before you think Cliffy was just being a douche again for attention remember it's Cinemablend. After all, why would they be above smearing Cliffy for hits when they've already smeared you for them?

Edit: Before you pathetic excuses for "journalists" (LOL(Even blogger is too generous a term)) that work for Cinemablend try and blame GT for this, it's your OP that appears here.

Hang your #%$&in' heads in shame! You're disgusting.

Nimblest-Assassin4218d ago

I don't undertand why people are getting so upset with him

He has a mutual respect for ND, but he felt disappointed in the game as a player.

Simply because U2 set the bar so high, and U3 had a hard time reaching it

He never said its a bad game... he just said he wish it was as good as U2

You really can't blame him for feeling let down by uncharted 3, when most of the fans of the series even said that Uncharted 2 was clearly the best of the 3.

I played every one of them and I agree that Uncharted 3 felt so much like 2 and the only thing that changed was the location, the story progressed and the MP. That is not to say that the game was bad, it just wasn't what most of the fans of the series expected (IMO).

I really agreed with them all and that is not to say they were all bad, they just didn't reach the high exceptions a lot of the fans had.

Assassin's Creed; Coming from the company that made Prince of Persia.

Rage; Coming from a highly credited Dev that made the Doom and quake games and a Highly credit Publisher/Dev (Not so much to the Ps3 community after Skyrim?) that made the Elder Scrolls and Fallout series.

Uncharted 3; Coming from the company that made Crash and Jak & Daxter, but not only that, it was there third outing in the series, so it hand a lot to live up to. Because every one of their third games were better than the second (Minus Jak 3 based off Metacritic).

BakedGoods4219d ago

While RAGE and Uncharted may be considered a let down by some, CliffyB's reasoning was absurd. He just complained they where not the games HE wanted to play. Three-wave CTF in RAGE? Non-linear Uncharted?

Well in that case I'm disappointed Gears 3 wasn't an MMORPG--'cause frankly that's what I wanted.

The guy's a great developer, but views the game industry exclusively through his own lens--forgetting that some people WANTED a single-player iD experience, or a cinematic Indiana-Jones styled adventure--he unfortunately failed to criticize them on those terms.

aquamala4220d ago

A game doesn't need to be horrible to be disappointing.

Knushwood Butt4219d ago

@ LastDance

You mean, the way nearly every ledge / thing you grab onto in UC3 falls away in a shock, surprise moment (/s). Yeah, that was lame. It got seriously tedious. As did the number of times Drake says, 'Oh crap.'.

It's like ND were trying to be clever and parody themselves, but it simply wasn't funny or clever.

4220d ago Replies(1)
Knight_Crawler4220d ago

Can not blame the man for saying that...UC 3 was good but no where near the awesomeness that was UC2.

I think ND put there self in a corner by making UC2 so EPIC.

Zechs344219d ago

Gears 2 was trash, Gears 1 and 3 are great games.

Syntax-Error4219d ago (Edited 4219d ago )

Gears 1 was good, Gears 2 was a WTF did I just play, and Gears 3 was breath of fresh air. Even leaving the end open for a possibility was great. Looking forward to the new one next year. They wrapped up everyone's back story except for Baird. The next will show his. One thing about EPIC, they listen to feedback. Gears was the 2nd game in my life that made me sad to see a character die. First goes to Walking Dead Ep.3. I don't get that attached to characters and when I do...then that means the developers have done their job.

I am sure Naughty Dog has heard so many negative things about their 3rd installment that the next adventure will be over the top. They tried to give you air and sea battles, but it was epic enough I guess. You fought on ship, plane, car, and boat...what's next? The Last Of Us will make up for Uncharted 3, so IN NAUGHTY I TRUST.

2pacalypsenow4219d ago

their online was crappy lagfest the 3rd was better online but the campaign stank

NO, that award goes to Final Fantasy 13

Allsystemgamer4220d ago

What's wrong with gears of war?

