Criterion: “We don’t make sequels to other people’s games”

Need for Speed: Most Wanted might share a name with the 2005 original by EA Black Box, but current series developers Criterion are making the Need for Speed franchise very much their own.

If you don't want people to think you're making a sequel, a top tip is to not name your game the same as the original!!

mynameisEvil4227d ago

If the you name it the same as the original, then it's a remake, not a sequel.

If they wanted it to be thought of as a sequel, they would've put a '2' at the end of the name.

There. I think you've learned something today:
Same name = remake.

Jdoki4224d ago (Edited 4224d ago )

Perhaps you should read the article. It's not a remake, and doesn't even sound much like a reboot.

"but even though Most Wanted has the same name as the 2005 entry in the series, it is an entirely fresh approach"

If certain consumers were not thinking this was a sequel, we wouldn't need a article where Criterion have to clarify things.

From the sounds of it this game could just easily be label as a Burnout title instead of NFS. Seems their using the Most Wanted sub-title to appeal to those with fond memories of the last decent NFS game before Criterion started turning NFS in to Burnout.

computeSci4227d ago (Edited 4227d ago )

But it's "their" take on NFS: Most Wanted. That's why it's the same name. People would think it would be a sequel if it were called NFS: Most Wanted 2. SSX and Fifa Street used the same name because is was a fresh take, or reboot if you will. No need for numbers.

Edit:

@ mynameisEvil exactly.

Criterion: “We don’t make sequels to other people’s games”

haaaaa. riiiight!! u dont. to busy making NEED FOR SPEED like burnout paradise instead like NEED FOR SPEED.

mynameisEvil4224d ago

You apparently don't get it, then. This IS a remake. A remake/reboot. A "remake" doesn't mean you're making the SAME EXACT GAME again, it means you're taking a title and making it again, whether it's the same game with a graphical enhancement or a new game altogether, it's a remake.

So, yes, it's a remake/reboot. A fresh new approach for a remake/reboot.

why not Burnout Paradise 2 then and stay faithful to what you have always done ?

Need for Speed 2012 is obviously another episode on Need for Speed.

B_Rian894226d ago

I'm pretty sure they were forced into making it a Need for Speed game by EA. If it were up to Criterion I believe we would have seen a new Burnout game a long time ago

TopDudeMan4227d ago

Haha, apparently they don't make sequels to their own games anymore, either! Everyone wants more burnout!

MoreRPG4226d ago (Edited 4226d ago )

But you should take into consideration what makes those games great.

Ddouble4226d ago

I would rather a Burnout Paradise 2 but that doesn't mean I won't get this Day 1 since it has licensed cars.

If Criterion wants to wait until next gen for Burnout Paradise 2 or something similar then that is fine by me.

Looking Back to Two of Need for Speed's Best Games - Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit

Paul writes - "EA know a good thing when they see it, and for multiple years November was Need for Speed month. In a break from the usual routine, I'm going to be looking back at two games here, released in 2005 and 2010 respectively. The earlier game is Need for Speed: Most Wanted, which has the distinction of being one of the very best in the franchise. The second game comes from 2010, and is Need for Speed Hot Pursuit; which I'll talk about just as the Remastered version of the game has hit the stores."

Hotpursuit 2 was good as well.

I completely adore this game! In fact its probably my favorite racing game. I recently dusted off my xbox 360 to play Most Wanted 2005. Still a great game, though I do not remember there being such horrible performance. Like massive frame-pacing issues. screen tearing, latency. If any game ever truly needed to be remastered, it this one for sure!
