Markus “Notch” Persson Would Rather Have ‘Minecraft’ Not Run On Windows 8 Than “Play Along”

"Nothing like some good ol’ drama to get the internets a goin’ this late at night! Recently Markus “Notch” Persson, mastermind behind the hit indie game Minecraft, took to Twitter to voice his concerns with Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system. Notch stated the he “Got an email from Microsoft wanting to help “certify” Minecraft for Windows 8. I told them to stop trying to ruin the PC as an open platform.” Ouch."

I don't blame him, the winbows 8 certification and app store are one big clusterf***. Just seems like one big cash grab from MS.

Anything rated over PEGI 16/ESRB Mature isn't allowed either, and even if it is, any add on content is not allowed to exceed PEGI 12/ESRB Everyone

Kudos to the guy for sticking to his guns, it's a shame that more people aren't being vocal about it however besides him and Gabe Newell (that I know of anyways).

The PC is a great gaming platform and it would be a tragedy if Microsoft completely ruined it. All of us running Windows 7 or below can obviously choose not to upgrade and that's fine, but since all new computers will start to come with Windows 8 pre-installed, it could cause some problems.

Hopefully Microsoft come to their senses.

Even if they don't come to their senses they're about to be hit with a huge-blankin' fine by European courts for their last financial quarter that could be as large as 7.4 Billion dollars, so they will have to lessen the reigns in some direction if they want to get jaded developers to make games on win8 because this little news might just make the stock drop just a little bit.

Hopefully, it will be in the direction that gives gamers and developers an edge.

I don't blame him, but i wonder how will this affect Minecraft on the Xbox? If MS decides to certify Minecraft without his consent will he then strike a deal with Nintendo or Sony?

GameOn4220d ago

but could they do that? surely they need his permission.

pixelsword4220d ago

It won't be the first time a corporation ripped something off and then try to"fix" it in the courts.

CFerrendelli4220d ago

I don't think anything will happen in that division. Two completely separate departments. *crosses fingers*

Qrphe4220d ago

I don't like Win8 at all either, but what does he mean by playing along?

It's not like Win8 PC users would download only from the app store and nothing else. They could do what they've been doing all along games directly online or Steam.

Da One4220d ago

But Steam will also need to be certified on the App store to even be downloaded on your Win 8 machine.

Why do you think Gabe is bitching(unless something has changed), MS could literally make it so you can't even have Steam on your Win 8 machine.

dark-hollow4220d ago (Edited 4220d ago )

"but Steam will also need to be certified on the App store to even be downloaded on your Win 8 machine. "

Thats simply isnt true. You download steam from their website just like you do with windows 7.

What gabe complaining about is the fear of the app market taking the lion share and any app/game outside of tge market wont get popular and people would have to let ms have 30% cut share for their apps to get published on the app market.

Baka-akaB4220d ago

I dunno where you guys get the idea that you need to use the app store and have to relinquish that much control .

Those guys just fear that the casual users , the one without much pc knowledge will just eat crumbs from the in house app store

FragMnTagM4220d ago

Thanks Qrphe, dark-hollow, and Baka-akaB for having some sense in your heads.

I have been saying this all along. It isn't as big of a deal as they are making out to be. They might lose some market share MAYBE, but I don't think it is going to be quite as bad as Notch and Gabe are making it out to be.

You can still download and install programs like you always have. It is just that the appstore is right on the boot screen.

Just download Steam and your games how you always have no problem.

if it feels that way about windows then why even make a game for the 360 isnt that the same type of set up?

Infinite but not the first two games? Witcher 3 but not the first two games?? GTA V but not literally any of the games before it??? Portal 2 but not the first? Also if you're going to play Shadow of The Colossus play the remaster and not the remake. Can't say I disagree with the list but my man it's all over the place.

Name Last Name36d ago

I mean some sequels are objectively better and you don’t need to play the whole series.

Inverno36d ago

But most of these games have a story to follow, sure you can catch up with a YouTube vid but where's the fun in that?

LucasRuinedChildhood35d ago (Edited 35d ago )

A list like this isn't telling you not to play the previous games if you want to. It's just giving you legendary games to play.

But tbh, you don't always have to force yourself to play every entry in a franchise to get to the better ones.

- The vast majority of Witcher 3 players never played the first 2 and had a great time. The first 2 games aren't in the same league.
- The GTA games are self-contained with the odd fun reference. You can easily jump into any of them.
- The Shadow Of The Colossus remake looks and controls better than the original (plus it has a 60fps option while the remaster is just 30fps). New players will enjoy it more.
- Portal 2 is a lot better than Portal 1 and takes the concept much further gameplay-wise. Storywise, Portal 1 is fairly light too. Not that you shouldn't play it but realistically ... you'd love Portal 2 whether you play it or not (at lot of Portal 2 players have never played 1).

Bioshock 1 is the only one I agree with you on simply because it's one the best games of all time and arguably better than Infinite. No other setting like Rapture.

Looking at the list, I'd recommend playing Uncharted 1 before 2 but no doubt, 2 is the legendary one you have to play.

Inverno35d ago

I get it, but that's just my opinion on his opinion. I just think that before you play a sequel you should still play what came before it. Maybe it's just me but i find it fascinating playing through the first game in a series and seeing how it has evolved through its sequels. Like I said I don't disagree with the list, other than SoTC which I strongly believe the remaster of the original should be played above the remake.

AuraAbjure35d ago

Awesome list! Hot take on Fear (and it's hard af expansion Persaus Mandate!) Bioshock Infinite is stellar, so is the Witcher 3 and you nailed it by having Ocarina of Time. So many fantastic games! Gotta play 'em all! Next one on my list is Prey after I beat Dead Space 2 and Splinter Cell Conviction.

Minecraft Bedrock Introduces Official Add-Ons To Marketplace

Minecraft Bedrock is introducing add-ons to the marketplace. The add-ons can now be added to many existing and new worlds.

Jin_Sakai56d ago (Edited 56d ago )

Nice! Next up, shaders on consoles.

“A new update is improving how mods work for Minecraft Bedrock. Mojang has introduced add-ons to the marketplace.”

“These add-ons can now easily be added to new and existing worlds instead of being tied to a single world.
There are plenty of free and paid add-ons that will let you customize just about anything in your world.”

OtterX55d ago

So RayTracing is no longer locked to the NVIDIA maps? I know there was a workaround, but it will be nice to have easier access to all worlds.