Maybe if you actually read the article you would look the fool

Kingdom Come4219d ago

And people say this site isn't biased. Seriously, this is beyond pathetic. Cliff merely answered a question honestly, he mentioned two games that he is not alone in having found disappointing, Rage lacked that id Software multiplayer touch, Uncharted 3 felt like a rehash of its predecessor. Don't criticise his games just because you disagree with his opinion, just maturely mention why you disagree.

And as for mocking Gears of War, the franchise revolutionised the Third-Person Shooter genre.

Kill switch say high from last gen

Eyeco4219d ago (Edited 4219d ago )

The thing is Uncharted 3 wouldn't be considered a disappointment if Uncharted 2 wasn't so damn good, really after playing Uncharted 3, Gears 3 , and other action games released in the last year i can really appreciate Uncharted 2 so much more than when i played it on release.

That said i have quite a few gripes with Uncharted 3, for example the pacing is way off, nothing really connects fluidly , it just seems that one minute im in London, then im in France then im Syria then im on a boat, it feels like im jumping from locale to locale with almost no connection something that allot of action games tend to suffer from. Trust me play Uncharted 2 then play Uncharted 3 you'll notice just how inconsistent the level design is Uncharted 3 feels allot more disjointed,

Also someone else said this, the 1st half of the game just isn't that interesting its only when you reach the pirate camp where things really start to pick up, there seemed to be an overemphasis on shooting, the game feels like im just going from one set piece to another, there was no balance at all, remember the ice cave in Uncharted 2 ?

My next point is also referring back to the level design, the game is way too linear, remember in Uncharted 2 how the level design would allow you so many options to approach your enemy ? yeah that seems to have gone in U3 your literally limited to one position in parts of U3, that and it seems to go back to what made Drakes Fortune so damn annoying, in the sense that you would be stuck in one position fighting wave after wave of enemies, it was frustrating as hell.

I could go on , if anyone wants to know more of my gripes with U3 just pm me i've got a book load, overall the game seems to suffer from lack of polish, im gonna get allot of hate for this but Gears of War 3 is actually a more refined game than Uncharted3 , is it better ? no , but its way more polished. Naughty Dog should have spent 6-12 months refining the game. I mean they didn't even include cheats the one thing that made Uncharted games so replayable and they didn't include it i i have absolutely zero motivation to replay that game . Uncharted 3 is still an amazing game when you compare it to 90% of all the games out there right now its just not the sequel i expected.

Syntax-Error4219d ago

Let's be honest here, if Gears was going to be released for PS3 I am 100% positive it would fly off the damn shelf, SO STOP WITH THE DUMB HATE COMMENTS! You make yourself look like a damn fool when you make them. The game has outsold all PS3 exclusives, so your comments make you look like a fanboy. I love my PS3 and agree that they have more quality exclusives, but let's look at the facts before spewing ignorant comments.

The fact of the matter is Cliffy B(whether hate him or not) is absolutely right. I also appreciate what he has to say because he doesn't feel he has to be politically correct when answering a question. Only a few guys out there are like that. I for one can't wait to see what the new PS4 will look like or perform like, but I get goosebumps thinking about it. After seeing EPIC's demo for next gen, it looks like we might be nearing an official 10 yr console.

Eyeco4219d ago

what has gears 3 outselling ps3 exclusives (not entirely true) got to do with anything, since when do sales= quality COD has outsold everything on the 360 including the beloved Halo, that doesn't exactly exclude it from criticism.

I dont understand everyone's obession with saying Uncharted 3 was a disapointment or one of the most disapointing games this generation. I think Uncharted 2 was one of the best games this generation and that Uncharted 3 was also amazing and one of the best games of 2011 and of this generation. I think Uncharted 3 is very close to Uncharted 2 in terms of quality. I think Uncharted 2 is just a LTTLE BIT better than Uncharted 3. They are both amazing games.

