Soul Sacrifice: Inafune on Building the Ultimate PS Vita Action Game

Posted by Fred Dutton // SCEE Blog Manager -

Make no mistake, the Japanese know how to queue. In the bowels of the PlayStation stand at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, countless orderly lines of patient gamers snake neatly through a maze of white chain-link barriers, intersecting each other like the world’s most organised spaghetti junction. At the start of each queue stands an official with a whiteboard and a marker pen, methodically updating the estimated waiting time for each game. Of all the games on show at PlayStation’s booth, which boasted the longest line? PS Vita action title Soul Sacrifice, with show-goers having to wait well over an hour for a chance to try it out.

Soul Sacrifice WILL be the ultimate action game on the PSVita. Not only that, but it'll also be a heavy weight contender for future RPG's.

HarryMasonHerpderp4220d ago

One of my most anticipated games!

miyamoto4217d ago

You have a nice name that is very funny!

telekineticmantis4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

Vita games that make me excited about this system, but it's Jappanese so that probably means no Voice acting. Hardcore NA/EU games please...

-DanielBryan-4220d ago

It looks really boring compaired to Monster Hunter.

Garuda334220d ago

Mh is boring,no evolution in the gameplay and graphism since the ps2.

hitenbarney3534220d ago

not only is this game a blatant rip off of monster hunter. It looks sort of broken.

Inafune is the joke of the industry who everyone ignores

Garuda334220d ago

And mh is a blatant rip off of phantasy star online,so what?

hitenbarney3534220d ago

1 is an mmo, the other isnt. They are literally nothing alike,.

knifefight4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

On being "broken," no. I played it at TGS. It has an amazing story and interesting gameplay premise in which your character actually evolves differently based on how you play.

It played very well. Its combat functions similarly to Monster Hunter only on the surface.

Also Phantasy Star Online is not an MMO, it's an MO. There is no "Massively." It's a multiplayer online RPG, but it doesn't have that first "M" in the acronym.

It's cool that MH has a ton of fans, but I'm not one of them.

For me, SS looks way more appealing. Looking forward to this.

“Keiji Inafune, Creator, Soul Sacrifice: The idea is to have a game that Western audiences will find appealing, while also making sure that it will also sell well here in Japan. The Western audience must feel willing to play this game. PS Vita is not going to benefit if you just have a lot of otaku games on it – you need something like this. It needs dark and deep titles like Soul Sacrifice.”

No inafune. Japan is more important. And insulting your nation is not only horrible but nobody is going to buy your game
It seems like a generic version of things weve played already

“So, if I was to be exposed to a game of the future 25 years ago I think I would’ve started earlier at trying to be aware of Western audiences. If that were true I think I would have been even more successful and have a lot more money!

oh so the idea is to sell out then? no megaman, no anything? no onimusha

“. PS Vita is not going to benefit if you just have a lot of otaku games on it –”

if you mean japanese games, thats exactly what vita needs
more of them, like disgea 3 vita, persona 4 golden, or ys IV

ShoryukenII4220d ago

If you are wonder about the disagrees, here what was wrong with what you just said:

There is nothing wrong with trying to make a game that appeals to the West while also trying to not betray its Japanese roots. The plan is to sell well in both regions, by pleasing fans of both regions. Looking at Soul Sacrifice, it doesn't seem "westernized" or "otaku." It seems like Demon's Souls which felt worldwide. Gravity Daze was also good in this respect. The Metal Gear series is another one that comes to mind. And even if the gameplay ends up sucking for some reason (doubtful), this game is certainly far from generic. You remind me of those "lolwowclone" clones.

He isn't selling out, he is making a something very different here. Once his studio builds up a good reputation, then he'll be able to make games that are similar to his old ones. I don't know if Onimusha belongs to Crapcom or not, pretty sure Megaman does. He doesn't work for them anymore and wants to leave them behind and forge a new future for himself and for games in general. Maybe you should give him a chance.

PS Vita Exclusives Freedom Wars, Soul Sacrifice to Have Servers Shuttered

Sammy: "Two high-profile PS Vita exclusives, Freedom Wars and Soul Sacrifice, will have their servers deactivated on 24th December, 2021. Both titles, published by Sony in response to its loss of Monster Hunter exclusivity, were built around co-operative play, and maintained relatively dedicated communities to this day."

Oreshika is also getting it servers shut down too. Big shame for these games. Honestly some of Vita's gems.

Snookies12873d ago

I'm surprised these were even still up! Loved the Vita though, had some great times with that handheld.

XxSPIDEYxX873d ago

These games deserve sequels or remakes. It was Soul Sacrifice that even got me into Monster Hunter.

Rangerman1208873d ago (Edited 873d ago )

Honestly surprised they never got ported to the ps4 or even PC. Since Sony won't give the vita another shot, wht not make a Vita collection? Could have Soul Sacrifice, Freedom Wars, KZ Mercs, Uncharted Golden Abyss, Murasaki Baby, etc. As a way to conmemorate the Vita.

CDbiggen873d ago

Freedom wars servers are still up? Holy shit.

jimbo6597872d ago

This why you never should have achievements/trophies locked to online only features.

Keiji Inafune's Latest Mobile Game Will Shut Down After Less than a Year of Life

The former Mega Man producer's latest game, Dragon & Colonies, is going to dragon heaven.

mrmikew20181581d ago

Another failure from this whiny clown, I wonder what his excuse will be now?

Chaos_Order1579d ago

Probably that "The mobile gaming landscape is cruel and ruthless and something needs to be done!" when not long ago he would've been thinking "the mobile game market is so massive, we'll make Megabucks!"

xX1NORM1Xx1580d ago

I kinda feel bad for him at this point but he did bring it on himself with mighty number 9.

PhoenixUp1579d ago

Seems everything he touches since he left Capcom becomes filled with misfortune.

- Started work on a 3DS game called Kaio: King of Pirates that later got canceled
- Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z was a disappointing game that all but killed the Ninja Gaiden franchise
- Mighty No.9 failed to live up to the grand expectations set for it
- ReCore was very below average title that didn’t leave much of an impression
- Red Ash has fallen off the radar and the public hasn’t heard anything about its progression

All these flops from the same man who dissed Japanese developers a decade ago. He even defended Phil Fish’s harsh criticism of Japanese devs yet Inafune himself has hasn’t had any critical hits of his own since leaving Capcom.

Chaos_Order1579d ago

The "creator" *coughs violently* of Mega Man sure can't catch a break, can he?

Chaos_Order1579d ago

Which is exactly why I put the word "creator" in quotes and added *coughs violently* after it, because he has been called the creator of Mega Man many times in the past despite it not being accurate. -_- Pardon my immense subtlety.

Wasabi1578d ago

@MrSwank

**"he didnt create mega man"***

I think that was his point.

Hint: "coughs violently"
