Sony Says: The New PS3 Slim and What it Means

GotGame: With the drop of the new model of PS3, lighter, smaller, but with all the features of the big bad model some people are curious as to why there is a new model when it seems that the next console cycle is starting with the drop of the Wii U this year.

then good for you @mdkgod43 but not everybody's like that. I still play PS1 and PS2 games and I rather have 1 console do all that than having 3 systems connected to my TV. (In this case 2 since thank god the PS3 still offers PS1 BC!)

It's become clear that if you want to play your old games, you should play them on their respective consoles. Kinda like trying to play VHS movies on DVD or Blu-ray players. It's a privilege. They're not entirely obligated to play old games on new systems.

Just like people should keep their PSPs to play UMDs and not b**ch about the lack of UMD drive on Vita and wanting free digital copies.

Its funny how some people cant get there head around the fact that this "10 year life cycle" for the ps3 doesnt mean no ps4 until at least 10 years into the ps3's life...

Its plain and simple that when MS announce and launch there next console, sony simply cannot afford to sit back and do nothing, the ps4 would be dead on arrival ..

I don't think it's that simple. If Sony can make money from their PS2/PS3/PSP/PSVita then Sony won't be too bothered about MS releasing another console ahead of them. In fact, if Sony wait long enough, the PS4 would be seen as a next gen console and the 720 would be seen as a last gen console. Chipsets would be a lot cheaper and therefore the PS4 could theoretically be leaps and bounds ahead of the 720.

Grib, I believe Sony already said they will not be late in the console race this upcoming gen. that clearly meant they will not let MS get a year lead. (since we all know MS and Sony does not think Ninty is in the same league for God knows what reason)

Remember in business "perception" is a big deal, being in last place no matter how small the lead is and a year ahead the competitor launched is still not good for "publicity".

Sony would like to avoid that at all cost. The Vita is already suffering from it.

10 years life cycle doesn't mean that PS4 will be out in 2016, PS4 will be out next year and SONY will simply keep supporting PS3 until 2016

You seem to be basing what you said on history. If we were to go by history, Sony released a new console 2 years after they launched the latest slim revision of their product. But that's only if we go by history, which means an announcement from Sony concerning the PS4 would be 2013 at the earliest(obviously) and a launch in 2014.

Sony, could start developing games for PS3 through GaiKai, while other Next Gen consoles are releasing, aswell as having access to PC games. I wonder if that's the direction they are going... I don't know how much people would buy into such a system, but launching it this year would of been a good pre-emptive strike.

Its not 1999 anymore, Sony doesn't dictate what happens in the industry. Next gen actually starts November 18th here in the United States when the Wii U launches. Next gen wont get into full swing until Microsoft and Sony release their consoles though.

I don't play the waiting game though, I've been burned by that before. I'd rather get enjoyment from next gen games and systems as soon as possible.

Ummm you're referring to Nintendo exclusives only, right? The Wii U is a continuation of current gen.
Current gen type games with higher res, AA and fps. Not the same next-gen games we'll be seeing on PS4/X720.

Let's stop kidding ourselves here.
Next gen starts when Sony and Microsoft launch their new consoles. People can't wait and see what these systems will do. They're the most anticipated of all upcoming consoles.

Wii U feels almost like a Wii 2.0
Just how the Wii was more powerful and capable than the PS2, it got ports like Okami was outdone by PS3/360.
The same way the Wii U is more powerful but getting current gen ports like ME3 and Batman and will be outdone by the PS4/X720.

Next gen has absolutely nothing to do with the power of a console. The Wii U being in full HD will mean that no matter how powerful the Xbox 720/PS4 are, there wont be as noticeable differences as there were this gen.

We don't even know for sure when next gen systems from Sony or Microsoft will even release, most likely next year for Microsoft, but who knows for Sony?

Wii U is going to be popular and great, it kicks off next gen, no matter what insecure fanboys might think.

Time frame wise, yes the Wii U is part of the next generation of consoles.
But other than that, it will be as "next gen" as the first Wii was compared to the PS3/360 once the PS4 and X720 launch. I've already explained the similarities between Wii and Wii U and how both play current gen type games and enhanced ports from current gen systems.

You think graphical quality maxes out at 1080p and won't notice any difference??? Are you serious? LOL. There's a lot more you can do within 1080p with more power... but you know what, I'm not even going to bother.

Sony will most likely go out of (the console part at least) business by the time PS4 comes out and it flops harder than the ps3 did and Vita is destined too.

Did whoever wrote this article actually read the quotes he quoted?:

Again, another article that draws the wrong conclusion from Sony repeating exactly what they said for the PS1, the PS2 and the PSP. Can we now PLEASE just acknowledge that Sony ALWAYS have a 10 year lifecycle and stop drawing conclusion from 'nothing'.

Ironically the article could be right, but it's once again drawing on the wrong information to prove that point. What is said here is what Sony always say. The real quote that these journalists should be tracking down is the quote from a Sony employee that stated that he sees the PS3 as having a much longer lifecycle. Track that down and you have some validity with this claim.