Run_bare4220d ago

I Love all of them, Uncharted 2 was the best and Uncharted 3 giving me sense of continuation and more closeness to the character.

Knight_Crawler4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

" I think Uncharted 3 is very close to Uncharted 2 in terms of quality. I think Uncharted 2 is just a LTTLE BIT better than Uncharted 3"

You answered your own question...people expect the next game for a great game to be even greater. Uncharted 3 felt like someone gave me a Ferrari Enzo for my bday and the following year they gave me a Camaro :(

Edit: UC3 was great but you have to admit that playing it felt like a downer after playing UC2...not saying its ND fault for making UC2 so great but after reading that the team was split into 2 during UC3 development so one team can work on TLOU, I have to wonder if ND could have done better with UC3 if they had the entire team working on it and it was there main focus.

4220d ago
MysticStrummer4219d ago (Edited 4219d ago )

"UC3 was great but you have to admit that playing it felt like a downer after playing UC2"

No. I personally wasn't let down by UC3 at all. Brink, Dead Island, and Rage are my three most disappointing games this gen. I'm not sure how many games I'd have to list before I got to UC3 but it would be a lot.

JadedXGamer4220d ago

I felt Uncharted 3 was absolutely terrible. Pathetic excuse for a sequel, especially after Uncharted 2 which was so good.

Knight_Crawler4220d ago

I would not go as far as to say that it was terrible just did not live up to the UC2 expectations.

To be fair the entire Naughty Dog was not working on UC3 as the team was split into 2 and some of the UC developers were/are working on TLOU.

UN2 is hands down my favorite game this gen and hope that TLOU surpasses UC2.

BrianC62344220d ago

You sure didn't play the same game I played. Uncharted 3 was far from terrible. It's hard to repeat a game like Uncharted 2 but that doesn't make Uncharted 3 absolutely terrible.

hulk_bash19874220d ago

Your name says it all buddy. You have to be an extremely Jaded gamer to think that Uncharted 3 was "a pathetic excuse for a sequel". Though I did find that Uncharted 2 was the best in the series and one of the best games this Gen, Uncharted 3 wasn't far behind it.

yeahokchief4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

Uncharted 3 was amazing. Fantastic mutliplayer. Controls felt so damn smooth and i like all the coop modes.

You're doing yourself a disservice if you consider yourself a gamer and haven't experience "the plane sequence." It was one of the most impressive gaming experiences i've had to date. It was so awesome that it has it's own level in Battle Royale.

JellyJelly4219d ago

"Fantastic mutliplayer."

Not really.

Analyzing 'Uncharted: Drake’s Deception' – Wait, What is The Game About?

UNCHARTED2FANATIC898d ago (Edited 898d ago )

I cant even say what the point was its easily the worst story in the series. The online was a whole lot of fun though but overall doesn't come even close to 2

porkChop898d ago (Edited 898d ago )

It was a step back for sure. Personally, I thought even the MP was way better in U2. Solid game, glad I played it. I just think they didn't push as hard as they did with U2.

UNCHARTED2FANATIC893d ago

Yes both the online and story was better in 2 no doubt

Flewid638898d ago

The "young Drake" portion was pretty top notch, story-wise. But yeah, everything outside of that I felt was inferior.

DanielEndurance898d ago

Villains were all over the place in this… one second they wanted Drake dead, the next they needed him, then they want him dead again, then they coulda killed him, but poisoned his friend instead, then coulda shot him again, but had brunch with him, then needed him alive, then coulda mowed him down, but decided to kill him by fire and let him escape… Uncharted 2 was way better. 😅😅

slowgamer898d ago

=D Sounds crazy. I don't remember any of that. Played it on ps3 and I remember thinking that why was this game so bashed compared to second one. I liked it.

Chocoburger897d ago (Edited 897d ago )

Another thing that annoyed me about UC3 events was the agent Talbot teleporting around Turkey. It just felt off to me, and made no sense.

Also, for about one third of the game, you go on a wild goose chase to rescue Sully, who wasn't even there to be rescued, and you end up back where you started again. There was simply no pay off for all the events you go through, so it fell flat in that regard as if they couldn't figure out how to make the game longer, so they decided to side-track you to do something with no pay off, hoping you wouldn't notice due to all the incredible action set pieces they made.

Overall though, even with its flaws, I still enjoy the game.

TheEnigma313898d ago

This was actually my least favorite in the series. Didn't have that same impact that part 2 set.

Flewid638898d ago

Uncharted 2 is the pinnacle of the series (to me).

Granted, 4 had the best story in my opinion, but 2 was the overall best game.

When arguably the weakest game in the series is still awesome and more fun than most games today, you know you're onto a winner!

coolbeans899d ago

I'd extend "arguably" before awesome too. Many technically demanding scenes were jaw-dropping for the time, but it's tough to ignore the sub-par context propelling the action forward.

SullysCigar899d ago

Tough for you, perhaps, and that's fine. I enjoyed it very much. Perhaps a little less than the others in the series, but then the bar is extremely high.

I remember being blown away by the water and sand tech in U3 for the time too. It certainly was a visual treat!

LucasRuinedChildhood899d ago (Edited 899d ago )

It is very good, but when I originally played Uncharted 3 it was the most disappointed I'd ever been in a video-game because Uncharted 2 was just that good. I enjoyed 3 much more when I replayed it in the Nathan Drake Collection though. I could just enjoy it for what it is and accept that it's not Uncharted 2 - it's not a roller coaster, and it doesn't balance and rotate between action, puzzles, platforming and set-pieces in the same way.

Uncharted 3's gameplay is a bit more compartmentalized and focused on one thing at a time. I'm not surprised the scrapped version of Uncharted 4 was going to have no gunplay for the first half. It's also paced much differently - it takes a long time to get to the notable set-pieces. Uncharted 2 is insane from Nepal onwards which is about an hour into the game. haha.

I did like the introduction of chase sequences, and I love first hour (bar fight, young Drake) and from the airplane sequence onwards but I just think the rest of it just sort of meanders along without as much purpose as 2.

When it comes to the script, you can feel the absence of Neil Druckmann and Josh Scherr (writer on every other console Uncharted game). Drake gets hit in the face, and the game goes on a random side plot for an hour to give you some boat set-pieces. He then washes up on a beach close to where Elena is staying to get you back to the real plot. Drake just says "How convenient" to try make you laugh off how sloppy the plot got.

In retrospect, I'm not sure if Naughty Dog were ready to work on 2 different games at once. 3 clearly had production issues that 1 and 2 didn't have, and Hennig's version of 4 didn't work out. They had to crunch so hard to get the rebooted version done on time that Bruce Straley gave up making video-games.

coolbeans898d ago

I'll give you some props for the extra analysis. I remember Druckmann climbing his way to a writer spot in UC2, but wasn't aware of Josh Scherr. I didn't know that was the reason for Straley's departure either. That's pretty damn rough.

GhostofHorizon899d ago

They had to make some weird choices as far as story went because the actor for Cutter had to bail which left a few holes in the story.

Uncharted is one of my favourite series and while the leap from 2 to 3 was not nearly as big as the leap from 1 to 2, I think it was an amazing experience none the less.

coolbeans899d ago

Graham McTavish's departure wasn't easy, but I don't think that would fix many holes tbh. Because the main issue to consider is the precarious mindset Naughty Dog was operating on: an increased emphasis in set pieces that HAD to go in and worrying about the context later.

Petebloodyonion899d ago

I really liked part 3 ( Among Thieves is still the best in my opinion) My only complaint was the interactions with the villains and how they were a missed opportunity, Linda MacMahon (Marlowe) was an interesting antagonist due to the history with Sully and Nate but it fails basically flat especially with her ending. And I couldn't care about Navaro 2.0.

What I did love and made me care was Cutter, in the short time he was in the game you could feel that the guy was a good treasure hunter for example when he pulled his own notebook with the clues he founds so the team can escape a room.
It was a small touch that add a lot to the character.

Good-Smurf899d ago

Marlowe was played by Rosalind Ayres.

MadLad899d ago (Edited 899d ago )

I have mixed feelings on the series. I still own all of them on the PS3, and the collection for PS4, but I didn't truly "love" any of the games until 4.

They're good games, but they always stumble on some element.
The first is good, but the climbing mechanics weren't exactly fine tuned with the first showing. Not to mention the spongey enemies if you played on anything past normal; but you're then faced with a fairly unchallenging game experience.
The second mostly fixed the climbing, but added in a pretty clumsy stealth mechanic.
Three was just two with a new story.

Four got it right though.
I don't remember once getting annoyed by any mechanic had in the game.

I know that everyone has a soft spot for 2, and 3 is sort of the black sheep of the series; but they did, overall, get progressively better. Which doesn't always happen.

UC 2, 4, 3 and 1. Great read and article

ABizzel1997d ago

No Golden Abyss -_-, otherwise I agree with the order.

UC2: Best overall
UC4: Best graphics, best gameplay, best locations, best environements
UC3: Best set pieces IMO (the boat and desert fights will always be amazing)
UC1: A rough Draft of what was to come
UCGA: Basically UC1 on Vita

Levii_92997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

Great list and great article nicely writen and explained. Although for me personaly i would put Drakes Fortune above Drake’s Deception and Uncharted 4 is absolutely my favourite of the franchise and number 1 for me.

Inverno997d ago

U2 is the only game playable on crushing without causing a great amount of frustration. Not to mention just how much influence it had that they redid some of U2s set pieces like the caravan twice, and armored truck chase in U4.

DFresh997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

I'd rate it as the following.

1.) Uncharted 2
(Close to perfection of any game I've played in years. Single Player/Multiplayer/Co Op all amazing.)

2.) Uncharted 3
(On par with UC2 multiplayer/co op wise minus the kickbacks [aka killstreaks]. I really liked the Lawrence of Arabia story.)

3.) Uncharted 4
(Single player is amazing. Multiplayer was meh. Co Op had potential. Absolutely hated the health revive system it slowed down the game way too much. Always preferred the fast pace action of UC2/UC3. Made it way more fun that way. Recoil was too ridiculous that most people in lobbies would only do hip firing, using power weapons and using that OP grappling hook to melee people after dropping them. Nobody wanted to revive anyone.)

4.) Uncharted
(It's the first in the series so it's hard to judge. Though I loved the story.)

NecrumOddBoy997d ago

I agree here but it’s also a series you can play from front to back and truly enjoy. Story-wise, they are all great and flow so well. I wish they threw both Golden Abyss and Lost Legacy on this list. Lost Legacy is the best mechanically in my opinion. You can see it’s stepping stone framework for TLOUS2.

Michiel1989997d ago

uncharted 2 is one of the few games that actually surpassed its pre-release hype.

medman997d ago (Edited 997d ago )

I am a single player gamer...I barely ever touch a multiplayer component. The only exceptions over the years have been the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, TLOU factions, and the Uncharted 2 multiplayer. The Uncharted 2 multiplayer saw me spend more time playing it than all my other multiplayer experiences over the years combined. That game really was a masterpiece all around.

brando008996d ago

I agree completely, those are all stellar MP experiences, coming from another SP gamer who only occasionally gives MP some time.

Gardenia997d ago

Come to think of it, the step between Uncharted 1 and Uncharted 2 is huge. It goes from the weakest in the series to one of the best games ever made.
I think I'm going to play all of them again soon.

Ninver997d ago

Yeah all of a sudden I've got that Uncharted itch.
